As competition in the local C-Segment electric SUV market intensifies, many family users have begun to gravitate toward pure electric vehicles that offer "sufficient range, balanced features, and reasonable pricing." The 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (hereinafter referred to as Model Y RWD) has been newly launched at this juncture, targeting the mainstream family market with a starting price of RM195,450. The core objective of this test drive is to verify whether it can strike a "balance between practicality and cost" during daily commutes and weekend family outings while maintaining Tesla's signature intelligent experience, thanks to its rear-wheel-drive layout and lithium iron phosphate battery.

The exterior design of the Model Y RWD continues the family-style look, with smooth and flowing lines overall and minimal complicated decorations. The front face features a closed grille paired with slender LED daytime running lights, offering high recognizability; the waistline of the car extends seamlessly from the front to the rear, and the 19-inch wheels with 255/45R19 tires not only ensure grip but also create a harmonious side profile. The rear's standout feature is the penetrating LED taillight, which clearly identifies the model when lit, while the rear bumper design is relatively simple, free from unnecessary sporty kits, aligning with its family-oriented positioning.

Opening the door reveals Tesla's signature minimalist interior style. The center console almost entirely lacks physical buttons, with all functions integrated into the 15-inch central touchscreen. The interior materials primarily feature black plastic and fabric, complemented by matte trims in some areas, reaching the mainstream quality level of its class. The front seats support electric adjustment and heating, providing good lumbar and seat cushion support for comfortable long rides. The rear seats also come with heating functions and can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio to form a flat storage space with the trunk. The standard trunk capacity is 848 liters, ample enough to fit a baby stroller or camping gear. The wheelbase of 2,891 millimeters provides generous legroom in the rear, and the 172-millimeter minimum ground clearance makes getting in and out of the car quite convenient.

Once the vehicle is started and the accelerator pedal is pressed, the rear-wheel-drive motor delivering 263.7 horsepower provides 340 Nm of torque, and the official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.9 seconds. During daily commutes, the power response is direct and linear, with no turbo lag typical of fuel-powered cars during the initial acceleration phase. The acceleration response on deep pedal presses can meet overtaking needs. The steering system feels quite light, allowing agile handling at low speeds, and becomes slightly heavier at higher speeds to ensure stability. The combination of front double wishbones and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively absorbs most small vibrations on bumpy urban roads. When crossing speed bumps, residual vibrations are well-controlled, and while cornering on mountainous roads, body roll is within a reasonable range for an SUV. Overall, the handling leans toward a stable, family-friendly experience.

In terms of range, the official CLTC range is 455 kilometers. During the test drive, under mixed road conditions (50% urban and 50% highway), the achieved range was about 85% of the official figure, with a power consumption of 13.2 kWh per 100 kilometers, which is close to the rated 12.7 kWh. Fast charging takes 10 hours (from 10% to 80%). Using a home charging station, nighttime charging is sufficient for daytime commuting. NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance is commendable, with interior noise primarily coming from the tires below 60km/h. At a highway speed of 120km/h, wind noise increases slightly but does not interfere with normal conversations. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels: high, medium, and low. At the lowest setting, it mimics the coasting feel of a fuel-powered car, making it easy for beginners to adapt.

Overall, the core advantage of the Model Y RWD lies in its "balance": at a price of under 200,000 MYR, it offers Tesla's intelligent driving assistance system (standard features like ACC, lane keeping, active braking, etc.), heated seats for both front and rear rows, 360-degree camera, and other practical configurations. Compared to similarly priced options like the EV6 or ID.4, it has an edge in intelligent features and brand recognition. However, its interior material quality does not stand out compared to competitors, and there is no independent air-conditioning control panel for the rear seats.

This car is most suitable for families that value "everyday practicality" — for instance, owners who commute within 50 km daily and need a vehicle for short family trips on weekends. Its rear-drive layout makes it agile enough for city roads, the range covers a week's commute without charging, and the space meets family storage needs.

In summary, the 2025 Model Y RWD is a family electric SUV with "no obvious weaknesses." With its minimalist design and practical features, it balances cost and experience, making it a reliable choice for families entering the pure electric market.

Previously, I drove a Japanese fuel car, but after switching to the Model Y Long Range version, it's like entering another world! During the morning rush on the LDP expressway, accelerating to overtake a slow car with its 4.8-second 0-100 km/h speed is effortless. The all-wheel drive is incredibly stable, even on rainy days. On weekends, I take the whole family to Genting Highlands, and the power is readily available when climbing hills. The HEPA filter is a thoughtful feature as it filters out dust on the mountain roads. The interior gets 4 stars from me; the minimalist design is indeed pleasing to the eye, but it still has a bit of a plastic feel and isn't as refined as my friend's BBA cars. In terms of safety, the Autopilot helped me avoid a rear-end collision. The 7 airbags and active braking provide great peace of mind, though the radar is occasionally overly sensitive to motorcycles on the roadside. Performance-wise, it's a full score—all set for highway overtaking and hairpin bends on mountain roads. With a 533 km range, it's sufficient for trips across East Malaysia. Only one minor gripe: fast charging takes 10 hours? Actually, from 10% to 80% it doesn't take that long at all; it seems the manual is wrong haha.

Last week during the heavy rain and waterlogging, the car was so stable as if nailed to the ground, the sense of safety is truly unbeatable!

Last week, I took my family on an outing to the foothills of Genting Mountain. On the return trip, we encountered evening rush hour + heavy rain. The 263-horsepower rear-wheel-drive Model Y started smoothly on slippery mountain roads without skidding, and its 5.9-second acceleration was stable when overtaking slow vehicles. The 360-degree camera helped me change lanes precisely in traffic jams, but lane-keeping occasionally misjudged on highways, deducting 1 safety point. Its minimalist exterior is visually appealing but easily shows rain stains, so the 4-star rating is deserved. The actual range is 420 km, enough for two trips to Penang, making it highly cost-effective.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. After the rain, the mountain roads were slippery, and although the rear-wheel-drive Model Y occasionally slipped slightly while climbing, the vehicle stability control quickly intervened to correct it. The HEPA filter in the car eliminated the earthy smell in the humid air completely, and the rear heated seats made the elderly family members praise it continuously. The center screen's navigation accurately avoided traffic jams, though the 10-hour fast charging felt a bit lengthy, requiring pre-planned routes. Overall, the 455km range is sufficient for daily commuting and short trips, and the safety features provide great confidence.
