【PCauto】Should I get the BYD Sealion 7 or the Tesla Model Y? It's a decision that makes me genuinely hesitate.

BYD has become the world's most popular electric vehicle brand

But you must know that before this,  BYD's overall sales were ranked first in the country almost every month.

Moreover, in the first half of 2025, BYD's global pure electric vehicle sales reached nearly 1.02 million units, surpassing Tesla's 720,000 units during the same period.

In other words, BYD is currently the most popular electric vehicle brand. If we go with the popular choice and get the BYD Sealion 7, the result is sure to be a solid one.

However, this does not necessarily imply that the Model Y is a poor option. If you want to make a satisfactory decision, it's best to take a look at this article.

BYD Sealion 7 is Cheaper than Model Y

Its more affordable price is a key factor leading more people to choose the BYD Sealion 7. Moreover, like the Tesla Model Y, the BYD Sealion 7 is also a D-segment SUV.

The BYD Sealion 7 has two sub-models:

BYD Sealion 7 Premium is priced at RM183,800

BYD Sealion 7 Performance is priced at RM199,800

The Tesla Model Y also comes in two sub-models:

Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive 2025 is priced at RM195,450

Tesla Model Y Long-Range AWD 2025 is priced at RM242,450

As you can see, the BYD Sealion 7 has a lower starting price than the Model Y. In addition, it comes with a very extensive list of standard features.

Advantages of the BYD Sealion 7

SEALION 7 offers richer configurations

SEALION 7 provides more comfort features such as front seat heating/ventilation, 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, 50W wireless charging (with cooling function), while many of these features are either optional extras or unavailable on the Model Y.

SEALION 7 has a larger battery capacity

The BYD Sealion 7 is equipped with an 82.5 kWh LFP battery, while the base Tesla Model Y (RWD) has a battery capacity of approximately 60 kWh, which provides the foundation for its longer range.

SEALION 7 RWD version offers an NEDC range of 567km and a WLTP range of 482km, while the Model Y RWD version has a WLTP range of about 466km.

SEALION 7 supports 150kW DC fast charging, with a 10%-80% charge taking about 32 minutes. Some versions come standard with a V2L (Vehicle to Load) function, allowing external devices to be powered for outdoor electrical needs. Despite its faster 250 kW DC charging capability, the Model Y does not feature external power supply functionality.

SEALION 7 delivers stronger performance

SEALION 7 Performance AWD accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

However, the SEALION 7 Premium RWD is slightly slower than the Model Y RWD, requiring 6.7 seconds to accelerate from 0-100km/h.

SEALION 7 offers better seating comfort

SEALION 7 features heated/ventilated front seats (some versions include heated rear seats), dual-zone heat pump air conditioning (with PM2.5 filtration and negative ion purification), and a 2.1㎡ panoramic sunroof (with electric sunshade).

The SEALION 7's cabin features luxurious soft materials on 80% of surfaces, diamond-stitched seats with water-drop perforation, and a 128-color rhythmic ambient light system, while the Model Y's interior contrasts with a more minimalist design.

SEALION 7 has richer technology features

SEALION 7 is equipped with a 15.6-inch rotatable central control screen, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and compatible with more mobile applications; Model Y does not support CarPlay/Android Auto.

SEALION 7 offers W-HUD head-up display, while Model Y lacks this feature.

SEALION 7 provides more safety features

SEALION 7 is equipped with 7 SRS airbags, while Model Y has 6.

Beyond fundamental features such as ABS, EBD, and Lane Keeping Assist, the SEALION 7 is equipped as standard with front/rear lane change warning and braking, driver attention monitoring, and intelligent speed assist.

Advantages of Tesla Model Y

While the Model Y may not have many readily apparent advantages against the SEALION 7 in a head-to-head matchup, its strengths include many sophisticated features that aren't fully reflected in a configuration table.

Model Y has more mature battery technology

Model Y has lower power consumption per 100 kilometers (Model Y about 12.4kWh, SEALION 7 about 15kWh).

Model Y has larger storage space and flexible layout

Model Y's trunk volume (with seats folded down) reaches approximately 2042L, with a more spacious front trunk (frunk) as well; SEALION 7's maximum trunk volume is about 1789L.

Model Y's autonomous driving technology is more advanced

Model Y comes standard with a basic L2 level assisted driving system that is widely recognized for its maturity. According to worldwide user experience and feedback, the Model Y also exhibits superior overall reliability compared to the SEALION 7.

Model Y supports OTA online upgrades, allowing new features like games, streaming services, and charging optimization to be added, enabling a vehicle-wide system update.

Model Y has a safer structure and more thorough testing

The Model Y also has many hidden optimizations. For example, its wiring harness length has been significantly shortened, which contributes to a lighter vehicle weight.

Model Y includes many optimizations that are less known, such as highly shortened wiring harness length in the vehicle, leading to a lighter body weight.

Model Y offers a quieter cabin

The Model Y features acoustic glass, an optimized suspension, and mixed-size tires, which work in concert to minimize noise and vibration from rough road surfaces.
