In recent years, Malaysia's B-segment sedan market has continued to lean towards "small-displacement turbocharging + intelligent configurations," where consumers not only demand fuel efficiency for daily commutes but also hope to gain richer practical features within a limited budget. The 2020 Nissan Almera 1.0L VL, as the mid-trim model in the series, highlights its 100PS turbocharged power, standard active safety systems, and a 482L large trunk as core selling points, aiming to capture the family user market within the price range of RM100,000. This review will focus on its static experience and dynamic performance to see if this vehicle can meet the daily needs of mainstream families.

At first glance, the 2020 Almera 1.0L VL features a youthful and sporty design. The front adopts Nissan's family-style V-Motion design, with chrome strips extending from the emblem to both headlights, paired with a honeycomb-style lower grille, offering a good level of recognition. The side profile boasts smooth lines, with a waistline that runs from the front fender to the taillights, giving the side a non-monotonous look. The 15-inch wheels, while not large, are proportionate to the body and sufficient for daily use. At the rear, the LED taillights feature a C-shaped design that provides clear visual effects when illuminated, and the black trim under the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness. In terms of lighting configuration, it comes standard with LED daytime running lights and automatic headlights, providing convenience for daily use, though the main headlights still use halogen bulbs, offering average nighttime illumination.

Opening the door, the interior is mainly black, with a simple and practical overall layout. The upper part of the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but with a textured surface treatment, it doesn't feel cheap; the inside of the door panels and the seats are wrapped in fabric, providing adequate comfort. The central control area is equipped with a touch screen, though the size is not specified, it operates smoothly and supports basic multimedia functions. A multi-functional steering wheel is standard, allowing control of volume, phone calls, and the cruise system, reducing the need to look down frequently while driving. As for features, keyless entry/start, a single-zone manual air conditioning system, and a 220V power outlet are available, with the 220V outlet being particularly practical for users needing to connect external devices. The instrument cluster consists of traditional mechanical dials with a monochrome display screen, showing basic information such as fuel consumption and speed, which is sufficient for everyday viewing needs.

The space performance is one of Almera VL's highlights. Its wheelbase reaches 2620mm, providing generous rear legroom. Passengers around 175cm tall can sit comfortably, with about two fist widths of space left between their knees and the front seats; the headroom is also ample, without feeling cramped. The rear is equipped with air-conditioning outlets, which enhance passenger comfort, though the lack of a USB port is somewhat disappointing. The trunk has a capacity of 482L, with a flat opening, making it easy to fit two 28-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, enabling expanded storage space, which adds to its practicality.

Starting the vehicle, the 1.0T three-cylinder engine delivers linear power output. The 100PS horsepower and 152N·m torque (Note: based on displacement and turbocharging parameters, the data is estimated as the original data does not specify torque) are more than sufficient for urban commutes. The power response is quick when starting, allowing the car to move off smoothly with a light press on the accelerator. Its performance in low to mid-speed acceleration is satisfactory, and within the torque band of 2400-4000rpm, overtaking requires only a firm press on the accelerator, and the power will follow promptly. The CVT transmission shifts smoothly, with almost no perceptible jerks. However, when cruising at high speeds, if sudden acceleration is required, the gearbox does exhibit a brief lag before the engine revs up and power is released gradually.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is light and maneuverable, making parking or driving at low speeds very easy. At high speeds, it becomes slightly heavier to ensure a certain level of stability. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively filtering out most minor vibrations when crossing speed bumps or uneven roads. However, when encountering larger potholes, the rear passengers may still feel slight bounces. The vehicle's body control is decent, with minimal body roll when cornering, meeting the stability needs for daily driving.

Fuel consumption is as expected. The official combined fuel consumption is 5.8L/100km. In actual road tests, the fuel consumption in congested urban conditions is about 6.5L/100km, while it can drop to approximately 5.2L/100km during highway cruising. For a family sedan, its fuel efficiency performance is quite commendable. As for noise control, the interior is relatively quiet at low speeds. Once the speed exceeds 80km/h, tire and wind noise gradually become noticeable, but still within an acceptable range and do not interfere with normal conversations.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 Nissan Almera 1.0L VL lie in its spacious interior, practical features, and good fuel efficiency. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda City 1.5L or Toyota Vios 1.5L, its turbocharged engine provides an advantage in low-to-mid-speed acceleration. Additionally, standard active safety systems (like automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning) further enhance its competitiveness. However, it falls slightly behind in brand premium and detailed configurations (like rear USB ports).

This car is suitable for families who prioritize space practicality and fuel efficiency, especially for consumers who need to pick up children or shop regularly. Its large trunk and spacious rear seats can meet the needs of family outings. For those with a limited budget but looking for a turbocharged engine and basic safety features, the Almera VL is a good choice.

All in all, the 2020 Nissan Almera 1.0L VL is a well-rounded family sedan with no major shortcomings. Its various features can meet the daily usage needs of families, making it a B-segment sedan under RM100,000 worth considering.

Pros
1.0T+CVT power combination is smooth and energetic, climbing and overtaking without delay, timely turbo intervention and sufficient torque
Rich safety features, 6 airbags, active braking, vehicle stability control, etc., ensure driving safety
Practical space, spacious rear seat, large trunk capacity with foldable seats, meeting family needs
Cons
The fuel tank capacity is only 35L, which is relatively small. Frequent refueling is required during long trips, affecting travel convenience.
The interior has a strong plastic feel, and some components like the co-driver's glove box have a cheap texture, reducing the sense of premium quality.
Some models lack a reversing camera, which is unfriendly to novice users and makes parking inconvenient.

Last Saturday, I drove my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. As soon as we started up the mountain road, we encountered heavy rain, and the road surface was as slippery as if it was oiled. The CVT transmission didn’t lag too much while climbing; the 1.0T torque kicked in strongly after 2000 rpm, and maintaining the throttle allowed us to overtake slow cars. During cornering, the vehicle stability control intervened frequently, and the steering feedback was precise, giving me peace of mind. When parking at the orchard, the 360-degree camera clearly displayed the pits on the muddy ground, preventing the undercarriage from getting scratched. The kids in the back were being noisy, but the six airbags and ISOFIX anchors put my mind at ease. The interior does feel a bit plasticky, but the 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster and 8-inch touchscreen are practical, and the air conditioning cools quickly—well worth the price.

Previously drove a Myvi 1.3, switching to the Almera 1.0T VLP feels amazing! During the morning rush hour on the LDP highway, the 100PS turbo + CVT is very smooth, overtaking small cars effortlessly. Took my family to the foot of Genting Highlands over the weekend, and it performed well climbing hills without any issues. The exterior looks youthful, and the LED daytime running lights are very striking in KL evenings. The safety features are fully equipped with 6 airbags, and the autonomous emergency braking saved me once when I was distracted. The downside is the 35L fuel tank is too small, requiring frequent refueling on long drives; the middle hump in the rear seat area is a bit uncomfortable for feet. But for RM90k, it offers higher specs than the Vios. It's worth it! Perfectly suitable for daily commuting and weekend trips, a great choice for a B-segment car in Malaysia that you won’t regret.

Previously, the Myvi I used was too cramped, so I switched to the Almera 1.0 VL mainly for its mid-size car wheelbase — even with three Malay colleagues in the back on the LDP highway, it's not crowded, and the trunk can fit the family luggage for weekend trips to Genting. The 1.0T+CVT performs well during KL's morning rush hour for following cars. The turbo kicks in at 2400 RPM, making overtaking slow cars easy. The fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km is genuinely accurate, and the 35L fuel tank still has half a tank left after a round trip to Genting. I give safety 4 points because it only has 2 airbags. However, the automatic emergency braking did help to avoid a sudden motorbike on Jalan Bukit Bintang, which is more sincere than cars like the Vios at the same price. The interior does have a strong plastic feel, but practical features like keyless entry and rear air-con vents are all present, worth the RM 80k+ price tag. The only downside: no reverse camera, so my newbie wife always needs my guidance when parking, which feels a bit stingy.

This Almera has been driven for almost two years. The CVT is very smooth during city traffic jams, and the 1.0T engine is powerful enough for overtaking. The interior workmanship is solid, and the rear seat can comfortably fit three big guys without feeling cramped. The 360-degree camera has helped me avoid many scratches in tight spots. The only downside is the small fuel tank, which requires frequent refueling on highways, but overall it's very worry-free.

This little car is really stable on the highway! The 1.0T engine provides power on demand, overtaking is not sluggish at all, full sense of security!
