Proton Persona will be discontinued in 2026, with total sales exceeding 450,000 units

【PCauto】The Proton Persona, once marketed with the core selling points of being 'practical, durable, and easy to maintain', is now nearing the end of its lifecycle.
According to various sources and Proton's future product plans revealed during its Tech Showcase, the Persona name is absent from platform strategies, engine layouts, or future model series, effectively confirming its discontinuation in 2026.
For a national sedan that debuted in 2007, spanning three generations and achieving total sales exceeding 450,000 units, this marks the end of an era.

The first-generation Persona was launched in 2007
At the time, B-Segment sedans were still a core need for many Malaysian families purchasing cars, and Persona successfully tapped into the mass market with a combination of a spacious rear seating area, practical trunk space, low maintenance costs, and sufficient spare parts supply.
In that era, whether for a young graduate entering the workforce, newlyweds starting a family, or small businesses needing reliable transport, the Persona was almost invariably the budget-friendly and dependable choice.
The Persona's longevity over the years was no coincidence
Proton consistently ensured the model adhered to a product strategy centered on being 'reliable, easy to maintain, and supported by widely available spare parts'. Proton even made ongoing technical refinements over time, such as tuning the transmission logic, optimizing the output of the Campro VVT engine, enhancing body structural rigidity, and incorporating more comprehensive safety features.
Although it underwent no large-scale platform change, the overall driving quality and sense of refinement became far more robust compared to earlier versions, allowing the Persona to consistently maintain stable market performance.

The Persona of 2016 Brings Significant Changes
The current-generation Persona, launched in 2016, marked a critical turning point for the model lineup. After Proton began collaborating with Geely, the overall R&D process and quality standards of the brand saw significant improvements.
Although the Persona did not adopt an entirely new powertrain like the X70, X50, or S70, its exterior quality, safety features, and assembly standards became much more mature compared to before.
The 2019 and 2021 updates continued to add features consumers desired, such as more efficient tuning, a more comfortable driving experience, and a more modern interior design.
Even during the post-pandemic market recovery, the Persona's sales remained stable, cementing its status as the most enduringly popular model in Proton's sedan lineup.

The Persona Can No Longer Meet Current Market Demands
However, the market is changing. The rise of SUVs, coupled with growing consumer demand for ADAS, connectivity systems, and more advanced platforms, has gradually diminished the appeal of traditional B-segment sedans.
Furthermore, Proton has clearly stated that it will replace all Campro platforms and older-generation powertrains with the Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) and the new i-GT engine family.
As the Persona shares the same 1.6L Campro VVT engine and chassis with the discontinued Iriz, its technical foundation makes entering a new product cycle difficult.

Judging from Proton's showcased product strategy, the Persona is no longer part of any future plans: it is absent from the AMA platform lineup, the future roadmap of the X/S series, the GMA technology strategy, and the i-GT powertrain is set to replace the entire Campro series by 2026.
These signals indicate that the scope for updating the Persona has been overtaken by the rapid pace of technological advancement, making a further lifecycle extension unfeasible.
Who will fill the gap left by Persona?
The Persona's departure will leave a significant gap in Proton's product lineup, specifically in the price segment between the Saga and the S70.
Currently, there is approximately a RM25,000 difference between the top-range Saga and the entry-level S70, sparking market rumors about a cheaper version of the S70. This variant, reportedly equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine and a torque-converter CVT, would fill the void left by the Persona.
This combination mirrors the powertrain used in the overseas Geely Emgrand and aligns with Proton's strategy to cover diverse consumer segments.

Proton will continue to provide full parts support for the Persona
As for Persona owners, they need not worry about issues arising from the model's discontinuation. Proton boasts the most comprehensive parts supply network nationwide, and with the large number of Personas on the road, parts and maintenance services will remain readily available.

Over the past two decades, whether as a university student's first car, a partner for family school runs, or a workhorse for corporate light fleets, the Persona has humbly yet seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of Malaysians.
It was never the most striking, luxurious, or technologically advanced model in the market, but it proved to be the most stable, durable, and capable companion for the long journeys of its users.

Perodua Myvi and Bezza may undergo major upgrades in 2026
After the update, the Bezza will no longer be just a low-cost alternative but a core model in the Perodua system with greater market competitiveness and brand premium potential. The upgrade of the Myvi is not to be unconventional but to strengthen the brand and market, ensuring that the Myvi continues to maintain its irreplaceable position in the new round of product competition.

Perodua Traz VS Ativa, which one is more worth buying?
Traz, as a newly launched mid-sized SUV, offers more spacious room and mainstream power compared to small SUVs, but its pricing appears slightly higher than that of Ativa. Ativa, on the other hand, is Perodua's long-time best-selling small SUV with more affordable pricing and a balanced combination of power and tech features.

Will the Toyota Yaris Cross come to Malaysia? If it comes, how much will it sell for?
The launch of Perodua Traz indicates that the market size of small SUVs in Malaysia has been expanding in recent years. However, the question naturally shifts back to Toyota. As a brand with the most comprehensive product line and a strong foundation in both the SUV and hybrid sectors, will Toyota choose the Yaris Cross to participate in this small SUV competition?

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?
Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.

Why is the Toyota Sienna so popular with so many people?
In Malaysia, most family MPVs choose Toyota Alphard, Vellfire, or Kia Carnival. These models each have their advantages in luxury, space, or brand influence, but models that truly balance large space, multifunctional practicality, fuel efficiency, and reliability are rarely seen.
