The fifth-generation Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero may return in 2026

【PCauto】Looking back at Mitsubishi's vehicle lineup strategy over the past decade or so, a notable evolution is evident: the brand has grown more rational, restrained, and family-oriented. From the ASX and Xforce to the PHEV-powered Outlander, the product line follows a clear logic, yet it has consistently lacked a model that truly embodies Mitsubishi's heritage.
For this reason, Takao Kato confirmed at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 that Mitsubishi will launch a full-size hardcore off-road SUV, instantly evoking the image of the legendary Pajero.

The term "full-size" indicates that it is neither an extension of the Outlander nor a crossover meant for light urban exploration, but an authentic hardcore SUV engineered with a focus on body structure, payload capacity, and off-road performance.
In terms of design direction, the new model marks a clear return to a utilitarian focus. The boxy, upright body proportions emphasise structure over flowing lines.
The simple yet robust front-end design minimises decorative elements while enhancing protection and off-road capability. Judging from spy shots and preview information, the reserved mounting points or interface near the C-pillar serve not as a stylistic gimmick but as a practical feature for long-term outdoor use.

The new model is expected to share the core architecture of Nissan's rugged SUV platform. However, it should be emphasised that this does not equate to a mere rebadging exercise. Mitsubishi will focus on differentiation in areas such as all-wheel drive and vehicle tuning, for instance by continuing to retain the S-AWC system.
Regarding powertrain options, there has been much external speculation, and Mitsubishi evidently does not intend to rely on a single solution.
On one hand, traditional internal combustion engines remain the most familiar and easily accepted choice for rugged SUV users. On the other hand, plug-in hybrid technology represents an avenue that Mitsubishi not only cannot avoid but is actively embracing and enhancing.
For the next generation of full-size rugged SUVs in terms of power, it is highly likely that they will directly adopt Nissan's current flagship V6 powertrain, specifically the VR35DDTT 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine.
This engine has already been used in the new generation Nissan Patrol (Armada) and Infiniti QX80. It was originally developed to replace the older 5.6L V8 engine and represents a product of its time.
This engine delivers a maximum power output ranging from 425 to 450 hp, with a peak torque of approximately 700 Nm. More importantly, it has already completed mass production validation and complies with emission standards in key markets.
For Mitsubishi, adopting this proven powertrain not only mitigates development risks significantly but also positions the new vehicle squarely within the core market where the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and Nissan Patrol are positioned.

Centred on the 2.4T engine and dual-motor PHEV system, this represents a core technological asset that Mitsubishi has continually invested in and refined over the years, particularly in models such as the Outlander.
In the context of a hardcore SUV, the significance of this system is not limited to reducing fuel consumption or meeting regulations, but rather the instant torque response and precise control capabilities provided by the motor during low-speed off-roading. This concept of electrified off-road capability is emerging as a significant trend for hardcore SUVs in the era of electrification.

To avoid confusion, it should be noted that Mitsubishi is not developing only this one hardcore model. An off-road-oriented version based on the Outlander is also planned to debut around 2026, but the starting points for the two are entirely different.
The off-road version of the Outlander is aimed at light outdoor and daily use scenarios, whereas this full-size SUV is engineered for users with explicit demands for high passability and long-term durability.
Finally, Thailand remains the most logical production base for the new Pajero. Its extensive experience in manufacturing pickup trucks and SUVs, combined with a well-established export system, forms a set of advantages that are difficult for other manufacturing bases to replicate.
If the current momentum is sustained, the new Pajero is slated for its global debut in mid-2026, with mass production commencing by year-end and a subsequent gradual rollout into regional markets—all according to a well-defined timeline.

Perodua Traz VS Ativa, which one is more worth buying?
Traz, as a newly launched mid-sized SUV, offers more spacious room and mainstream power compared to small SUVs, but its pricing appears slightly higher than that of Ativa. Ativa, on the other hand, is Perodua's long-time best-selling small SUV with more affordable pricing and a balanced combination of power and tech features.

Perodua Myvi and Bezza may undergo major upgrades in 2026
After the update, the Bezza will no longer be just a low-cost alternative but a core model in the Perodua system with greater market competitiveness and brand premium potential. The upgrade of the Myvi is not to be unconventional but to strengthen the brand and market, ensuring that the Myvi continues to maintain its irreplaceable position in the new round of product competition.

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?
Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.

Will the Toyota Yaris Cross come to Malaysia? If it comes, how much will it sell for?
The launch of Perodua Traz indicates that the market size of small SUVs in Malaysia has been expanding in recent years. However, the question naturally shifts back to Toyota. As a brand with the most comprehensive product line and a strong foundation in both the SUV and hybrid sectors, will Toyota choose the Yaris Cross to participate in this small SUV competition?

Why is the Toyota Sienna so popular with so many people?
In Malaysia, most family MPVs choose Toyota Alphard, Vellfire, or Kia Carnival. These models each have their advantages in luxury, space, or brand influence, but models that truly balance large space, multifunctional practicality, fuel efficiency, and reliability are rarely seen.
