[PCauto] On August 26, 2025, the Tochigi Plant in Japan witnessed the roll-off ceremony of the final Nissan R35 GT-R, marking the official conclusion of this legendary sports car’s 18-year production cycle.
This final model, a Premium edition T-Spec version in Midnight Purple paint, will be delivered to a local owner in Japan.
Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa attended the event and emphasized that the end of the R35 GT-R does not signify the end of the brand's performance spirit, but rather the beginning of a new era.
Nissan R35 GT-R is a symbol of Japanese performance cars
Since its debut in 2007, the Nissan R35 GT-R has become a symbol of Japanese performance cars, with a global production total of approximately 48,000 units.
Powered by the VR38DETT twin-turbocharged V6 engine, its output increased from the initial 480 horsepower to 600 horsepower in the later NISMO versions, showcasing Nissan's continuous advancements in powertrain technology.
All engines were handcrafted by “Takumi” masters at the Yokohama Plant and were affixed with a signature plaque.
The R35 GT-R's Record-Breaking Achievements on the Track
In 2007, the R35 GT-R set an initial record of 7 minutes and 38 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Through continuous optimization, it improved its time to 7 minutes and 8.679 seconds with the NISMO version in 2013, surpassing many European competitors.
In 2024, the R35 GT-R further demonstrated its advantage on short circuits by setting a new production car lap record of 59.078 seconds on the Tsukuba Circuit.
Additionally, in 2016, it set the Guinness World Record for the "Fastest Drift" at a speed of 304.96 km/h. These achievements not only demonstrate its engineering excellence but also drive the development of the global performance car market.
The Decision to Discontinue Production Stems Mainly from Strict Environmental Regulations and Cost Pressures
Japan's 2025 new regulations require all new cars to be equipped with automatic braking systems, which the R35 GT-R lacks, making it impossible to meet domestic market requirements. Meanwhile, EU emission standards and noise regulations (such as the 74-decibel limit) forced the model to withdraw early from overseas markets.
Nissan is advancing its "Re:Nissan" restructuring plan, which includes closing seven factories and laying off 20,000 workers to focus on developing electric vehicles.
Due to high production costs and relatively low sales, the R35 GT-R was marginalized during this transition, but its legacy is still regarded as a core asset of the Nissan brand.
The Next-Generation GT-R Model May Feature a Hybrid Powertrain
For the future, Nissan has hinted that the next-generation GT-R model may adopt a hybrid powertrain to continue its performance tradition.
The Hyper Force Concept, unveiled at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, is regarded as a potential prototype. It is equipped with a pure electric drive system delivering up to 1,341 horsepower, along with solid-state batteries and e-4ORCE all-wheel drive technology.
Although Nissan has not formally confirmed the specific powertrain or launch time for the R36, CEO Ivan Espinosa emphasized that the GT-R nameplate will continue to exist and is expected to return in a more advanced form after 2030.
The End of an Era: The Farewell of the R35 GT-R
The global automotive community has reacted strongly to the discontinuation of the R35 GT-R, with many expressing nostalgia on social media, calling it the end of an era.
As a symbol of Japanese automotive engineering, the R35 GT-R has not only claimed multiple championships in events like the Super GT series and the Bathurst 12 Hour Endurance Race but also appeared in cultural staples like the "Fast & Furious" film franchise, deepening its cultural impact.
Fans are eager for the next-generation model to inherit the spirit of the R35 while adapting to the environmental demands of the modern era. Nissan's response indicates the company is committed to preserving the GT-R’s performance DNA, despite the challenges that lie ahead.
The retirement of the Nissan R35 GT-R marks not only the curtain call for peak performance in the fuel combustion era but also the beginning of a new chapter in the age of electrification.
Its 18-year production span witnessed the evolution of automotive technology, from the craftsmanship of hand assembly to its glory on the racetrack. The R35 GT-R has left an indelible mark on the global performance car market.
As Nissan transitions toward electrification, the future return of the GT-R will depend on technological breakthroughs and market strategy. However, there is no doubt that the GT-R’s legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of automotive enthusiasts.
