Porsche Teases Road-Going 963 for June Debut: A Reborn 917 Legend

【PCauto】Porsche has recently released a series of cryptic teaser images, hinting at the launch of a street-legal version of its Le Mans-winning 963 race car in June 2025.

This marks Porsche's first transformation of a top-tier endurance racer into a road-going model after half of a century, since the legendary 1973 917 road version .

The upcoming 963 street version is expected to be equipped with a mid-mounted 4.6L V8 engine paired with a hybrid system, with combined output potentially exceeding 800 horsepower.
The powertrain retains the twin-turbo V8 architecture of the race version but adopts several adaptations for road use and regulatory compliance.

The race-spec air compressor system has been removed, and the hybrid system's output has been reduced to meet Euro 7 emissions standards. However, Porsche has maintained the pure rear-wheel-drive layout, making it different from the all-wheel-drive race variant.

In terms of weight reduction, Porsche has controlled the weight of 963 road version at 1,350kg - a 15% increase over the race car but still an excellent figure for supercar lightweighting.
Key innovations include 3D-printed titanium suspension components that reduce weight while improving strength and durability, along with optional magnesium alloy wheels that are reduced by 8.7kg per wheel, significantly reducing the car's unsprung mass and enhancing its handling agility.

The adjustable rear wing is a highlight of the aerodynamic design of the 963 road version. When driving at high speeds, the rear wing can automatically retract to reduce air resistance and improve top speed performance. In situations where downforce is needed, such as high-speed cornering, the rear wing can open timely to enhance vehicle stability.
Porsche engineers, while satisfying street driving regulations, carefully tuned the rear diffuser, ensuring its downforce effect without creating inconvenience for daily driving. It is revealed that the 963 road version retains 75% of the downforce effect of the racetrack version, providing strong road grip during high-speed driving and intense driving, ensuring the driving stability under various road conditions.

Looking back at Porsche's racing history, the 1973 917 road version can be described as a masterpiece. The 917 K road version at that time was equipped with a 4.9L V12 naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 660 horsepower, with 0-100km/h acceleration only taking 3.1 seconds, and the top speed reaching up to 386km/h, but only 1 unit was produced.

Today's 963 highway version has achieved comprehensive evolution in terms of technology and performance. With a combination of 4.6L V8 twin-turbo with hybrid power, its maximum power is expected to reach 820 horsepower, and 0-100km/h acceleration is expected to be reduced to 2.3 seconds. Although the top speed is controlled at 350km/h due to electronic speed limit, the overall performance of 963 highway version is stronger. Moreover, the sales strategy of limited 75 units also improves its collection value.

From the 917 to the 963, across half a century, Porsche has consistently pursued the outstanding automobile performance, transforming racing performance into excellent road-going performance.

The target customer group of Porsche 963 version is very clear: existing 918 Spyder owners will have prioritized purchasing rights, who have a deep loyalty and unique pursuit for Porsche's top supercar.
At the same time, collectors of Porsche racing history are also the main target, as the deep racing culture and historical heritage carried by this car are extremely attractive to the collectors.

In addition, ultra-high net worth clients in the Middle East and North America have always favored top supercars. The 963 Road Version, with its excellent performance and limited edition, will become their perfect choice to demonstrate their status and taste.
From an investment and collection perspective, the 963 Road Version shows great potential. According to data from RM Sotheby's, similar limited edition race cars are expected to have a basic preservation rate of 25% to 35% within 3 years. If the track version is purchased together, the preservation rate is expected to rise to 50% to 70%.

The introduction of the 963 Road Version by Porsche has a profound impact on the automobile industry. It represents the extreme test of downgrading top-level race technology, applying Le Mans champion race car technology to road models, providing a new idea for high-performance car research and development in the auto industry.
