Specs

The compact SUV market has always been the first choice for family users and young buyers in Malaysia, and the Toyota Corolla Cross has long held a prominent position with its balanced performance. The launch of the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport not only retains the economic advantages of the hybrid model but also enhances its sporty characteristics through the GR Sport package, while further approaching a high-end configuration. This article will conduct a detailed review of the new car from dimensions such as static design, space practicality, and dynamic driving experience to see if it can maintain its leading position in the highly competitive segment.

In terms of exterior design, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport is more aggressive compared to the standard version. The front fascia features a larger trapezoidal honeycomb grille, with a glossy black finish on the grille frame and bottom lip, paired with the exclusive GR Sport badge for maximum sportiness. The sharp design of the LED headlights on both sides, integrated with L-shaped daytime running lights, offers high recognition, and automatic headlights along with front fog lights are standard. The side profile has smooth lines, and the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear enhances the three-dimensionality. The 18-inch glossy black multi-spoke wheels paired with 225/50 R18 tires further elevate the sporty vibe. At the rear, the LED taillight groups feature a smoked finish, echoing the front design. The lower diffuser styling and hidden exhaust layout balance sportiness with simplicity.

Stepping into the interior, the overall interior style leans towards practicality, but the GR Sport version adds a sporty vibe with meticulous adjustments. The dashboard is covered with soft materials, accented by silver trim, offering a texture that ranks above average in its class. The 10.1-inch touchscreen positioned at the top of the dashboard operates smoothly. While there are not many flashy features, essential functionalities like Bluetooth connection, CarPlay, and Android Auto are all supported. The multifunction steering wheel is made of leather and supports electric adjustment, with the left buttons controlling the driver assistance systems and the right buttons handling multimedia, all reasonably laid out. The seats feature exclusive GR Sport fabric and leather combination material. The front seats provide good support, with the driver's seat offering 8-way electric adjustment, while the passenger seat is manually adjustable. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 ratio, providing strong practicality.

In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions are 4450mm × 1825mm × 1620mm, with a wheelbase of 2640mm, which is at the mainstream level for a compact SUV. The front-row seating space is spacious, and a 175cm tall passenger still has a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting their sitting posture. The rear-seat space also performs well, with approximately two fist-widths of legroom and one fist-width of headroom. Even with three adult passengers, it doesn’t feel overly crowded. For storage spaces, the front door pockets can hold two water bottles, the central armrest box has moderate depth, and the trunk offers a standard capacity of 440L, which can be expanded to 1197L by folding down the rear seats, suitable for daily family use. Additionally, the rear-row air conditioning vents, USB charging ports, and ISOFIX child seat anchors are all standard, with details thoughtfully considered.

In terms of the power system, it is equipped with a hybrid system consisting of a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine and a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The engine has a maximum power of 98PS and a maximum torque of 142N·m, while the motor has a maximum power of 72PS and a maximum torque of 163N·m. It is paired with an E-CVT transmission. During daily driving, the vehicle is mainly driven by the motor, which provides a light start and quick acceleration response. The 0-60km/h acceleration performance is good, making it suitable for urban road conditions. When the accelerator is pressed deeply, the engine engages, delivering smooth power output without significant jerks, and there is sufficient power reserve for highway overtaking. There are three driving modes to choose from: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and power output is more direct.

In terms of handling, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension is relatively common in its class. The suspension is tuned for comfort and can filter out most road bumps, providing a composed performance when passing over speed bumps. The steering wheel offers good accuracy with minimal play; it feels light at low speeds and stable at high speeds. The handling is above average among compact SUVs. The vehicle stability control system and traction control system provide sufficient support during fast cornering. The vehicle maintains a stable posture with no noticeable body roll.

Fuel economy is a highlight of this hybrid model. In real-world urban conditions, the fuel consumption is approximately 4.2L/100km, while on highways it is about 5.1L/100km. The combined fuel consumption is around 4.5L/100km, which is significantly better compared to other fuel-powered vehicles in the same class. The braking system performs well, with a combination of ventilated front discs and rear disc brakes, offering short braking distances and linear braking force, inspiring confidence. As for driving assistance systems, features like ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring are standard equipment. The user experience is good, effectively reducing the fatigue of long-distance driving.

In terms of noise insulation, the vehicle performs well at low speeds, with minimal noise generated by the motor. At higher speeds, wind noise and tire noise become more noticeable but remain within acceptable limits. Seat comfort is good, and long-term sitting does not cause fatigue. The backseat has a moderate angle, with a low center floor hump, offering a better experience for the middle passenger.

Overall, the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport not only retains the practicality and economic benefits of the standard version but also enhances the product's appeal through sporty design adjustments to the exterior and interior. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-30, this car's advantages include lower fuel consumption, richer driving assistance features, and good space performance. It is suitable for families who focus on fuel economy, space practicality, and driving safety, especially those driving in urban conditions. If you are looking for a well-rounded compact SUV, this car is worth considering.

Pros
GR Sport styling kit is eye-catching, blackened wheels + red trim enhance recognition and sporty feel
1.8 hybrid system suits Malaysian road conditions, fuel-efficient and quiet in urban areas, smooth power transition on highways
Comprehensive safety features, L2 assisted driving + 7 airbags, more peace of mind on slippery highways and long-distance driving
Cons
The rear design leans more towards family use and lacks sharpness; the car paint is relatively thin and prone to scratches.
The interior has many plastic parts with average texture; some panels easily pick up fingerprints and become soft after sun exposure.
Lacks 360-degree panoramic view; the clarity of the reversing camera is insufficient, making nighttime parking inconvenient.

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport
As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross GR Sport, I’ve been driving it for almost a month, and the overall experience matches my expectations! Starting with the exterior, the GR Sport’s sporty kit is truly eye-catching — the blacked-out 18-inch wheels paired with red accents on the body make it highly recognizable in the traffic of Kuala Lumpur. My friends all say it looks more "aggressive" compared to the regular version. However, the rear design could have been sharper; it still leans towards being family-oriented, so I’ll deduct one point here. As for the interior, the red-black stitched seats and the Alcantara steering wheel feel fantastic. The 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat is very comfortable for long highway drives (such as trips to Genting Highlands). The 10.1-inch infotainment screen is responsive, but there’s a bit too much plastic used, especially the piece in front of the passenger seat. It feels somewhat cheap to the touch, so a 4-star rating seems fair. What I’m most satisfied with is the safety features. Rainy weather is frequent in Malaysia, and the lane departure warning and forward collision alert have been incredibly helpful on slippery highways like the LDP. Once, the car in front braked suddenly, and I didn’t have time to react, but the system stepped in and slowed me down. The 7 airbags and ACC adaptive cruise control make long trips less tiring for my feet. My only regret is the lack of a 360-degree panoramic camera. When parking in tight spots near the Petronas Twin Towers, I have to be extra careful. Otherwise, I would’ve given it a full 5 stars instead of 4!

As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross GR Sport, after driving it for almost two months, I like it more and more! Let me start with the exterior — the GR Sport's sporty kit is just perfect for me! The blacked-out honeycomb front grille, 18-inch glossy black wheels, and the small rear spoiler at the back have gained me so many head-turns in the KLCC parking lot that even the security guard asked if it was modified. Performance-wise, the 1.8 hybrid is simply perfect for Malaysia's road conditions. On my daily commute along the LDP highway, the ACC adaptive cruise control is super stable; when I encounter traffic jams in areas such as Subang Jaya, the electric motor operates very quietly and smoothly, with fuel consumption as low as 3.8L/100km, much more efficient than my previous petrol car! Last week, I drove to Genting Highlands, and the power transition in the hybrid system was so seamless during the climb, I never felt the lack of power typical of small-engine vehicles. The safety features make me feel even more at ease — 7 airbags, lane-keeping assist, and the pre-collision system all come standard. One time on the Penang Bridge, the car ahead of me suddenly braked hard, and the system instantly alerted me and applied the brakes automatically, narrowly avoiding a collision! Now, when I take my family for road trips to the East Coast, even my wife says she feels particularly safe sitting in my car. In summary, this car is absolutely perfect for use in Malaysia, scoring full marks in appearance, performance, and safety!

As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross GR Sport HEV, after driving it for almost two months, here are my real feelings! First of all, I give full marks for performance. Malaysia's traffic-jammed city roads and occasional highway runs are perfect for hybrids – it's mostly electric when crawling in the city, which is quiet and fuel-efficient, with the fuel gauge dropping super slowly. Last week, I drove to Genting Highlands, and the transition between the electric motor and the engine when climbing uphill was very smooth with no sluggishness at all. The chassis felt more stable than the standard version when cornering, and the GR Sport tuning is definitely worth the extra cost. For safety, I'll give it 4 stars, primarily because the features are comprehensive, though there’s room for improvement in the details: 7 airbags, full-speed ACC, and lane-keeping assist are all available. Last time on the LDP highway, I got distracted and almost switched lanes improperly, but the lane departure warning vibrated the steering wheel in time and saved the day. However, the clarity of the reverse camera is average—at night in dark parking lots like those in Port Klang, you have to get really close to see clearly. If it could be upgraded to a 360-degree panoramic view, it would be perfect. Interior-wise, 4 stars seem fair as well. The GR Sport's sporty seats have good support, and the 8-way power adjustment is very friendly for someone like me with back issues. The rear air conditioning and USB ports are also practical. But the plastic panel next to the central control screen is a bit prone to fingerprints, and after parking under the scorching sun, it feels slightly soft to the touch. If it were replaced with piano lacquer or a metallic texture, it would be even better. Overall, at this price point, getting a fully-equipped, fuel-efficient, and easy-to-drive SUV in Malaysia is definitely worth it!

As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross GR Sport, after driving it for two months, I sincerely feel that this car is very handy to use in Malaysia! In terms of performance, the 1.8 hybrid is such a charm during KL's morning rush hour — for low-speed following, it mainly uses electricity, which is quiet and fuel-efficient. When overtaking on the highway, the petrol-electric combo provides sufficient power without feeling sluggish. However, the acceleration in the later part feels a bit weak, so I'd rate it 4 stars. The interior is much more refined compared to the standard version, with GR's sporty seats offering strong support and the leather feeling quite comfortable. The only downside is that the rear floor is a bit raised in the middle, which makes sitting three people on long trips a bit cramped. The safety features are really complete. The L2 assisted driving makes long trips on the North-South Expressway super stress-free, with stable adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The 7 airbags also provide peace of mind. The exterior goes without saying — the GR honeycomb grille and smoked wheels give it a high attention-grabbing rate when parked in front of Pavilion. However, the paint is a bit thin and can easily get scratched by small stones. Overall, at this price point, being able to buy such a well-rounded car is totally worth it!

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport
As the owner of the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport, after driving it for almost two months, the overall experience has been pretty good! Let’s talk about performance first. I’d give it 4 stars because it performs quite steadily under Malaysian road conditions. I usually take the LDP highway to commute, and the hybrid system offers a very smooth start. With the support of the electric motor, overtaking is effortless, especially in traffic. Following at low speeds is particularly smooth with absolutely no sense of jerking. However, once the speed exceeds 120km/h on the highway, further acceleration feels a bit sluggish. After all, it’s a 1.8L hybrid, so expectations can’t be too high. As for the exterior, I’d also give it 4 stars. The sporty GR Sport kit is indeed eye-catching. The black honeycomb grille, 18-inch blacked-out wheels, and the through-type LED taillights make it highly recognizable in parking lots. The red GR badge is just the right touch—not too ostentatious but very sporty. However, the paint seems a bit thin. A small scratch appeared the other day after being hit by a small pebble, which was a bit disappointing. All in all, this car is highly practical in Malaysia. The hybrid system is fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, and its appearance also fits the aesthetic of young people. Highly recommended!
