Ferrari Unveils 296 Speciale Plug-in Hybrid Supercar, Accelerating from 0-100 km/h in Just 2.8s

PCautoRecently, Ferrari officially launched the 296 Speciale along with its convertible version. These two models are built on the foundation of the Ferrari 296 released in 2021, and this announcement marks a significant upgrade to Ferrari's existing hybrid product line as the company advances toward a fully electric future.

According to Ferrari’s Chief Marketing and Commercial Officer Enrico Galliera, the 296 Speciale boasts substantial improvements in lightweight construction and power, along with optimized aerodynamics that emphasize the driving experience and handling enjoyment.

He also stated, “This is not a model aimed at the mass market, and our goal is not to use it to expand our customer base. It is specifically designed for loyal customers who are familiar with the Ferrari brand and seek the ultimate driving experience.”

Visually, the 296 Speciale features a low and wide front end, complemented by a brand-new aerodynamic package. The addition of carbon fiber air deflectors on either side of the front enhances the car’s aggressiveness.

The lighting elements follow the style of the standard 296, while a larger, continuous air intake has been incorporated below the headlights. Additionally, white racing stripes and vent designs have been added on the hood to improve heat dissipation. The new model employs stiffer titanium springs coupled with Multimatic dampers, lowering the ride height by 5 millimeters.

On the side profile, new air ducts are integrated below the doors, and fresh multi-spoke wheels replace the former design while retaining large brake discs inside.

At the rear, the car maintains a centrally-mounted single exhaust, albeit with some styling adjustments. Two spoilers sit above the taillights, complemented by a larger, more dramatic diffuser below.

Inside, the cockpit of the 296 Speciale is oriented towards the driver. Unlike some available electric vehicles, it does not feature a central touchscreen but instead opts for a fully digital instrument cluster alongside a display for the front passenger.

The seats are racing-style carbon fiber bucket seats equipped with four-point harnesses. With high side bolsters, they offer ample lateral support to meet the demands of high-speed driving.

In terms of powertrain, the 296 Speciale is equipped with an upgraded 3.0-liter V6 plug-in hybrid system. The engine utilizes titanium connecting rods, and both the crankshaft and turbocharger have been made lighter. The electric motor has also received enhancements, bringing the total power up to an impressive 880 horsepower.

It is paired with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, allowing the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, with a top speed reaching 335 km/h.

Aerodynamically, the new model features the introduction of a "pneumatic damper" design, which directs airflow from the front of the vehicle underneath to flow past the engine cover and over the windshield, enhancing high-speed stability.

The front includes ventilation reliefs, while the rear effectively disperses airflow from the rear wheels through a unique batwing structure. These designs work in tandem with an active rear wing system.

To reduce weight, the 296 Speciale incorporates carbon fiber for components such as the wheels, bumpers, and engine cover, while many parts like suspension springs and the exhaust system are made from titanium. By reducing the weight of the engine block and oil pan, as well as decreasing the turbo weight by 1.2 kilograms, the final vehicle weight stands at just 1,410 kg.

As for delivery timelines, the hardtop version of the 296 Speciale is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2026, while the convertible version is set to launch in the second quarter of 2026.

In terms of pricing, the 296 Speciale is priced at €407,000 (approximately RM 1,996,335) in the Italian market, while the convertible variant is set at €462,000 (RM 2,265,110), placing it in the mid-to-high price range of Ferrari’s product lineup.
