Rumors suggest that the New Model Y will add a 7-seater version, but the third row of seats is not very useful

【PCauto】There have been speculations regarding the forthcoming seven-seat variant of Model Y, a topic that has garnered extensive discussion across various media platforms. However, I contend that it would be more prudent to temper expectations regarding this allegedly seven-seat Model Y.

Reflecting on the previous seven-seat Model Y marketed in both European and American contexts, the experience proved to be quite unsatisfactory. Both the new and older iterations of Model Y feature a wheelbase of 2890 mm, and the inherent spatial configuration presents considerable challenges in accommodating an additional row of seating. Adults seated in the third row endure a particularly distressing experience—legroom is drastically insufficient, resulting in knees that nearly touch the front seats; headroom is also severely limited, and individuals of even modest height often find their heads uncomfortably pressed against the vehicle's roof. This sensation of confinement contributes to an ordeal that few would wish to encounter repeatedly. Imagine a family embarking on a road trip with adults contorted uncomfortably in the third row. By the time they reach their destination, they may arrive feeling thoroughly exhausted.

From a child safety perspective, accommodating very young children in the third row presents additional concerns. On one hand, it is challenging for adults to effectively attend to a child's needs while constrained in the uncomfortable third row during travel. On the other hand, in the event of a vehicular collision, the proximity of the third-row seats to the rear bumper means that they absorb greater impact during a rear-end accident, thereby escalating the risk significantly. It is unlikely that many parents would be inclined to place their children in such a vulnerable position.

If a genuine demand for a seven-seater exists, there are numerous more suitable alternatives readily available in the marketplace, including Mitsubishi Xpander, Honda CR-V. Therefore, it is judicious to approach the rumored seven-seat Model Y with a measured and rational perspective.
