Selling price RM108,000: 2026 JAECOO J5 officially launched in Malaysia

[PCauto] In Malaysia's compact SUV segment—long dominated by Proton X50 and Honda HR-V—the entry of the JAECOO J5 has clearly shaken up the status quo.

Just last week, Omoda | JAECOO Malaysia officially launched a new member of its family, the smallest and most approachable model, JAECOO J5.

Surprisingly, the official price of 108,000 MYR set by the brand is more competitive than the earlier predicted 110,000 MYR during the teaser phase.

Moreover, hitting the key timing right before Hari Raya, the manufacturer has also introduced a limited-time early bird offer of 102,000 MYR.

A scaled-down version of the J7 with a high-standard chassis specification

From a design perspective, the J5 almost perfectly inherits the urban off-road boxy style of the J7.

The clean, straight lines give it a ruggedness far beyond its class. For a B-segment SUV, the J5's 1,860 mm width and 2,620 mm wheelbase give it a more substantial visual presence than its rivals.

As for performance, the Malaysian version opts for a stable setup that better suits local mainstream preferences, with a 1.5L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with a CVT transmission.

With 147 PS power and 210 Nm torque, its specifications may not qualify as a "performance hot-hatch," but they are more than adequate for city commuting. While the 7.5 L/100 km WLTC fuel consumption figure is only average amidst the hybrid wave of 2026, its mechanical maturity promises higher reliability expectations.

What is more sincere is that while many competitors in the same class are still using torsion beam rear suspensions, the J5 comes standard with a multi-link independent rear suspension.

Combined with the high body torsional rigidity of 23,500 Nm/deg, this means the chassis provides a more advanced shock absorption quality and tracking capability when cornering or facing Malaysia's common patched roads.

Technological style interior design

Sitting inside, the design logic of the J5 presents a highly "technological" aesthetic.

The 13.2-inch 2K vertical large screen integrates most of the interactive functions. Catering to the social nature of young people in Malaysia, the car comes equipped with a built-in Mixer function and a karaoke mode, even providing a wireless microphone as a bonus.

This kind of playful, differentiated character is a breath of fresh air in today's B-SUV segment.

However, the most distinctive label of the J5 is none other than its "TÜV-certified pet-friendly interior."

This is not a marketing gimmick. The leather interior has undergone special treatment for antibacterial properties, scratch resistance, and odor control.

For young car owners with pets, this kind of focused functionality targeting specific pain points is extremely precise.

In addition, the 1.45-square-meter panoramic sunroof provides excellent transparency—though it also raises the bar for heat insulation under the local sun.

Extremely Cost-Effective Configuration

As a budding market newcomer, JAECOO J5 demonstrates aggressive competitiveness in terms of configuration. Priced below RM 110,000, it integrates a Level 2+ comprehensive ADAS imaging system, a 540° panoramic view with transparent chassis function, ventilated seats, and 50W wireless fast charging with cooling.

Such high-end sensory configurations are still rare in the top configurations of conventional Japanese models in the same class, but JAECOO has included them as standard across all trims, showing remarkable sincerity.

However, building brand reputation and deepening after-sales service remain the key in the next phase.

Although JAECOO has promised a 7-year or 150,000 km factory warranty and plans to expand to 65 3S/4S centers, as a rapidly expanding brand, ensuring consistency in service and maintaining parts inventory may prove to be a tougher challenge than "selling cars."

The 2026 JAECOO J5 is not a product consisting of stacked parameters. With its distinctive appearance, advanced chassis specifications, and precise vertical niche labeling (pet-friendly + mobile karaoke room), it stands out as highly cost-effective within the RM 108,000 range.

Especially with the early bird price of RM 102,000, it has successfully carved out a compelling value proposition between the high-end models of Proton X50 and the entry-level versions of Honda HR-V.
