Honda City 2018 Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment sedan market has been intense. Consumers not only value fuel economy for daily commuting but also place higher demands on safety features and comfort. The 2018 Honda City 1.5 V, as a mid-to-high trim version of the series, attracts target users with more comprehensive safety features and detailed upgrades. This test drive will focus on verifying whether its overall performance meets the core needs of family users.
From the exterior, the 2018 City 1.5 V maintains Honda's family design style. The chrome strip on the front connects the LED headlights on both sides, enhancing the visual width. The body’s side lines are smooth, with 16-inch wheels paired with 185/55R16 tires, appearing more refined compared to the 15-inch wheels of the entry-level version. The LED taillights at the rear adopt a horizontal layout, providing high recognition when lit at night. Overall, the design is simple and visually appealing, aligning with the positioning of a B-segment sedan.
Upon entering the cabin, the center console adopts a symmetrical layout. The materials are primarily hard plastic, but the details are well-crafted. For example, the silver trim around the air conditioning vents and button areas enhances the texture. The 6.8-inch touchscreen operates smoothly and supports basic multimedia functions. The multifunction steering wheel comes standard with paddle shifters, making it convenient to switch driving modes or adjust speed in daily driving. The front row is equipped with single-zone automatic air conditioning, while the rear has independent air conditioning vents and a 220V power socket, providing convenience for rear passengers. This is considered a practical feature among vehicles in the same class.
In terms of space, the City 1.5 V has a wheelbase of 2600mm. After adjusting the front seats manually, a 175cm tall tester has a fist of space remaining above the head. The rear legroom is more than two fists, and the headroom is one fist, making it adequate for daily family use. The trunk has a capacity of 536 liters, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold, allowing for carrying large items such as strollers or foldable bicycles when expanded.
For performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine has a maximum power output of 120PS, with peak torque delivered at 4600rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during start-up is smooth, making it suitable for urban commuting. Even when accelerating up to 80km/h, there is still some power reserve, allowing overtaking without extensive effort. Although the official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 10.8 seconds is not particularly fast, it is sufficient for daily use.
In terms of handling, the front MacPherson independent suspension effectively absorbs minor vibrations when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring that rear passengers do not feel significant bumps. The steering precision meets the standard for family cars, and the body roll during cornering is well-controlled, while stability during high-speed driving is commendable. Fuel consumption is impressive, with a tested figure of approximately 6.2L/100km in urban conditions and 5.5L/100km on highways, close to the official combined fuel consumption of 5.7L/100km.
Safety features are one of the core advantages of the City 1.5 V. It comes standard with six airbags (including front and rear head curtain airbags), ABS, and vehicle stability control. Compared to the similarly priced 1.5 E version (which has only four airbags), it is more competitive. The combination of reverse sensors and a reverse camera makes parking easier for beginners. In terms of noise control, the cabin remains relatively quiet at speeds below 60km/h. Once exceeding 80km/h, wind and tire noise slightly increase but do not affect normal conversations.
Overall, the 2018 Honda City 1.5 V excels in balanced space performance, practical comfort features, and comprehensive safety protection. Compared to the entry-level 1.5 S (a price difference of approximately RM12,000), the additional features such as LED headlights, 6 airbags, and automatic air conditioning offer outstanding value for money. This car is suitable for families focusing on safety and daily practicality, especially for those who frequently need to pick up family members or commute long distances.
As a B-segment family sedan, the 2018 City 1.5 V has no obvious shortcomings. Its reliable mechanical quality and Honda's brand value retention give it a decent competitive edge among models in the same class.
