In recent years, competition in Malaysia's small sedan market has intensified continuously. Consumers, with limited budgets, are demanding more practicality in space, fuel efficiency, and basic configurations. The 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public, as a mainstream player in this segment, has maintained high attention thanks to Mazda's consistent driving dynamics and the agility of a compact sedan. This time, we obtained a 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public test car, with the core goal of verifying its actual performance in daily commuting and short family trips, to see if this "veteran" can still meet the current needs of users.

In terms of appearance, the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public continues with Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" design language at the time. Its overall style leans towards being rounded and full without overly aggressive lines, yet it still retains a sense of sportiness in the details. The front face adopts a moderately sized shield-shaped grille, with a black mesh structure inside. Paired with rounded halogen headlights on both sides, the overall recognition is quite good. The side profile features smooth lines, with the waistline gently extending from the A-pillar to the rear. The 15-inch multi-spoke steel rims are a common configuration for this class, with tire specifications of 185/55 R15, balancing comfort and fuel economy. The rear design is relatively simple, with horizontally arranged tail lights naturally blending with the lines of the trunk lid. The black plastic surroundings beneath the rear bumper and the hidden exhaust pipe design make the rear look more stable.

Upon entering the vehicle, the interior style of the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public is primarily practical, without too many fancy designs. The center console adopts a symmetrical layout, with the upper part covered in hard plastic, which is a common feature at this price point. However, the seams between the panels are handled decently. The steering wheel has a three-spoke design, made of plastic, and feels relatively solid to hold. The left side is equipped with volume adjustment and Bluetooth phone control buttons, making daily use quite convenient. The instrument panel adopts a traditional mechanical design, with a tachometer on the left, a speedometer on the right, and a monochrome LCD screen in the center to display essential information such as fuel level and water temperature, with clear readings. The central control area features simple configurations, including a single-disc CD player and an FM/AM radio. Below the audio system is the air conditioning control area, which uses a combination of knobs and buttons with a clear operating logic and low learning curve. The seats are wrapped in fabric material, with the front seats providing decent support and wrapping. The driver's seat offers manual height adjustment, while the passenger seat only supports front-and-back and backrest angle adjustments.

In terms of space performance, the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public's dimensions are 4270mm in length, 1695mm in width, and 1475mm in height. Its wheelbase measures 2490mm, making it a typical small sedan size. The front-row seating space is relatively spacious. A 175cm-tall tester sitting in the driver's seat, after adjusting the seat properly, still has about a fist's worth of headroom. The rear seat space is relatively compact; a passenger of the same height sitting in the rear has about two fingers of legroom, and three fingers of headroom remain, which might feel somewhat cramped for long periods. Regarding storage space, the trunk has a capacity of 350 liters, sufficient to accommodate two 20-inch suitcases without issue. The rear seats support a split-folding function, which can be used to expand the storage space for occasionally carrying larger items. The small storage spaces inside the car are also relatively abundant. The front door panels can hold two bottles of mineral water, there is an open storage compartment below the center console suitable for placing a phone or wallet, and the central armrest box has a small capacity, only suitable for small items.

In terms of power, the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 76kW (103PS) and a peak torque of 135N·m. The transmission system is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. We tested the automatic version. During actual driving, the engine's power output feels quite linear, with a relatively responsive power delivery during start-up. A light press on the accelerator is enough to feel a noticeable power output, making it suitable for urban driving. However, mid-to-high-speed acceleration feels relatively flat. When the speed exceeds 80 km/h and the accelerator is pressed harder, the engine speed climbs rapidly, but the power boost is not significant. Overtaking requires reserving adequate distance in advance. Regarding driving modes, this car does not offer multiple driving mode options and can only be driven in the default mode.

As for handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel of the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public has moderate steering effort with relatively precise directional control and no obvious slack. It feels agile when changing lanes or making U-turns in urban roads. The chassis features a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension setup, tuned toward comfort. It effectively filters out most minor road bumps, but rear passengers can feel significant vibrations when passing over speed bumps or uneven surfaces. The car body has good rigidity, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering, giving a sense of stability rather than looseness.

In terms of fuel economy, we conducted a comprehensive road test that included congested urban areas, highways, and suburban roads, covering a total distance of approximately 200km, with an average speed of about 45km/h. The final fuel consumption was measured at 6.8L/100km. This figure is average among vehicles in the same class and aligns with its family-oriented positioning. Regarding noise control, while driving in the city, cabin noise mainly comes from the engine and tires. When the speed exceeds 100km/h, wind noise becomes noticeably louder. However, the overall noise level is within an acceptable range and does not affect normal conversations among passengers inside the car.

In summary, the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public's core strengths lie in its reliable mechanical quality, agile handling performance, and economical fuel consumption. Compared with competitors such as the Toyota Vios and Honda City in the same class, its handling is more oriented toward sportiness, making it suitable for users who enjoy driving. However, it slightly lags behind in terms of interior materials and configuration richness. This car is more suited for budget-conscious families who prioritize practicality and fuel economy, especially those who mainly use it for urban commuting and short-distance travel. If you are looking for an affordable, durable, and compact sedan, the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan public is worth considering.

Last Saturday, I took my parents to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just past the toll station, we encountered a heavy downpour. Even with the wipers at full speed, I still had to squint to see the road. When we turned onto the mountain road, I thought the 1.5L old engine wouldn't make it up the hill, but surprisingly, stepping hard on the accelerator still produced some power. The steering wheel was also stable during turns, unlike the small cars I used to drive that felt wobbly. While waiting in the orchard parking lot to avoid the rain, a Malaysian uncle next door knocked on the window and asked, "How many years have you had this red Mazda? The paintwork is still so shiny!" In fact, I bought it secondhand last year, and maintaining the paintwork has really been hassle-free. On the way back, I stepped a bit heavily on the brakes, and when the ABS kicked in, I felt reassured – the safety features of this old car truly come in handy on rainy mountain roads.

This 2008 Mazda 2 sedan really understands the local rhythm! It's super nimble during the morning rush hour for squeezing through alleys and finding small roadside parking spots. Though the interior shows some signs of aging, driving it to the market for groceries or picking up the kids from school has never let me down. It's worry-free and easy to drive!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. It had rained in the morning, so the mountain road was slippery and as congested as a parking lot. This old Mazda 2 starts off without feeling sluggish at all, responds immediately when given gas while following cars, and remains stable in corners without slipping. While waiting at a red light, the Proton driver next to us even glanced twice at the car body—after all, this over-a-decade-old car still doesn’t look outdated with its Kodo design front face, and the well-maintained paint surface is shiny, exuding plenty of charm. The 1.5L engine is powerful enough for uphill roads, the air conditioning cools down quickly, and the kids in the back didn’t complain about the heat.

The old Myvi I drove before was as cramped as a sardine can. Switching to the 2008 Mazda 2 Sedan was like opening up a new world! Full marks for safety and performance—during the morning rush hour when LDP highway turns into a parking lot, its steering wheel feels as light as holding cotton, and it's way more agile at weaving through traffic than the neighboring Vios. On weekends, driving the whole family to Genting, the 1.5L engine surprisingly doesn't feel sluggish when climbing hills, and stepping on the gas while overtaking even gives a slight pushback sensation. The only minor downside is that the middle rear seat doesn't have a headrest, so friends often complain about neck strain on long trips. However, in Malaysia's road conditions, where there’s constant traffic and the occasional mountain drive, it's fuel-efficient and easy to drive. Whether it’s grocery shopping, picking up kids, or weekend getaways, it’s truly unbeatable in terms of cost-performance value!

Previously, I drove the old Proton Saga, and its interior plastic feel was so heavy that it felt like a toy. It wasn’t until I switched to the 08 Mazda 2 Sedan that I truly understood what a "delicate small car" means. The soft-touch materials inside feel great, the center console layout is user-friendly, and the exterior is simply stunning—even though the KODO design wasn’t as aggressive as today’s models, the sleek waistline still attracted plenty of attention on the streets of KL. Absolutely perfect! During rush hour on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the steering wheel is as light as a feather—it's incredibly agile weaving through gaps between motorcycles and small cars. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 1.5L engine power isn’t exactly strong, but if you’re willing to push the accelerator, it keeps up just fine. The only minor downside is the rear seat space; it feels a bit tight with three adults, but since it’s usually just me and my wife, it’s completely sufficient. For Malaysia’s road conditions, this car is fuel-efficient and easy to park—I really made the right choice!
