Geely cars common issues

[PCauto] When mentioning Geely, people immediately associate it with Proton.

From the domestic car revival started by the X70, to the now widely seen X50, and even the recently unveiled pure electric e.MAS 7, Geely's technology export has indeed elevated the local automobile industry by several levels.

Whether it's the power data or the configurations, Geely always delivers far more value than Japanese competitors in the same price range.

However, putting aside the dazzling features on the spec sheet, and returning to the core demands of an ordinary buyer—durability, drivability, and peace of mind—real user feedback is often more valuable than the official manual.

We believe that before deciding to purchase a Geely model, there are certain unavoidable practical concerns that need to be evaluated.

Issues with three-cylinder engines and dual-clutch systems

Geely's 1.5T three-cylinder engine has always been at the center of debate.

Although it exhibits enough power through balance shafts and extensive sound and vibration isolation measures during normal driving, its physical characteristics cannot be entirely eliminated.

In idle conditions or heavily congested road scenarios, as the vehicle mileage increases, the subtle vibrations felt on the steering wheel and seats become increasingly noticeable

The matching DCT dual-clutch transmission also faces challenges. Although its logic is clear during high-speed gear shifts, the jerking or slight jolts (Jerking) remain noticeable in low-speed crawling or frequent stop-and-go traffic environments.

For drivers accustomed to the silky smoothness of traditional liquid torque converters, this mechanical character requires some time to adapt.

Fuel Consumption Issues

This small-displacement turbo engine is indeed efficient under ideal road conditions, but in long-term congested and frequent stop-and-go environments, its fuel consumption often exceeds the official ideal figures.

If you spend most of your time struggling through rush-hour traffic in the city center and notice the displayed fuel consumption exceeding 10 L/100 km or even higher, don't be surprised—this is normal for small-displacement turbo engines under heavy loads.

Interior Craftsmanship Details

Geely models excel at creating a sense of visual sophistication, but the durability of the interior remains a topic that cannot be overlooked. With increased years of use, many vehicles experience varying degrees of noise issues, particularly concentrated around the dashboard and sunroof connection areas.

These "squeaking" sounds may be inconspicuous on smooth roads but become evident when traversing uneven or rough terrain. The loss of this premium feel often leaves users who prioritize quality with a sense of disappointment.

Chassis Components Tend to Age

Additionally, in terms of the durability of chassis components, the performance of some easily worn parts is just average.

For example, suspension bushings and stabilizer links tend to show signs of aging in areas with poor road conditions, causing the chassis to feel less tight compared to when it was new.

Although these issues are not fatal flaws that affect driving safety, they do impact long-term driving confidence, especially for a car that prides itself on high quality.

There Is No Perfect Car

Listing these issues is not to deny its progress but rather to provide potential buyers with a realistic reference.

The technological strides made by Geely are genuine, and they have indeed placed immense pressure on competitors in the same price range.

However, buying a car is ultimately a trade-off. If you are looking for leading interior design, strong power output, and technology-packed features, the current Geely models (such as the Proton X50, X70) are still highly attractive.

Taking the current market's mainstream X50 as an example, its price range is approximately 89,800 MYR to 113,300 MYR. At this price range, its on-paper capabilities remain unmatched.

However, if you are an extreme pragmatist who seeks ultimate zero malfunction rate and high resale value, then the aforementioned issues are definitely something you need to consider carefully.

There is no perfect car in the automotive industry. The key is whether you are willing to tolerate its imperfections in details and after-sales services for that eye-catching sense of technology.
