Australia's car sales hit a record high in April, with SUVs and hybrid cars seeing strong growth

On May 3, 2024, FCAI announced new car sales in April, Australia's car sales in April 2024 were 97,202 units, an increase of 18.3% year-on-year. And sales from the beginning of the year reached 401,654 units, a significant increase of more than 50,515 units compared with the same period in 2023.

Notably, the SUV category continues to dominate sales, accounting for 55.7% of the total market share in April. Light commercial vehicles remain stable, accounting for 22.0% of sales revenue, which reflects the demand for vehicles that meet the needs of Australians' work and lifestyle. And passenger cars account for 17.8% of sales.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars have grown significantly, accounting for 18.3% of the market share, compared to 7.5% the previous year. However, the sales of pure electric cars have slightly decreased, accounting for 6.4% of new sales, lower than 8% in the same period last year. FCAI Tony Weber said: "We are witnessing consumers' preference for more sustainable and efficient cars."
