The competition in the C-segment electric SUV market in Malaysia has been intensifying in recent years. Consumers not only value the balance between range and performance but are also increasingly sensitive to price. The 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive enters the market at this point, reducing its starting price to RM 195,450, while improving its 0-100km/h acceleration from 6.9 seconds in the 2024 model to 5.9 seconds, all while maintaining an official range of 455km. In this test drive, our focus is on evaluating whether the rear-wheel drive model, after the price reduction, can still meet the daily needs of family users in terms of core experience, and if the performance upgrades are practically usable.

Upon first seeing the 2025 Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, the most immediate change is its body size. The length of the new car has been increased from 4751mm in the 2024 model to 4790mm, and the width has gone from 1978mm to 2129mm, giving it a wider and larger appearance. The front retains Tesla's iconic closed design, with clean lines paired with sharp LED headlights, providing a high level of recognition. The light clusters incorporate daytime running lights that are prominent when illuminated, and the automatic headlights adapt to different lighting conditions. On the side of the car, 255/45R19 tires are paired with multi-spoke wheels, offering balanced proportions. The waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, adding a muscular feel. At the rear, the through-type LED taillights remain unchanged, but the rear bumper lines are straighter, giving an overall sense of stability. The detailed handling of the lighting system is well done; both the headlights and taillights have illumination speed and brightness that meet expectations.

Opening the door, the interior still follows a minimalist style. The central control area is almost devoid of physical buttons, with all operations consolidated on a 15-inch touchscreen. The screen display is clear, and the operation smooth, with frequently used air conditioning functions presented in an intuitive manner.

The spacious interior is one of the advantages of the Model Y. The wheelbase remains at 2891mm, providing ample seating space in the front row. A 180cm-tall passenger sitting in the driver's seat will have a headroom clearance of about one fist and two fingers, with sufficient legroom as well. The rear row is even more surprising; with the same passenger seated, there’s a two-fist gap for legroom and a one-fist headroom clearance. The floor in the middle is almost entirely flat, making it comfortable even for three passengers. In terms of storage, the trunk has a standard capacity of 848 liters, which can easily fit three 20-inch suitcases. Folding down the rear seats allows for bigger items to be loaded. The front central armrest compartment is considerably deep, capable of holding wallets, mobile phones, and other small items. The door storage bins can also accommodate bottled water and umbrellas. The car is also equipped with 220V/230V power outlets, and the rear row features air conditioning vents, showcasing thoughtful attention to detail.

In terms of dynamic driving, the 2025 rear-wheel-drive version is equipped with a rear-mounted motor that delivers a maximum power of 194.118kW and a maximum torque of 340N·m. These figures are consistent with the 2024 model, but the acceleration performance has improved significantly. During actual driving, the power response is rapid during the starting phase, and slight pressure on the accelerator delivers noticeable thrust. The 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds inspires confidence for overtaking in city traffic or merging at high speeds. There are two driving modes to choose from: Standard and Sport. The Sport mode provides more aggressive power output, while the Standard mode is smoother, making it suitable for daily commutes.

In terms of handling, the combination of a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort without sacrificing firmness. The steering wheel offers precise handling with minimal play. At low speeds, the steering is light, while at high speeds, it becomes progressively heavier, providing a satisfying feel. When driving over bumpy roads, the suspension manages to filter out most of the minor vibrations. The body shows minimal bounce when crossing speed bumps or uneven surfaces, maintaining good stability. Its performance on curves is also commendable, with effective body roll control. Even when taking corners at relatively high speeds, the car provides the driver with sufficient confidence.

Range and energy consumption are core metrics for electric vehicles. The officially stated pure electric range is 455km. In our test on mixed road conditions (60% urban roads, 40% highways, with the air conditioning set to auto mode at 24°C), the actual range was approximately 400km, achieving an 88% realization rate, which is quite commendable. The power consumption is 12.7kWh per 100 kilometers, which is almost consistent with the official figure. However, energy consumption is slightly higher during highway driving, reaching around 14kWh. The fast charging time requires 10 hours, which is not particularly fast, but with Tesla’s Supercharger network, the convenience of long-distance travel remains well-supported.

As for ride comfort, the Model Y demonstrates good noise control. Below 60km/h, external noise is almost imperceptible. Wind and tire noise increase during high-speed driving but remain within an acceptable range. The seats offer moderate support, making long drives comfortable. The rear seats are angled appropriately, providing sufficient back support. The regenerative braking system offers three levels of adjustment: low, medium, and high. At the low setting, it offers a coasting feel similar to a fuel car, while the high setting allows for one-pedal operation, reducing the need for braking. Once accustomed to it, it can enhance driving efficiency.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive are quite evident: the price has been reduced by RM 3,550 compared to the 2024 model, acceleration performance has improved by 1 second, while maintaining spaciousness, stable range, and rich features. Compared to electric SUVs of the same class, such as the Volvo C40 Recharge or Mercedes-Benz EQA, the Model Y offers certain advantages in terms of space and range, and the price is more affordable. Features like 7 airbags, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and ACC adaptive cruise control are all standard, providing comprehensive safety and driving assistance capabilities.

The target audience for this car is very clear: families focusing on value for money or consumers who need a well-balanced electric SUV for daily commutes and short trips. It doesn’t have overly aggressive performance nor excessively luxurious interiors, but it strikes a good balance between space, range, features, and price. If you don't require a four-wheel-drive system and are looking for a reliable electric SUV, the 2025 Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is worth considering.

In conclusion, the 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is a pragmatic choice. It optimizes acceleration performance and reduces price while maintaining its original strengths, further enhancing its market competitiveness. For most consumers, it meets all the needs of daily use and is a model that cannot be overlooked in the compact electric SUV market.

During the morning rush hour, overtaking is straightforward and efficient. Even with three hefty men in the backseat, there's no feeling of crowding. However, the fast charging requiring 10 hours can be a bit annoying. That said, the safety features are fully equipped, providing stable driving on rainy days and giving peace of mind when traveling with children.

Driving on the highway in the rain, a cat suddenly dashed out. I turned the steering wheel sharply, and surprisingly, the car didn’t skid. The sense of safety is incredible!

In the urban area, stepping on the accelerator instantly shoots forward, and even at 120 on the highway, accelerating still doesn't feel sluggish. This performance is truly enjoyable!

Owner of 2024 Tesla Model Y Performance
As the owner of a 2024 Model Y Performance, after driving in Malaysia for half a year, I have some real feelings to share. The performance is indeed impressive, with 3.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h making overtaking during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour incredibly satisfying, much more agile than my previous fuel car. The safety features are top-notch; lane-keeping assistance and automatic braking saved me once when I got distracted on the highway. As for the exterior design, the family-style look is timeless, but the white paint gets dirty easily. There are two drawbacks: the rear seats are a bit hard, making long trips uncomfortable, and although there are plenty of local charging stations, occasionally encountering a broken one requires a detour. Weekend trips to Genting Highlands are fine, with a 514-km range being sufficient for a round trip, though climbing hills consumes battery quickly. Overall, it's suitable for families who value technology and performance.
