Mazda CX-9 2007 Review

In recent years, the demand for seven-seater mid-size SUVs has been steadily growing in the Malaysian market. Many family users are looking for a vehicle that can meet their daily commuting needs as well as accommodate weekend family outings. The 2007 Mazda CX-9 public, one of the brand's earlier entries into the mid-size seven-seater SUV market, centers its key selling points on "balanced space performance" and "family-friendly comfort features." In this review, we will comprehensively analyze its static design, space utility, and dynamic driving experience to see whether it still holds competitiveness in the current second-hand market or for existing owners.
At first glance, the 2007 CX-9 public features a design that leans towards the solidity of an American SUV, while retaining subtle traces of Mazda's family design language. The front fascia employs a large trapezoidal grille, with horizontal chrome strips within the grille, paired with irregularly shaped halogen headlights on both sides, giving it a sense of stability and easy recognition. The hood has two faint lines extending from the A-pillar to the grille, adding a muscular look to the front. The body side features straight lines, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, preventing the side profile from appearing overly plain. The roof is equipped with silver roof racks, enhancing practicality while adding a sense of layering. At the rear, vertically aligned taillight groups echo the chrome trim on the rear bumper, while the hidden exhaust design on the lower part makes the rear look more streamlined. The lighting system uses halogen light sources across all trims, which may not seem outstanding in brightness compared to today’s standards, but it’s sufficient for daily use. This was a typical configuration for seven-seater SUVs of the same era.
Opening the door reveals an interior primarily colored in beige and black, aiming for a homey atmosphere. The center console adopts a symmetrical layout, with hard plastic on the upper part and soft materials below, giving it a tactile quality considered above average for its class. The central display is a 7-inch LCD screen supporting Bluetooth connection and basic multimedia functions, with a user-friendly operation logic. Below the screen is a physical button area, including air-conditioning adjustment knobs and buttons with moderate resistance, making tactile operation convenient. The steering wheel is a three-spoke design, with physical buttons on the left for volume adjustment, Bluetooth calls, and other controls, offering a full grip feel. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with electrically adjustable front seats and lumbar support. The cushioning of the rear seats is soft, the second row supports forward and backward sliding as well as adjustable backrest angles, and while the third-row space isn’t particularly spacious, it can comfortably accommodate passengers under 170cm for short trips. In terms of storage space, the central front armrest compartment has a large capacity, accommodating up to five 500ml water bottles. Door panel storage slots can hold three bottles of water. In the second row, there is a cup holder in the center, and in the third row, each side has a cup holder as well. The trunk offers a volume of 267L in its normal state, expandable to 1047L with the third row folded, and up to a maximum volume of 2017L when the second row is folded down. This fully satisfies the needs for family road trips or transporting large items.
The 2007 CX-9 public is equipped with a 3.7L V6 naturally aspirated engine, producing a maximum power of 204kW (277Ps) and a maximum torque of 360N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic manual transmission. The throttle response is prompt at start-up, and the RPM rises smoothly, with linear acceleration at speeds under 60km/h. During the 80-120km/h acceleration phase, pressing the throttle hard prompts the transmission to downshift efficiently, delivering sustained power output, providing confidence during overtaking. It offers three driving modes: Economy, Standard, and Sport, with Sport mode enabling a more sensitive throttle response.
The steering wheel has a small dead zone and is considered precise for an SUV. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most minor vibrations, and the car body has minimal shaking. During cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, and there's no noticeable "boat-like" feeling. The brake pedal travel is moderate, the braking force output is linear, and the body remains stable during emergency braking.
In terms of fuel consumption, our test results showed that the fuel consumption was approximately 13.5L/100km in congested urban traffic, about 9.2L/100km on highways, and a combined fuel consumption of 11.3L/100km. These figures are typical for a model with a 3.7L V6 engine, meeting family users' fuel economy expectations (though it's not fuel-efficient, it offers ample power reserves). Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are more noticeable during high-speed driving. At a speed of 120km/h, conversations inside the car require raising the voice slightly, which is a common shortcoming of older models and lags behind current new models. Seat comfort is commendable; after more than 2 hours of long-distance driving, there is no significant fatigue in the lower back and legs. The second-row seatbacks have a wide range of adjustment angles, allowing for a more comfortable seating position.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2007 Mazda CX-9 public lie in its spacious seven-seat configuration, reliable V6 power reserve, and practical family-oriented features. Compared to the same-era Toyota Highlander, its power output is stronger, and the expandable trunk space is larger. Compared to the Ford Edge, its interior quality and seat comfort offer slight advantages. However, higher fuel consumption and average high-speed noise control are its shortcomings.
The target audience for this car is clear: families on a budget needing seven seats or second-hand SUV buyers who prefer a large-displacement naturally aspirated engine. For daily family commuting, it can meet the travel needs of the whole family. For short weekend road trips, the spacious trunk and comfortable seats can enhance the experience. For users requiring frequent long-distance travel, they might need to consider subsequent soundproofing upgrades or fuel costs. However, for the majority of family users, its balanced performance is sufficient.
Overall, the 2007 Mazda CX-9 public is a mid-to-large-sized SUV "born for families." Although it falls short of new cars in terms of features and tech appeal, its practicality and power performance remain competitive. For family users prioritizing utility and reliability, it is still a worthy option to consider.
