As a member of the B-segment sedan market in Malaysia, Proton Persona is favored by consumers for its outstanding cost performance and reliable performance. The redesigned and improved 2022 Proton Persona offers consumers more choices and a better experience.

The 2022 Proton Persona offers three main versions in the Malaysian market: Standard, Executive, and Premium. All versions are equipped with a 1.6L natural aspiration four-cylinder engine and standard continuously variable transmission (CVT), and manual transmission has been cancelled. Prices are as follows:

- Standard price: RM 47,800

- Executive price: RM 53,300

- Premium price: RM 58,300

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the 2022 Proton Persona has been meticulously adjusted to make it more modern and fashionable. The front face adopts Proton's signature “Infinite Weave” grille design, with a new round logo embedded in the center, which first debuted on the Proton X70. The Premium is also equipped with LED headlights and a black roof to enhance the luxury of the whole car. Body size LWH is: 4,366×1,722×1,564mm, wheelbase is 2,555mm.

The Standard is equipped with 15-inch wheels, while the Executive and Premium have been upgraded to 16-inch wheels. The 16-inch wheels of the Premium are designed in two colors, which brings a better visual effect. A new "Space Grey" color learned from the Proton X70 has been added to the body color, making the overall appearance more diverse and personalized.

Interior Design

In terms of the interior, the 2022 Proton Persona has been upgraded in many places that shows a more modern and practical overall style. The center console adopts a floating design and is equipped with an 8-inch touch screen information entertainment system. Only Premium supports advanced voice command system, which can control air conditioning and electric windows.

The seats for Standard and Executive are made of black fabric material, while Premium is upgraded to brown leather seats, which further enhance the luxury and comfort of the interior. In addition, all versions come standard with a digital air conditioning control system, and Premium also adds a central armrest and 6 USB ports to provide more convenience for passengers.

Power System

The 2022 Proton Persona is equipped with a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with a maximum power of 109 horsepower and peak torque of 150 Nm. In terms of transmission system, all models come standard with a CVT transmission and the previous 5-speed manual transmission has been cancelled.

This combination of engine and CVT transmission provides a smooth driving experience and relatively excellent fuel economy, which is suitable for daily commuting in the city and long-distance driving.

Safety Configuration

The 2022 Proton Persona has also been upgraded in terms of safety configuration. All models come standard with 4 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock braking system (ABS) and ISOFIX child seat interface. And Premium adds side airbags and head air curtains for a total of 6 airbags.

In addition, the Executive and Premium models are equipped with a reversing camera to enhance safety during parking and reversing.

However, it is worth noting that the 2022 Proton Persona still does not come with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). This is a slight disadvantage when compared to competitors such as Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Nissan Almera.

Infotainment System

The Premium model comes with an 8-inch touch screen infotainment system that supports Bluetooth connection. Unfortunately, it still does not support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which might influence the buying decisions of some consumers in this era of widespread smartphone usage.

All variants come standard with a digital air conditioning control system and are equipped with N95 air filters to improve the air quality inside the car. The Premium model also offers leather seats, a center armrest, and 6 USB ports, which offers a more comfortable and convenient ride for both the driver and passengers.

Conclusion

In the B-segment sedan market, main competitors of the 2022 Proton Persona include Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Nissan Almera. Compared to these rivals, the Proton Persona has a clear price advantage, but there's still room for improvement in terms of its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and intelligent infotainment system.

If you value cost-effectiveness and practicality, the Standard (RM 45,200) and Executive (RM 50,100) models are good choices. The Standard model comes with basic safety features and lower maintenance costs, whereas the Executive model comes with a reversing camera and additional comfort features. If luxury and comfort are your priorities, the Premium model (RM 54,900) is an excellent choice as it comes fully equipped with safety features, LED headlights, and premium leather seats.

Through multiple upgrades, the 2022 Proton Persona  has further enhanced its competitiveness in the B-segment sedan market. Whether it's exterior design, interior configuration, or power performance, all demonstrate Proton's attention to detail and response to consumer demand. Although there is still room for improvement in some areas, its outstanding cost performance and practicality make the Proton Persona an ideal choice for many car buyers. If you are considering buying a family sedan that combines performance and economy, the 2022 Proton Persona is undoubtedly a good choice.
