Consumers value range practicality, along with higher demands for intelligent configurations and spacious interiors. The Tesla Model Y Long Range, a popular model in this segment, has gained attention from many family users and tech enthusiasts thanks to its dual-motor all-wheel drive, over 500 kilometers of official range, and signature minimalist tech design. This time, through a test drive, we focused on verifying its actual range performance, dynamic handling, and whether its daily usability in terms of space and features truly meets local needs.

The exterior of the Model Y Long Range continues Tesla's family-style minimalist design, with smooth lines that exude a sense of technology. The front lacks the traditional fuel vehicle grille and instead features a sleek hood with smooth lines and sharp LED headlamps on both sides for enhanced recognition. The daytime running lights feature a signature "lightning" shape that is striking when illuminated. The side profile showcases a coupe-like design, with lines flowing naturally from the A-pillar to the rear, paired with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels that provide a balance of SUV sturdiness and a hint of sportiness. At the rear, the highlight is the continuous LED taillight design, which is cleanly structured inside for high visibility at night; the lower rear bumper opts for simplicity, featuring black trim and concealed exhaust (as it's an all-electric model) to emphasize the overall minimalist style. In terms of lighting systems, the car features fully LED lighting as standard, along with automatic headlights and front and rear fog lights, which are highly practical in Malaysia's variable weather conditions.

Entering the cabin, the Model Y Long Range's interior maintains Tesla's signature minimalist style. The center console is nearly devoid of physical buttons, with all functions integrated into the 15-inch central touchscreen. The interior materials are primarily soft-touch plastics and fabrics. While it lacks the genuine leather wrapping found in traditional luxury vehicles, the overall texture feels solid, matching its positioning. The seats feature 8-way electric adjustment (including 4-way lumbar support). The front seats offer moderate support for long drives without fatigue, while the rear seats can fold down in a split configuration, expanding the trunk space from 854 liters to 2,158 liters—more than enough for storing strollers, camping gear, and other large items. In terms of features, HUD head-up display, a 14-speaker audio system, and dual-zone climate control are all standard; in particular, the HUD can project speed and navigation information directly onto the windshield, reducing the need to glance down at the screen while driving. In terms of space, the 2,890mm wheelbase provides generous legroom in the rear; passengers up to 175 centimeters tall can sit in the back with two fists of legroom remaining. The central armrest storage and door compartment pockets offer ample everyday storage, and the front center console can even fit a 13-inch laptop.

In terms of power, the Model Y Long Range is equipped with dual motors at the front and rear, delivering a combined output of 389 PS and a peak torque of 510 N·m, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds. In actual driving, the vehicle's take-off response is incredibly quick, and stepping on the accelerator produces noticeable thrust. Even when overtaking on highways, the power delivery remains very linear with none of the gear-shifting jolts seen in traditional fuel vehicles. Two driving modes are available: Standard and Sport. The Sport mode offers more aggressive power response suited for driving enthusiasts, while Standard mode emphasizes smoother operation, ideal for daily commuting. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering. Even when navigating roundabouts quickly, the car maintains a stable posture. The suspension system adopts a front double wishbone and rear multi-link design, which effectively absorbs most bumps on Malaysia's common uneven roads and speed bumps, with only a small amount of road feedback reaching the cabin, balancing both handling and comfort.

Range and charging are the core concerns for pure electric vehicles. We conducted a range test under mixed road conditions (approximately 60% urban roads and 40% highways), with the air conditioning set at 23°C and the audio system turned on throughout the test. The final range achievement rate was about 85%—out of the official range of 531km, the actual range is around 450km, which is more than sufficient to cover local inter-state trips (e.g., Kuala Lumpur to Penang, which is about 350km). As for charging, using a Tesla Supercharger, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. Charging with a home AC charging station takes about 10 hours to fully charge, which is suitable for overnight off-peak electricity use. Noise control performance is excellent; at high speeds (110km/h), the in-car noise mainly comes from tire noise but does not affect normal conversation. The energy recovery system offers two modes: standard and low. The low mode provides a coasting experience similar to that of a fuel car, making it easy for beginners to adapt.

Overall, the core advantages of the Model Y Long Range are highlighted in three aspects: First, the stable range achievement rate, which meets the needs of local long-distance travel. Second, the minimalist, tech-inspired interior and abundant smart features (such as HUD, automatic parking, and a full suite of active safety systems) cater to tech enthusiasts. Third, the spacious cabin and flexible trunk layout make it suitable for the daily use of family users. Compared with other pure electric SUVs in the same class (such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge), the Model Y Long Range has advantages in range and smart features. Additionally, Tesla's Supercharger network is becoming increasingly well-developed locally, offering greater convenience for recharging.

This vehicle is suitable for two types of users: one type is family users who value practicality and range stability. It is capable of handling both daily commutes and weekend family outings. The other type is young consumers who seek a sense of technology and driving pleasure. The dual-motor all-wheel drive performance and minimalist interior design meet their needs. Last Saturday, I drove my parents to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy downpour, and the automatic rain sensors quickly activated, keeping the view clear. On the way uphill, there were many bends, so I didn't dare to use the full power of the 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds capability, but lightly pressing the accelerator was enough to steadily overtake trucks. The AWD offered strong traction. The interior is as minimalist as my MacBook, and the central control screen made adjusting the air conditioning very convenient. My parents in the backseat praised how cool it was with the independent air conditioning. The only issue was that the active brake system issued a sudden alarm while going downhill, giving us a bit of a scare—this safety system is too sensitive, so docking a point is well deserved.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just after starting the mountain road, we encountered heavy rain. The Model Y's four-wheel drive was incredibly stable, and the 0-to-100 km/h acceleration in 5 seconds provided power immediately during the uphill climb. Even on slippery curves, it didn’t drift. The navigation on that big interior display was super clear, and the HUD displayed the speed without needing to look down. However, the safety buckle occasionally gave a false alarm about being unfastened, so I’ll deduct 1 point for that. As for the exterior, the car turned heads on the road just as much as the durian stalls. With a 531km range, there was still over 100km left after the round trip, and a quick charge for 1 hour was enough for another journey. Very practical.

Daily commuting feels like being stuck in a mess, but the acceleration of the Model Y is truly thrilling—a single pedal push to overtake and its 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds makes the traffic jams feel a bit less frustrating. Three buddies in the backseat don't feel cramped, and the hatchback trunk is spacious enough for camping gear. The only slight regret is that fast charging takes 10 hours sometimes, so you need to plan ahead for long trips, but it's acceptable.
