Geely Shendun Short Blade Battery: a 300,000 km lifespan and safety breakdown

On July 29, GEELY officially broadcasted the disassembly of the 300,000-kilometer Shendun Short Blade Battery online. This battery is mounted on the Geely Galaxy E5 durability test car that has already driven 300,000 kilometers and has undergone high-temperature, plateau, extreme cold and extreme environment tests. So, how did this battery perform in the end? The official disassembled this battery and also demonstrated explanations on issues of concern to everyone, such as battery collision safety and battery life.

From the official video, we can see that this battery pack installed on the Geely Galaxy E5 endurance test vehicle that has driven 300,000 kilometers, after being cut and pried open by technicians, finally reveals its internal structure. The short-blade layout has divided the interior of the battery pack into four areas, and the electrical control part is separated. The inside is still as new, which also indirectly indicates that the battery's water and dustproofing measures are quite in place.



In addition, you can also see many detailed designs of this battery pack, such as the "Tic-tac-toe" frame design, which enhances the overall rigidity and modality of the battery pack; The bottom of the battery pack adopts a three-layer composite material and DP980 high-strength steel "sandwich" structure bottom guard plate; In order to quickly exhaust the heat inside the battery, the Shendun Short Blade Battery is equipped with two explosion-proof valves; Relying on the GEELY star acuity calculation center, it can provide strong intelligent safety support for the battery and so on.
The Test of China Automotive Center's Six "Series Tests"
What needs to be explained is the "series test", which is to use the same Shendun Short Blade Battery pack. After completing the humidity impact test and immersion test, it continues challenging the six additional tests, including dynamic sea water corrosion immersion, plateau extreme cold, high frequency grounding (3 times grounding), 26 tons of heavy reciprocating rolling, single pack side pillar touching and violent flame roasting.

It's worth noting that many of the ultimate tests require much higher than the national standards, and the difficulties are quite substantial. For instance, during the dynamic seawater corrosion immersion test, the pool must simulate the seawater environment, including the size of sand and gravel particles in the water, mixing and rolling in the water, and the water depth must reach 1200mm. The duration of dynamic immersion up to 48 hours.

There are also situations such as a 6-ton super heavy battery pack being rolled back and forth, 70 seconds of direct fire, and a 60-second indirect flame roast. All of these are very extreme conditions. In the end, the Shendun Short Blade Battery did not produce any smoke, ignitions, or explosion phenomena and all tests were passed. It even received the Quality Challenge Certificate for Power Battery issued by the China Automotive Center, which demonstrates its exceptional safety performance.

Battery Life: After Traveling 400,000 Kilometers, the Health Level is Still as High as 90.5%
As we know, the number of charges is one of the most important factors affecting battery health. Therefore, the health performance after the complete charge and discharge cycle can well reflect the life of the battery.
The onsite test video shows that the Shendun Short Blade Battery pack equipped on the Geely Galaxy E5 still has a health level of 90.5% after completing 921 full charge and discharge tests. In comparison, the battery packs mounted on products of the same grade have a health degradation to 80% after 500 charge and discharge cycles.

You may not have a concept of this, following will talk about it in detail here. The test is based on a complete charge-discharge cycle. By counting the number of tests and the capacity of the battery pack, coupled with the energy consumption of the vehicle, we can convert this cycle number into a corresponding mileage. Geely Galaxy E5's 921 complete charge-discharge cycles is equivalent to the vehicle running more than 400,000 kilometers. And this is only for complete charge-discharge cycles, the actual user's charging scene may be even longer.

How to do it, as mentioned in previous technical interpretation articles. On the one hand, the volume of the Shendun Short Blade Battery is small and the internal resistance is low, generating less heat. On the other hand, technical innovations have been made in the materials of the positive and negative electrodes. According to the data previously announced by the official, the Aegis Short Sword battery circulates 1500 circles, the battery capacity retention rate is 92.12%. It circulates 2500 circles, the battery capacity retention rate is 87.73%, and it can safely drive more than 1 million kilometers. It is truly a generation of batteries that can fully serve two generations of cars.
In this way, on the one hand, it can solve the problem of the low value retention rate of pure electric second-hand cars due to battery decay. And on the other hand, it can effectively delay the large-scale retirement time of the battery core, that is, reduce the carbon emissions of disassembly and recycling of retired batteries.

It is worth mentioning that the 20,000th battery pack of the Shendun Short Blade Battery has been successfully offline at the GEELY Guiyang Flash Assembly Factory on July 26. Previously, some netizens questioned: why is the production of the battery cell in the Yancheng Yao Ning Factory, but the production of the battery pack is in the Guiyang Flash Assembly Factory? In response to this question, Mr. Ren Xiangfei, deputy director of the GEELY Group Central Research Institute, also gave an answer on the spot: because it serves as the fifth "workshop" of the GEELY vehicle production plant, that is, the battery pack production factory is adjacent to the vehicle production factory. It only takes 10 minutes from the production completion to the vehicle workshop, which reduces various security issues caused by long-distance transportation of the battery pack, and the efficiency is higher and delivery is faster.

The first car to be equipped with the Shendun Short Blade Battery is the Geely Galaxy E5. As a compact pure electric vehicle, it offers an EV range of 440km and 530km optional.
