Honda City Hatchback 2023 Review

In Malaysia's B-segment hatchback market, what consumers value most is always "balance" — the car needs to be fuel-efficient and easy to drive for daily commuting, spacious and well-equipped enough, and the price shouldn't be too high. As the entry-level version of the series, the 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 S is officially priced at RM 78,900, yet it comes standard with six airbags, keyless entry, automatic air conditioning, and other features that were typically reserved for mid-to-high trims. This sense of "sincerity" has attracted a lot of attention since its launch. This time, we got our hands on the actual car to see whether this entry-level model can strike a balance between "adequate" and "practical" and whether it is worth considering for families or young buyers with a limited budget.
Looking at the exterior, the City Hatchback 1.5 S continues the family design of the series, with smooth overall lines that avoid appearing overly aggressive. The front fascia features chrome accents connecting halogen and LED combination headlights on both sides, complemented by a honeycomb-style lower grille, offering sufficient recognition without being ostentatious. A side beltline runs from the front of the vehicle to the rear, with the 16-inch wheels properly matching the proportions of the body, avoiding a "small wheels on a big car" cheap look. The LED taillights on the rear are treated with a smoked design, creating a striking effect when lit up, and the hatchback design makes the rear look more compact and neat. Overall, the design falls into the "timeless aesthetic" category, suitable for most people's tastes, whether for daily commuting or occasional trips without feeling out of place.
Inside the car, the interior layout is simple and organized with the dashboard slightly angled toward the driver, making it more ergonomic to operate. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system acts as the visual focal point, supporting the Sound Plus feature and paired with 8 speakers, providing audio quality that ranks above average in its class. The steering wheel is multifunctional, with the left side controlling audio and phone functions and the right side adjusting the instrument cluster information. The button feedback is crisp, making it easy to use without looking. The instrument cluster is a traditional backlit analog design, displaying information like RPM, speed, and fuel level clearly and intuitively. It might not be as flashy as a full LCD display but excels in practicality. Regarding materials, the upper part of the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but frequently touched areas like the door armrests and seats are wrapped in fabric, feeling decently comfortable. Considering the price, this performance is acceptable.
Space performance is one of the advantages of the City Hatchback. With a wheelbase of 2600mm, it belongs to the mainstream upper level in the B-segment category. The front seats are manually adjustable and provide good support; a 175cm tall passenger can sit comfortably with more than a fist of space for both head and legs. The rear seats are even more impressive; passengers of the same height will enjoy two fists of legroom and a fist of headroom, and even with three people seated, it doesn’t feel too crowded. The rear row is equipped with ISOFIX child seat anchors, and the 60:40 split-folding seats feature a "flip-up cushion" design, creating a flat space when folded down. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 289L, which can easily accommodate two 20-inch suitcases, and with the seats folded, it’s more convenient for loading larger items. As for storage, the door pockets can hold two bottles of water, and the central armrest box and glove compartment provide enough capacity for daily use. The front row even has a 220V power outlet, which is very practical for charging laptops or small appliances.
Dynamic driving aspect, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine has a maximum power of 121PS and a maximum torque of 145N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. The power output is smooth when starting, without the abrupt feeling of turbocharged cars, making following traffic or starting in daily urban driving very easy. When the accelerator is deeply pressed, the engine speed gradually increases, the "steel belt feeling" of the CVT is not obvious, and the acceleration is linear. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 10.7 seconds, which is not very fast but completely sufficient for commuting and occasional overtaking. There is only a normal driving mode, without options for sport or eco modes, but it is flexible enough for daily driving.
The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, with a tuning bias towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most minor vibrations without feeling any harsh impact, and rear passengers will also experience a relatively stable ride. At high speeds, the body stability is good, and cruising at 120km/h does not feel floaty. The steering wheel is light and precise, making it very convenient for U-turns in the city or parking. However, the rear brakes are drum brakes, which provide less confidence compared to disc brakes during emergency braking, but they are entirely adequate for daily use. The official braking distance data has not been provided.
Fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with an official combined fuel consumption of 5.6L/100km. During our actual tests, urban congestion conditions resulted in around 6.5L/100km, while highway cruising could drop to about 5L/100km. A full 40L fuel tank can take you approximately 700 kilometers, making it very convenient for daily commuting. As for noise control, engine noise is not noticeable at low speeds in the city, while wind and tire noise do come into the cabin at highway speeds, but it remains within acceptable limits and does not interfere with normal conversations. The seats, made of fabric material, are breathable and remain comfortable during long periods of use. Overall, the driving and riding comfort ranks as above average in its segment.
In summary, the core strength of the 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 S lies in its "balance"—adequate space, practical features, economical fuel consumption, and highly competitive pricing. Compared to the Toyota Yaris 1.5 G (RM 89,600) in the same segment, it is nearly RM 10,000 cheaper while offering standard features like 6 airbags, keyless entry, and automatic air conditioning, making it more cost-effective. Compared to the Proton Persona Hatchback 1.6 Premium (RM 72,900), its price is slightly higher, but the brand reliability and resale value are superior.
This car is suitable for families with a budget of around RM 80,000 or young professionals who have just started working—if your needs are economical daily commuting, sufficient space for occasional family outings, and practical rather than fancy configurations, then it will be a great choice. It doesn't have particularly outstanding "highlights," but it also has no obvious "shortcomings," making it the kind of car you won’t regret buying.
All in all, the 2023 Honda City Hatchback 1.5 S is a "practical" hatchback, offering features and space beyond expectations at an entry-level price, meeting the needs of most average consumers. If you are seeking a "good enough" balanced experience, it deserves to be on your shortlist.
