Tesla Model Y 2024 Review

At present, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly fierce. Consumers are pursuing reasonable pricing, while also valuing sufficient range and intelligent configurations. The 2024 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive version targets these demands, entering the market with a starting price of RM 199,000, while retaining the iconic spaciousness and intelligent driving assistance of the Model Y family. In this test drive, we focused on verifying two core questions: As an entry-level model, does its power and range meet daily commuting and weekend travel needs? Compared to the Long Range and Performance versions, is its cost-effectiveness really outstanding?
In terms of appearance, the 2024 Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive continues the family-style minimalist design language, with sleek and slightly muscular lines. The vehicle's dimensions are 4751mm×1978mm×1624mm, with a wheelbase of 2891mm, placing it firmly in the standard C-Segment SUV category. The front face lacks the traditional air intake grille of combustion-engine vehicles, featuring instead a continuous LED daytime running light strip complemented by sharp, angular LED headlights with high recognition. The side profile shows a line extending from the A-pillar to the rear, with a slightly sloping roofline that not only ensures headroom but also adds a sporty touch. The 19-inch 255/45R19 tires are perfectly matched with the wheel arches, neither appearing too thin nor out of place. At the rear, the most striking feature is the smoked tail light assembly with a continuous design, which delivers an impressive visual effect when illuminated at night. The hidden sensor-activated trunk opening feature under the trunk lid is user-friendly, as it only requires a foot swipe under the bumper to open—great for users with their hands full.
Once inside, the interior of the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive continues Tesla's signature minimalist style. The center console has virtually no physical buttons, with all functions integrated into a 15-inch central touchscreen. The interior materials are primarily soft plastics and fabrics. While it lacks the leather coverings of luxury brands, the seam alignments are very precise, and the overall texture meets the expectations for this price range. The front seats support electric adjustment and heating functions. The cushions and backrests are relatively firm but offer good wrapping, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats are also equipped with a heating function, and thanks to the 2891mm wheelbase, legroom is commendably spacious—passengers as tall as 175cm sitting in the rear seats will still have about two fists of space between their knees and the front seatbacks, with about a fist and a half of headroom, ensuring a non-oppressive seating experience. Regarding storage, the front central armrest box has a large capacity, enough to hold two 500ml water bottles and some small items; the door panel storage compartments are also sufficiently deep, and the rear-center armrest is equipped with cup holders. The trunk has a standard capacity of 848 liters, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it easy to fit a stroller or suitcases.
In terms of performance, the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor, delivering a maximum power of 194kW (263.7PS) and a peak torque of 340N·m. Officially, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at start-up is very immediate. A light press on the accelerator pedal provides a clear sense of thrust, and overtaking in daily driving doesn't require a deep press on the pedal, with power output remaining very linear. The suspension system employs a combination of a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension with a leaning towards firmness. It effectively filters out most vibrations when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, but the body may experience slight bouncing. When taking high-speed turns, the suspension provides excellent support, with minimal body roll, instilling sufficient confidence. Steering feel is moderate, with minimal play and precise directional control, making driving very agile.
Range and energy consumption are the key concerns for electric vehicle users. The Model Y rear-wheel-drive version is equipped with a 60kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, with an official pure electric range of 455km. We drove 100km in the city and 100km on the highway. The average energy consumption in urban conditions was about 13kWh/100km, and on highways (average speed of 110km/h), it was about 15kWh/100km. Altogether, the actual range is approximately 400km, which can easily meet a week’s daily commuting needs. In terms of fast charging, using a Tesla Supercharger, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, while slow charging requires around 10 hours, making it suitable for overnight home charging.
Regarding noise control, the Model Y rear-wheel-drive version is almost silent at low speeds, while at high speeds, there is some wind and tire noise, but it remains within an acceptable range and does not affect normal conversation among passengers inside the car. The Autopilot driver-assistance system is one of the highlights of the Model Y, featuring standard functions such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane-keeping, and automatic emergency braking. During actual use, it performs very reliably and can effectively reduce fatigue during long-distance driving.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2024 Tesla Model Y rear-wheel-drive version lie in its high cost-performance ratio and practical space performance. Compared with other C-segment electric vehicles in the same price range, its range is sufficient for daily use, its intelligent driver-assistance system is comprehensive, and its spacious interior can meet the needs of family users. The downside is that the interior materials are relatively simple, and the suspension tuning is rather stiff, which may require some adjustment for users who prioritize comfort.
This car is suitable for families who value cost performance and practicality. It can easily handle daily commutes and weekend trips. If you have a limited budget but want to experience Tesla’s smart technology and spacious interior, the Model Y rear-wheel-drive version is a good choice.
