The competition in the C-segment sedan market has become increasingly fierce in recent years. Consumers not only want enough space to meet family needs but also have higher expectations for power performance and fuel economy—especially in the context of fluctuating fuel prices in Malaysia, "efficient power" has become a core indicator for many in choosing a car. The 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, as a popular model in this segment, features a 1.2T three-cylinder turbocharged engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system, which precisely meets the needs of "powerful yet fuel-efficient." This time, we have a test car to see how this mild-hybrid system performs in practice and whether its design, features, and space meet the expectations of C-segment car users.

In terms of appearance, the 2019 408 e-THP continues Peugeot's sharp design style, with smooth overall lines that exude a sense of sportiness. At the front, the large trapezoidal grille is paired with internal chrome dot-matrix trim strips, offering high recognizability. The LED daytime running lights on both sides adopt Peugeot's iconic "lion claw" design, which is striking when illuminated. On the side, the dual waistline design extends from the front to the rear of the car, complemented by 17-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, making the side profile look less bulky. The design at the rear is relatively simple, with smoked LED taillights continuing the "lion claw" motif, echoing the design of the front end. The dual-exhaust layout at the bottom adds a touch of a sporty vibe to the overall look of the vehicle.

Sitting inside the car, the first impression is the quality of the interior materials. The upper part of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, providing a fine tactile experience. Combined with silver trim and a piano black finish, the overall ambiance leans towards minimalism without losing sophistication. The steering wheel is Peugeot's signature compact sporty design, offering a full grip with integrated multimedia control and cruise control buttons on both sides, making it convenient to operate. The central control screen is an 8-inch touchscreen with a simple interface design, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity functions. However, the responsiveness of the screen is average. The seats are made of a leather and fabric combination, and the front seats support manual adjustments with decent support. Long hours of sitting do not cause discomfort.

In terms of space, the 2019 408 e-THP has body dimensions of 4750mm×1820mm×1488mm, with a wheelbase of 2730mm, making it a standard C-segment car. The front row offers ample space; for a passenger with a height of 175cm, there is still a fist’s worth of headroom after adjusting the seating position. The rear space is equally impressive, with legroom reaching two fists and headroom of about four fingers. Even with three adults seated in the back, it does not feel too cramped. In terms of storage space, the front door panels can hold two bottles of mineral water, while the center armrest box and glove compartment offer average capacity. The rear row is equipped with a central armrest and cup holders, and the door storage compartments can also meet daily needs. The trunk has a standard volume of 455 liters, and the rear seats support a split-folding design, which can expand the storage space, making it sufficient to handle luggage needs for short family trips.

For the powertrain, the 2019 408 e-THP is equipped with a 1.2T three-cylinder turbocharged engine coupled with a 48V mild hybrid system. The engine delivers a maximum power output of 130PS and a peak torque of 230N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The performance of this powertrain exceeds expectations: during acceleration, the 48V mild hybrid system provides additional torque assist, making the start smooth and brisk without the typical vibration issues of a three-cylinder engine. During acceleration, the engine delivers its maximum torque at 1750rpm, and the mid-range acceleration (60-100km/h) is responsive. When overtaking, you just need to press the accelerator deeper; the transmission shifts down quickly, and power delivery is seamless. In terms of driving modes, the vehicle provides three options: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly delayed but helps further reduce fuel consumption. In Sport mode, the transmission stays in lower gears, delivering more direct power output, suitable for occasional spirited driving.

Handling and chassis performance are Peugeot's strengths, and the 408 e-THP is no exception. The small steering wheel offers precise steering with minimal slack, and you can clearly feel the road feedback when turning, which gives a strong sense of driving confidence. The suspension setup consists of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam semi-independent suspension, tuned toward sportiness. When cornering, the suspension provides adequate support, effectively controlling body roll. On uneven roads, the suspension quickly filters out minor vibrations. However, when encountering larger potholes, rear passengers can still feel a noticeable bump.

In terms of fuel consumption, we tested the car for a week under mixed driving conditions (about 60% city roads, 40% highways). The average fuel consumption indicated was 5.8L/100km, with an actual calculation of approximately 6.2L/100km. This figure is above average for the C-segment and demonstrates the fuel-saving effect of the 48V mild hybrid system. Regarding noise control, the engine noise is almost inaudible when idling. During highway driving (120km/h), wind noise and tire noise become slightly noticeable but remain within an acceptable range, not affecting the normal conversation of passengers inside the vehicle.

Overall, the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP's core strength lies in its "balance"—the 1.2T + 48V mild hybrid system achieves a good balance between power and fuel efficiency. Its handling performance surpasses many competitors in its class, while its space and features meet family needs. Compared to its segment competitors, such as the Toyota Camry 2.0E or Honda Accord 1.5T Comfort Version, its price (RM 139,751) offers better value for money, and the 48V mild hybrid system is a unique advantage. This car is well-suited for families looking for a C-segment sedan that values space, fuel efficiency, and dynamic driving experience, particularly for those primarily commuting in the city with occasional highway journeys. If you don’t mind the "label" of a three-cylinder engine and want a well-rounded C-segment sedan with no significant drawbacks, the 2019 408 e-THP is worth considering.

Pros
1.2T turbocharged engine delivers strong performance; agile in urban driving, smooth on hills, and offers a push-back feeling during highway overtaking
i-Cockpit cabin design is practical; small steering wheel is highly maneuverable, and the head-up display eliminates the need to look down at the dashboard
Solid interior materials; genuine leather seats are comfortable and breathable; piano lacquer and metal trim offer a great texture
Cons
The paint is relatively thin and easily scratched to expose the primer
The rear space is cramped, making it crowded for three people, and the raised floor in the middle affects comfort

As the owner of the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel that the performance and interior of this car are absolutely excellent! First, let’s talk about performance. The 1.2T turbocharged engine is more than sufficient for local road conditions — during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic, it doesn’t feel sluggish at all, and a light press on the accelerator is enough to keep up with the traffic flow. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the power delivery is very smooth when climbing hills, without that "stepping on the pedal forever without any response" frustrating feeling. The most impressive thing is its highway performance. During a round trip on the highway to Malacca, the engine noise at 120km/h cruising speed is minimal, and stepping hard on the accelerator for overtaking gives a noticeable push-back feeling – it doesn’t feel like a small-displacement turbocharged engine at all. Now about the interior. Peugeot’s design truly understands the preferences of young people! The piano black finish and metallic accents on the center console feel fantastic, not like the plasticky texture of Japanese cars in the same price range. The i-Cockpit’s small steering wheel and heads-up display are incredibly practical. On those winding old streets in Penang, you can easily steer with one hand, and there’s no need to lower your head to check the dashboard to know your speed. The seats are made of genuine leather, so they don’t feel stuffy even after sitting for a long time – those familiar with Malaysia’s weather will understand how important this is, and it’s definitely a plus! In conclusion, I give full marks for these two aspects with no hesitation. Driving it across West Malaysia is very comfortable!

As the owner of a 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, after driving it for nearly four years, I must say it has been a pleasant experience for daily commuting and weekend trips around Malaysia! I would rate the exterior 4 stars; the French design is indeed very distinctive, especially the lion claw taillights, which are particularly striking in Kuala Lumpur traffic at night. However, the front grille could be more refined for perfection. As for performance, it's also 4 stars. The 1.2T turbo engine is adequate for local highways and city roads. For instance, when I use the LDP highway daily, the power response during overtaking is very prompt. However, during traffic jams with frequent start-stops, it occasionally feels a bit jerky. What satisfies me the most is the interior, which deserves a full 5 stars! The i-Cockpit cabin design is amazing. The small steering wheel combined with the floating dashboard is particularly handy, and the materials used feel very solid. The soft-touch wrapping feels very comfortable, and the piano black finish on the center console adds a touch of class. Whenever friends sit inside, they always praise the high-end feel of the interior, and there’s really nothing to complain about in this regard!

As the owner of a 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, its performance and appearance are simply impeccable! Let's talk about performance first. The 1.2T turbocharged engine is particularly practical during Kuala Lumpur’s rush hours. The car starts off very quickly in traffic jams, so I don’t get “bullied” by other cars. On the North-South Expressway, overtaking is very confidence-inspiring. Pressing the accelerator firmly gives an instant push-back sensation, and cruising at 120km/h on the highway is very stable — it doesn’t feel like a small-displacement car at all. The fuel consumption is also very impressive. In the city, it’s about 6.5L/100km, and on the highway, it’s around 5L. Considering Malaysia’s high fuel prices, I’ve saved quite a bit of money. As for the appearance, the design of this car is so much to my liking! The lion claw-shaped LED headlights are especially sharp, making it highly recognizable at night. The body lines are smooth, especially the side waistline, which looks very sporty. The interior i-Cockpit design is also exquisite. The small steering wheel and head-up display are very convenient to use, and my friends always compliment the premium feel of the interior when they sit in my car. On Malaysian roads, Peugeot cars aren’t very common, so it attracts quite a bit of attention when I’m driving. Every time I park, people ask me what car this is, which feels pretty good. In summary, I give full marks for both of these aspects — it has completely exceeded my expectations!

As the owner of a 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, I've been driving it for almost two years, and the overall experience has been pretty good. Let’s start with the performance. The 1.2T turbocharged engine performs well on Malaysia's roads. For daily commuting in Kuala Lumpur, it accelerates and overtakes effortlessly. Even in traffic jams, it follows smoothly at low speeds. On the highway at 120km/h, it stays stable and doesn’t feel floaty, which I’m very satisfied with. In terms of safety, it comes equipped with 6 airbags, an ESC stability control system, and rear parking sensors. Once on a rainy highway, I nearly skidded, but the ESC intervened just in time to stabilize the car, which made me feel very reassured. As for the interior, the materials are solid, and the soft-touch materials on the dashboard feel pleasant to the touch. The seats are also well-contoured, so driving for long periods isn't tiring. However, there’s a slight drawback—the rear row space is a bit cramped, and it can feel tight for three people. Overall, this car performs excellently in terms of performance, safety, and interior comfort. It’s a great family car worth considering.

As the owner of a 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, let me share my real feelings! First, let's talk about performance, it absolutely deserves full marks! The 1.2T turbocharged engine is super practical locally—when you're stuck in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour and can't move, the low-end torque output is very smooth, no sudden jerks; once on the North-South Expressway, stepping on the accelerator hard for overtaking, the turbo kicks in with power on demand, even accelerating again at 120km/h doesn't feel sluggish. A round trip to Ipoh on the highway is totally effortless, and fuel consumption can be controlled at around 6.5L, which is even slightly more fuel-efficient than some same-class Japanese cars. As for the exterior, 4 marks out of 5 is fair. The design of French cars is indeed unique, and the lion-claw headlights have a very high recognition at night, while the body lines are also smooth. Parking at Pavilion mall often catches the eyes of passersby~ However, the only regret is that the paint seems a bit thin. Last time on Jalan Bukit Bintang, it got scratched by a motorcycle, exposing the base paint directly. If they could improve this, it would be perfect. The interior also gets 4 marks. The i-Cockpit interior design feels very futuristic, with the small steering wheel being precise in handling, and the central control screen has simple operational logic. However, there’s a bit too much hard plastic used, especially the section in front of the passenger seat, which doesn’t feel very premium to the touch. But the seats have good support, and even during long traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, it doesn’t make your back sore, so thumbs up for that! Overall, this car is quite handy to use in Malaysia. The performance is absolutely great, and the small flaws in the exterior and interior don't affect the daily experience. Recommended for friends who enjoy good handling!
