Lithium Titanate Battery: A Promising Option for Long-Life Applications
JamesFeb 23, 2024, 09:25 PM
Lithium titanate battery is a kind of lithium ion battery negative material - lithium titanate, which can form a 2.4V or 1.9V lithium ion secondary battery with lithium manganate, ternary materials, or lithium iron phosphate as a positive electrode material. In addition, it can also be used as a positive electrode and forms a 1.5V lithium secondary battery with lithium metal or lithium alloy negative electrode. It is characterized by high safety, high stability, long life, and environmental friendliness.
Composition of Lithium Titanate Battery
Positive electrode: Lithium iron phosphate, Lithium manganate, or Ternary materials, Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide.
Negative electrode: Lithium titanate material.
Separator: Separator for lithium battery with carbon as negative electrode.
Electrolyte: Electrolyte for lithium battery with carbon as negative electrode.
Battery casing: Casing for lithium battery with carbon as negative electrode.
Characteristics of Lithium Titanate Battery
Lithium Titanate (LTO) material is used as a negative electrode material in batteries. Due to its inherent characteristics, it is easy for the material to interact with the electrolyte and generate gas precipitation during the charge and discharge cycle, causing common lithium titanate batteries to easily inflate, leading to cell bulging, and a significant decrease in electrical performance, greatly reducing the theoretical cycle life of lithium titanate batteries. Test data shows that common lithium titanate batteries will inflate after about 1,500-2,000 cycles, resulting in them not being able to be used normally, which is an important reason that limits the large-scale application of lithium titanate batteries.
The improvement of Lithium Titanate (LTO) battery performance is a comprehensive reflection of the enhancement of the performance of individual materials and the organic integration of key materials. In response to the requirements for quick charging and long service life, in addition to negative electrode materials, it is necessary to target other key raw materials of lithium-ion batteries (including positive electrode material, separator, and electrolyte), in conjunction with special engineering process experience, to finally form a "non-inflating" lithium titanate LpTO battery product and first to achieve batch use in electric buses.
Test data shows that under the conditions of 6C charging, 6C discharging, 100%DOD, the cycle life of lithium titanate LpTO single cell battery exceeds 25,000 times, the remaining capacity exceeds 80%, and the gas production phenomenon of the battery core is not obvious and does not affect its lifespan. The actual application situation of Chongqing's fast-charging pure electric buses also shows that after the batteries are combined, the performance of the electrical properties is also very excellent, ensuring the daily commercial operation of pure electric buses.
