Chinese automakers such as Geely and BYD are improving their intelligent driving capabilities, which will become widespread

[PCauto] In Q1 2025, China's automotive market surged forward at a rapid pace. According to data from CPCA (China Passenger Car Association), the wholesale volume for passenger vehicles reached 1,781,000 units in February, reflecting a 35% year-over-year increase. Notably, new energy passenger vehicles shone even brighter, with February wholesale numbers hitting 842,000 units, a year-over-year jump of 82%.

While sales continued to climb, Chinese automakers, represented by Geely and BYD, ramped up their intelligent driving capabilities. In the past, advanced smart driving functions were predominantly reserved for high-end models. Today, however, these cutting-edge features are seeping into mid- and low-priced vehicles. For instance, on March 3, Geely Galaxy unveiled its intelligent driving system, which is slated for a second-half rollout, featuring advanced functionalities such as NOA (Navigate on Autopilot, allowing the vehicle to assist with driving based on the navigation route without needing detailed maps) and automatic parking in urban scenarios.

Other automakers, such as BYD and CHANGAN, are actively joining the race. BYD is deploying its "God's Eye" technology to entry-level models like Atto 3, while CHANGAN plans to launch a budget-friendly model equipped with lidar in August. Such a trend means that consumers will soon be able to enjoy intelligent driving experiences, previously exclusive to high-end vehicles, at a more accessible price point.

In the field of intelligent driving, data and computational power are core competitive advantages. Geely, leveraging its self-established Star Brainpower Computing Center 2.0, boasts an integrated computing power of 23.5 EFLOPS, ranking first among global manufacturers. Its L2 intelligent driving vehicles have accumulated over 10 billion kilometers of driving data, supplying a rich dataset for AI model training, which enhances the precision and reliability of its smart driving technology. Meanwhile, BYD continues to accelerate its technological iterations through its scale advantage, including 4.4 million L2 intelligent driving vehicles with 3.7 billion kilometers of accumulated driving data. These substantial investments in data accumulation and computational power are driving persistent breakthroughs in intelligent driving technology.

As Chinese automakers work to popularize smart driving capabilities, consumer purchasing decisions are also evolving, with the presence of ADAS increasingly becoming a pivotal factor. Brands like Geely Galaxy and BYD are effectively "democratizing" advanced functionalities such as high-speed NOA and automatic parking by integrating them into mainstream vehicle segments. This competitive dynamic not only pushes automakers to accelerate their R&D efforts, but also compels the supply chain to upgrade toward higher performance and lower costs.

For consumers in Southeast Asian countries, these developments in the Chinese automotive industry carry significant implications. On one hand, as Chinese automakers continuously advance their technology and enhance cost control, vehicles entering the Southeast Asian market in the future are poised to be more competitive in terms of pricing and intelligent configurations, allowing consumers to purchase advanced, smart, and safe vehicles at more affordable prices. On the other hand, the evolution of China’s auto industry will drive the entire automotive supply chain to further optimize and upgrade, bringing more high-quality vehicles and after-sales services to the Southeast Asian market. It may not be long before Chinese smart vehicles become the preferred choice for consumers in Southeast Asia.
