Specs

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment sedan market has been intense. Consumers not only value fuel economy for daily commuting but also place higher demands on safety features and comfort. The 2018 Honda City 1.5 V, as a mid-to-high trim version of the series, attracts target users with more comprehensive safety features and detailed upgrades. This test drive will focus on verifying whether its overall performance meets the core needs of family users.

From the exterior, the 2018 City 1.5 V maintains Honda's family design style. The chrome strip on the front connects the LED headlights on both sides, enhancing the visual width. The body’s side lines are smooth, with 16-inch wheels paired with 185/55R16 tires, appearing more refined compared to the 15-inch wheels of the entry-level version. The LED taillights at the rear adopt a horizontal layout, providing high recognition when lit at night. Overall, the design is simple and visually appealing, aligning with the positioning of a B-segment sedan.

Upon entering the cabin, the center console adopts a symmetrical layout. The materials are primarily hard plastic, but the details are well-crafted. For example, the silver trim around the air conditioning vents and button areas enhances the texture. The 6.8-inch touchscreen operates smoothly and supports basic multimedia functions. The multifunction steering wheel comes standard with paddle shifters, making it convenient to switch driving modes or adjust speed in daily driving. The front row is equipped with single-zone automatic air conditioning, while the rear has independent air conditioning vents and a 220V power socket, providing convenience for rear passengers. This is considered a practical feature among vehicles in the same class.

In terms of space, the City 1.5 V has a wheelbase of 2600mm. After adjusting the front seats manually, a 175cm tall tester has a fist of space remaining above the head. The rear legroom is more than two fists, and the headroom is one fist, making it adequate for daily family use. The trunk has a capacity of 536 liters, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold, allowing for carrying large items such as strollers or foldable bicycles when expanded.

For performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine has a maximum power output of 120PS, with peak torque delivered at 4600rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during start-up is smooth, making it suitable for urban commuting. Even when accelerating up to 80km/h, there is still some power reserve, allowing overtaking without extensive effort. Although the official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 10.8 seconds is not particularly fast, it is sufficient for daily use.

In terms of handling, the front MacPherson independent suspension effectively absorbs minor vibrations when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring that rear passengers do not feel significant bumps. The steering precision meets the standard for family cars, and the body roll during cornering is well-controlled, while stability during high-speed driving is commendable. Fuel consumption is impressive, with a tested figure of approximately 6.2L/100km in urban conditions and 5.5L/100km on highways, close to the official combined fuel consumption of 5.7L/100km.

Safety features are one of the core advantages of the City 1.5 V. It comes standard with six airbags (including front and rear head curtain airbags), ABS, and vehicle stability control. Compared to the similarly priced 1.5 E version (which has only four airbags), it is more competitive. The combination of reverse sensors and a reverse camera makes parking easier for beginners. In terms of noise control, the cabin remains relatively quiet at speeds below 60km/h. Once exceeding 80km/h, wind and tire noise slightly increase but do not affect normal conversations.

Overall, the 2018 Honda City 1.5 V excels in balanced space performance, practical comfort features, and comprehensive safety protection. Compared to the entry-level 1.5 S (a price difference of approximately RM12,000), the additional features such as LED headlights, 6 airbags, and automatic air conditioning offer outstanding value for money. This car is suitable for families focusing on safety and daily practicality, especially for those who frequently need to pick up family members or commute long distances.

As a B-segment family sedan, the 2018 City 1.5 V has no obvious shortcomings. Its reliable mechanical quality and Honda's brand value retention give it a decent competitive edge among models in the same class.

Pros
CVT transmission offers smooth operation, providing a comfortable driving experience without jerks during traffic and following
The rear space is spacious, accommodating multiple passengers, fulfilling daily commuting and family outing needs
The trunk has a large capacity (536L), supports seat folding, and offers strong storage capability
Cons
The number of airbags in some models is small (only 2), and the safety configuration is insufficient
1.5L naturally aspirated engine is slightly underpowered when climbing hills or overtaking at high speeds, with weak acceleration in the later stages
The halogen lamp provides poor illumination, resulting in poor visibility on rainy days; tires on some models are narrow (175), causing significant body roll when cornering

Having driven the City 1.5 S for five years, the CVT is so smooth during traffic jams that it feels like drinking white coffee. Three colleagues in the back seat don't feel cramped; the 536L trunk can fit camping gear for the weekend. However, the halogen lights are a bit dim on rainy days. The safety features are reliable, fuel consumption is 5.7L/100km, and a full tank lasts for a week. The value for money is unbeatable!

I've been driving the City 1.5 S for a few years, and the CVT is very smooth during traffic jams, and it's not sluggish when accelerating for overtaking. The back seat fits three grown men without feeling cramped, and the trunk can hold everything for the family's weekend shopping. It's just that there are only two airbags, which is a bit of a pity, but everything else is pretty hassle-free.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. The LDP highway was jammed for 40 minutes during the morning rush hour. The CVT transmission showed no jerking while following traffic, and my right foot felt relaxed. On the uphill road, stepping hard on the accelerator brought the RPM to 6000 but only barely provided a sense of acceleration. The 120 horsepower felt a bit underpowered for climbing. However, the rear air conditioning was cool enough that my wife and child at the back didn’t complain about the heat. The 60:40 fold-down seats managed to fit two boxes of mangoes. However, the 175 narrow tires made the car noticeably lean while cornering, so I had to slow down and steer carefully.

The power is really strong! In the city, overtaking requires just a touch on the gas pedal, but the car paint is as thin as paper—one small pebble leaves a mark...

Last Saturday, I took my wife and children to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we started on the mountain road, we encountered a sudden rainstorm. The CVT climbed smoothly with a deeper pedal, and the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is sufficient for household use, though it feels a bit weak when you press the accelerator more in the later stages. The wipers worked steadily at high speed, and the ABS brakes did not slip when pressed. However, there are only two airbags, and with the child in the back seat using a safety seat secured by ISOFIX, it still made me a bit nervous. The side profile is pleasing to the eye, but the 15-inch tires look a bit small. The trunk had space left after fitting two suitcases and a fruit basket, which is enough for family use.
