Proton Narrows the Gap with BYD as e.MAS 7 Leads Significant Registration Numbers
RobertMar 18, 2025, 11:02 AM
【PCauto】Since its launch, the e.MAS 7 has attracted over 4,500 orders. In February, Proton delivered 580 units of the e.MAS 7, bringing its total deliveries to over 1,000 vehicles. In contrast, BYD's five electric vehicle models collectively sold a total of 634 units in Malaysia. With just the e.MAS 7, Proton has nearly matched the total sales level of BYD's five models.
Furthermore, the e.MAS 7 shows an upward trend in registrations. It recorded 421 registrations in January, which jumped to 580 in February, making it the best-selling electric vehicle in Malaysia. This places it well ahead of the second best-seller, the BYD Sealion 7, which registered 387 units.
However, despite facing challenges in Europe and North America, Tesla's Model 3 saw a surge in registrations in Malaysia. The number rose from a mere 3 units in January to 377 units in February (this fluctuation may be attributed to a concentrated delivery schedule).
In terms of total brand registration rankings, BYD remains in first place, while Proton has climbed to second over the last two months, and Tesla has rebounded to third. However, while some brands have risen, others have fallen; both BMW and Zeekr saw notable declines in February.
Overall, Proton and BYD are currently the most active brands, drawing significant attention to their competitive dynamics. The gap between Proton and BYD continues to narrow, with the Proton e.MAS 7 standing out as a market focal point due to its leading registration figures.
BYD once held a significant position in the Malaysian electric vehicle market thanks to its advanced battery technology and diverse product lineup. However, the launch of the Proton e.MAS 7 has led to a notable shift in market dynamics. The e.MAS 7's outstanding performance can be attributed to its inherent product advantages.
The e.MAS 7 embodies Proton's commitment to high cost-effectiveness, featuring a modern and dynamic design. With 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, and a panoramic sunroof, the vehicle combines practicality for daily driving with an appealing visual experience for drivers. Its powertrain features an efficient electric motor with a maximum output of 120 kW (215 hp) and peak torque of 320 Nm, allowing for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of approximately 7 seconds—sufficiently powerful to handle urban traffic and highway driving. In terms of battery options, the e.MAS 7 offers both 49.25 kWh and 60.22 kWh lithium batteries, with official figures indicating a WLTP range of 345 km and 435 km on a single charge, respectively.
The competition between Proton and BYD in the Malaysian electric vehicle market is beneficial for consumers. This rivalry encourages both brands to continually improve product quality and service levels, launching more cost-effective models that will advance the healthy growth of the Malaysian electric vehicle market, thereby bringing convenience and environmental benefits to more consumers. It remains to be seen how the competitive landscape of Malaysia's electric vehicle market will evolve, making it a topic worth continued attention.
