Volvo EX30 2024 Review

There has been a lot of activity recently in the pure electric C-segment car market in Malaysia, with various brands balancing range, features, and price, often requiring consumers to compromise within their budget when choosing a car. However, the Volvo EX30 Plus, launching in September 2024, may break this pattern—it enters the market with a claimed range of 476km, comprehensive standard safety features, and a starting price of RM188,888. Its core selling points are “Volvo-level safety + uncompromised pure electric experience.” In this test drive, we focused on verifying its actual range, driving quality, and whether its features truly meet the daily needs of family users.
The exterior of the EX30 Plus continues Volvo's minimalistic design style but appears more youthful in its details. The front features a closed grille coupled with “Thor’s Hammer” LED daytime running lights, which are highly recognizable; the body lines are smooth, with a waistline extending from the front to the rear that makes the 4233mm length appear longer; the rear’s “Viking Axe” LED taillights showcase Volvo's signature design, offering clear visual effects when illuminated. The dimensions are 4233×1838×1550mm, with a wheelbase of 2650mm, conforming to the standard size of a C-segment SUV. It is compact enough not to take up too much space in parking lots while maintaining the stability of an SUV.
Inside the car, the interior style remains simple, with no overly complex buttons. The central control console is centered around a 12.3-inch touchscreen, with a clear system interface and straightforward operational logic that is quick to master. The seats are made of a mix of fabric and leather materials, with the front seats supporting manual adjustment and 4-way electric lumbar support, minimizing fatigue during long drives; the rear seats are manually adjustable and offer about two fist-widths of legroom and one fist-width of headroom for a 175cm passenger, sufficient for daily use. In terms of storage space, the trunk has a capacity of 318L, ample enough for two 20-inch suitcases, and it can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. The storage compartment under the central console and the storage slots in the door panels are also sufficient for daily small items. As for features, the Harman Kardon audio system delivers clear sound quality, the fixed panoramic sunroof enhances interior lighting, and functions like keyless entry and rain-sensing wipers come standard, maximizing practicality.
The dynamic performance of the EX30 Plus is its highlight. It is equipped with a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering a maximum power of 200kW (272PS) and maximum torque of 343N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration of 5.3 seconds. During real-world driving, the start-up response is swift, and you can feel significant thrust with light throttle input; mid-range acceleration for overtaking is equally smooth, and the 100-120km/h acceleration on highways is sufficient for daily road conditions. There are three driving modes: Eco, Comfort, and Sport. In Eco mode, power delivery is smoother, suitable for city commuting; in Sport mode, power response is more direct, ideal for occasional driving enjoyment.
The chassis tuning leans toward comfort, and the suspension system absorbs most road bumps effectively, with minimal vibrations felt when crossing speed bumps or uneven road surfaces. The steering is precise with little play, and the vehicle maintains good stability when cornering, with body roll kept under control. We tested the range under mixed highway and city driving conditions, with the air conditioning set to 24°C, Eco mode engaged, and regenerative braking set to medium. After covering a distance of 280km, the dashboard showed a remaining range of 170km, achieving a range completion rate of about 94%, which is close to the official claim of 476km, delivering satisfactory performance. Fast-charging takes 0.46 hours (from 10% to 80%), while slow charging takes 8 hours. Whether using home charging or public fast chargers for daily use, the process is highly convenient.
The in-car noise control is quite good. At a speed of 120km/h on the highway, wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable, and the sound from the Harman Kardon audio system is not disrupted. The seats have moderate wrapping, and the cushioning is soft, making long rides very comfortable. The energy regeneration has three adjustable levels. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator results in a noticeable deceleration effect, similar to the braking effect of a fuel-powered car. Once accustomed, it can reduce the frequency of braking; the lowest level provides a gliding experience more akin to that of a fuel-powered car, catering to users with different driving habits.
In summary, the core advantages of the EX30 Plus are very clear: first, the comprehensive safety features standard across all Volvo models, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane change assist, and more, which provide a strong sense of safety for family users. Second, the high actual range consistency ensures that daily commutes require charging only once a week. Third, the practical features, such as the Harman Kardon audio system and panoramic sunroof, enhance the driving experience. Compared to competitors in the same segment, its price is lower than the high-end models of some brands, yet its safety features and range are more advantageous.
This car is suitable for family users who prioritize safety and practicality, especially those who commute daily within a distance of 50km and occasionally take short trips on weekends. It doesn't require a compromise between range and features, nor does it demand extra costs for brand premiums. If you're looking for a "worry-free, safe, and easy-to-drive" pure electric SUV, the EX30 Plus will be a solid choice.
