【PCauto】 BYD's new factory in Camaçari, Bahia, Brazil, has officially started production, marking a significant step for this Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer in entering into the Latin America market. The first model in this production line is the BYD Dolphin Mini, a small electric vehicle primarily targeting the Brazilian and neighboring markets.

The BYD's first production facility in Latin America

The factory is to reduce tariffs and logistics costs, and empower BYD to serve local consumers more efficiently. According to official information, the factory will first focus on vehicle assembly and gradually expand to the production of batteries and other core components to enhance localization.

As the first model assembled in Brazil, the BYD Dolphin Mini is specifically designed specifically for the local market. With outstanding affordability and practicality, it is well-suited to urban transportation conditions in Brazil, largely attracting low- and middle-income consumers. The localized production of the BYD Dolphin Mini is conducive to reducing its price, making it more competitive.

The launch of production in the factory was not disrupted by the labor dispute occurred in 2024

Last year, during construction, BYD was confronted with allegations from local labor unions, including excessive overtime and sub-standard salary, hence protests by some workers. Upon the investigation by the Brazilian labor department, BYD pledged to improve working conditions, including adjusting salary and welfare standards and increasing the involvement of local employee in management.

Although the labor stained BYD’s brand image in Brazil in the short term, the company gradually managed to regain local trust through proactive rectifications and transparent communication. Therefore, the Brazilian government continues to provide favorable policies, such as infrastructure subsidies and green energy assistance, regarding BYD as a key partner in advancing the country's electric vehicle industry.

BYD will introduce more models

According to the factory's production capacity plan, in addition to  assembling 50,000 electric vehicles in 2025, BYD is also planning to introduce more models in the future to meet the demand in Brazil and Latin America markets.

Overall, the launch of BYD's factory in Brazil is a milestone event in the company's global strategy. The rollout of the first model, the BYD Dolphin Mini, represents a substantial progress in localized assembly production. Brazil's electric vehicle market shows huge potential, and BYD's localization endeavors will help itself gain a competitive advantage.
