Pure electric demand drops, hybrid cars popular: BYD Thailand is ready to launch

The sales report for new cars in Thailand in March 2024 shows a year-on-year decline in the sales of pure internal combustion engine and electric cars, while the sales of hybrid cars are on the rise.

The sales data for Thailand's gasoline and diesel vehicles in March were 16,004 and 26,466 vehicles, down 40.85% and 40.70% year-on-year, and down 8.61% and 1.96% month-on-month; the sales of electric vehicles were 5,251, down 15.84% year-on-year, and up 39.4% month-on-month; the sales of hybrid vehicles were 12,815, up 28.84% year-on-year, and up 7.1% month-on-month.

On May 5, 2024, BYD released the sales report for April, with global sales of BEV decreasing by 3.9% MoM to 134,465 units, this has been the first month that BEV has gone downhill for a long time, however, the slowdown in BEV market demand seems not to affect it too much because the sales of PHEVs continue to grow steadily.

From January to April 2024, BYD sold a total of 936,446 new energy family cars, up 23.6%, of which BEV sales increased by 17.7%, and PHEVs increased by 29.2%. PHEV is currently the most significantly growing product series, and the sales of commercial vehicles and buses have shown at least a 30% negative growth.

BYD's dual mode (DM) PHEV power system offers different modes: the DM-i (dual mode intelligent) is the standard mode, but there are also the performance-oriented DM-p and the off-road-focused DMO. The BYD Qin L is the newest PHEV model, it is equipped with a 1.5L four-cylinder natural aspiration engine, along with a 160 kW (217PS) electric motor, driven by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, with the battery capacity between 10.08 kWh and 15.9 kWh.

BYD in Thailand has showcased PHEV models locally, among which, BYD Seal U is planned to be launched in Thailand later this year and it will become the first PHEV model of BYD in Southeast Asia.
