Specs

The C-segment SUV market has always been a battleground for family users and young consumers, requiring both practical space and brand quality, as well as balanced performance. As a new generation model, the 2023 BMW X1 sDrive20i xLine upgrades its engine to 2.0T, while also optimizing space and configuration. Compared to the old 18i version, it is 24,000 MYR more expensive, but offers significant upgrades in power and size. Is it worth choosing? This time, we will evaluate its actual performance through a static experience and dynamic test drive.

From the exterior, the 2023 X1 xLine is noticeably larger than the 2020 model, with a length of 4500mm and a wheelbase of 2692mm, which are 53mm and 22mm longer than the previous sDrive18i model, respectively. The body lines are more extended, with less of a compact feel. The front continues BMW's family-style dual kidney grille design, but the size is slightly larger. Featuring chrome trim and an xLine-exclusive front bumper, the recognition level is not low. The body side waistline runs from the front to the rear, and, combined with the 19-inch 245/45 R19 tires (larger than the previous 17-inch tires), the look appears more imposing. The rear LED taillights are horizontally designed, creating a clear lighting effect, and the silver skid plate on the rear bumper accentuates the SUV's off-road vibe. The overall design maintains BMW's refined touch while catering to market demand for spaciousness through size upgrades.

Sitting inside the car, the interior layout hasn’t changed much from the previous generation, but the detailed configurations have been improved. The 8.8-inch touchscreen on the center console is still the core feature, supporting the BMW iDrive system with smooth operation. The steering wheel retains multi-function buttons and paddle shifters, with a solid feel, though the adjustment is still manual, which is slightly disappointing. The seat configuration is worth mentioning: both the driver and front passenger seats support electric adjustment, and the driver’s seat includes a memory function. The leather seats offer moderate support and wrapping, making long trips less tiring. The space performance is a highlight of this new generation. With the extended wheelbase, there is significantly more legroom in the rear compared to the old model. Passengers 175cm tall have about two fists' worth of space between their knees and the front seats, and about one fist of headroom, making it suitable for family trips. The trunk capacity is 540L, an increase of 35L from the old model. It can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases and one carry-on suitcase, which is sufficient for daily use.

In the dynamic test drive section, the 2023 X1 sDrive20i xLine is equipped with a 2.0T four-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 150kW (204PS) and a maximum torque of 300N·m, paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Officially, the 0-100km/h acceleration is 7.6 seconds, consistent with the old sDrive20i M SPORT but significantly faster than the 18i's 9.6 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is quick during the start-up phase, with noticeable propulsion felt with a light press on the accelerator. Mid to later stage acceleration is also strong, and when overtaking, deeply pressing the accelerator results in quick downshifts from the gearbox, delivering smooth power output without noticeable jerks. There are three driving modes available: Comfort, Sport, and ECO. In Sport mode, throttle sensitivity is increased, and the steering becomes heavier, suitable for occasional spirited driving; Comfort mode leans towards smoothness, making it suitable for daily commutes.

In terms of chassis, the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned for comfort. It thoroughly absorbs minor bumps on urban roads, and the body doesn’t have extra bounces when passing speed bumps. Rear passengers also enjoy a stable experience. The steering feel is precise with minimal slack, and the body roll is well-controlled during cornering, maintaining BMW’s consistent handling quality. However, during high-speed cornering, the body roll is more pronounced than on compact models due to the increased size compared to the old model. Nevertheless, as a family SUV, this performance is good enough.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.2L/100km. During our actual test drive of around 100 kilometers on city roads, including congested sections and expressways, the displayed fuel consumption was 8.1L/100km, which is not far from the official figure. Considering the power of the 2.0T engine, this fuel efficiency can be considered reasonable. Noise control is well-handled. At 120km/h on the highway, both wind noise and tire noise remain within an acceptable range with no significant disturbances.

In terms of safety features, the 2023 X1 xLine comes standard with 6 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and other functions. Additionally, ACC adaptive cruise control has been added, making it more practical compared to the older 18i model. It can significantly reduce fatigue during long-distance driving. Automatic parking, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera are also standard, making it friendly for new drivers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW X1 sDrive20i xLine lie in the upgraded power, increased space, and enhanced configuration. Compared to the previous sDrive20i M SPORT, it is only 1,000 ringgit more expensive, but it offers a larger size and higher tire specifications. Compared to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 in the same class, it delivers stronger power and more spaciousness, making it stand out in terms of cost-effectiveness. It is suitable for family users who prioritize space, power, and brand quality. It can meet the needs of daily commuting and weekend family outings, and when you occasionally want to enjoy some driving pleasure, the power of the 2.0T engine can keep up. If your budget is around 240,000 ringgit and you’re looking for a well-rounded luxury family SUV, this X1 xLine is worth considering.

The Japanese SUV I owned before had weak power, so switching to this X1 M Sport was definitely the right choice! The 2.0T + DCT performs great during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, making lane changing much quicker than before. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the hill assist was rock solid. With 7.6 seconds for 0-100 km/h, the power was more than enough for uphill climbs. The M Sport package exterior looks sporty enough, and it attracts quite a few glances when parked near the Petronas Twin Towers. A minor downside is that the rear seats can't be adjusted, and my wife occasionally complains about discomfort on long trips. Also, the 51-liter fuel tank means more frequent refueling on the highway. However, the Harman Kardon speakers are a lifesaver when stuck in traffic, and the LED headlights are much brighter on rural roads at night compared to before. A 240,000 MYR BMW with keyless entry and automated parking offers decent value for its class, and the five-year unlimited mileage warranty provides peace of mind.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. The sudden downpour on the mountain road really tested the car. The 2.0T turbo of the X1 provided strong power when climbing hills, and the acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds remained stable even when overtaking on slippery curves. The Harman Kardon sound system drowned out the sound of rain, but the reflection on the 8.8-inch central control screen was a bit annoying. However, the lane departure warning and active braking were a great help on the congested downhill sections, and the 6 airbags and ISO FIX ensured that the child in the back seat slept soundly. The only thing was that the rear seats couldn’t be adjusted, so my wife complained after sitting for a long time during the trip.

Every morning during rush hour, it swiftly accelerates within 7.6 seconds, overtaking effortlessly and without hesitation. The Harman Kardon sound system is fantastic for listening to music during traffic jams. Even with three buddies in the back seat, it doesn't feel cramped. The only downside is the small fuel tank, which means frequent trips to the gas station.

Previously, the Japanese SUV I owned had such weak power that it felt like "slow motion playback". After switching to the 2020 X1 sDrive18i, the 1.5T+DCT is super agile in squeezing through traffic during Kuala Lumpur's morning peak hours, and it easily leaves the "snail cars" next to it behind when the light turns green. On weekends, taking the family to Genting, the turbo engagement during uphill drives is timely without any sense of struggle. The Harman Kardon sound system in the interior makes listening to local Malaysian songs extremely enjoyable. With the rear seats folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio, it fits the kid's scooter and camping gear perfectly. The only small downside is the fuel tank being just 51 liters, requiring frequent stops at gas stations when driving on the East Coast Highway. Although the safety features are complete, it lacks a 360-degree camera, so my novice wife often asks for my help when reversing. Overall, the price of RM220,000 is worth it—the BMW badge plus practical space gives a strong sense of pride when driving it in Malaysia!

Previously driving a Japanese SUV, the acceleration felt as sluggish as a "Kancil climbing a hill." Switching to the X1 sDrive20i feels like taking off! During the morning rush hour on the LDP highway, the explosive power of 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds makes weaving through traffic more thrilling than grabbing a seat at a kopi stall. Taking the family to Genting on the weekend, the 2.0T+DCT engine delivers power on demand, and uphill drives are effortless. Playing Malay songs on the Harman Kardon system with sufficient air conditioning in the rear seats, the wife and kids never complained about the heat along the way. Giving the safety features a score of 4 out of 5 feels justified—automatic emergency braking saved me once (nearly rear-ended another car when following too closely), but it lacks a 360-degree camera, so reversing in narrow alleys like Jalan Alor requires sticking your neck out to look. In this aspect, it’s not as good as my friend's CR-V. The xLine interior package feels premium and lives up to BMW standards, but the rear seats can't adjust their angle, leading to occasional complaints from the elders after a long ride. However, the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty makes car maintenance in Malaysia hassle-free, making it worth the RM240k+ price overall!
