【PCauto】MG will officially launch its all-new D-Segment pure electric SUV - the MG S5 EV - on May 20, 2025.

The vehicle has previously been showcased at the Malaysia Autoshow and during media preview events organized by MG Motor Malaysia. The MG S5 EV measures 4,476mm in length, 1,849mm in width, 1,621mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,730mm.

According to reports, the pre-sale price of the MG S5 EV starts from RM115,000. Since reservations opened on May 8, customers only need to pay a RM500 booking fee to buy it. MG Malaysia announced through social media that the official launch event will take place on May 20 at Mid Valley Megamall, where the new model will be displayed at the center court until May 25.

Additionally, early birds can enjoy attractive promotions including "10 times more benefits" and a complimentary 7kW wallbox charger.

The MG S5 EV will face strong competition from both domestic and international rivals, including the Proton e.Mas 7 and BYD Atto 3.

Although its pre-sale price is higher than the Proton e.Mas 7, the MG S5 EV still offers several advantages. In terms of powertrain configuration, the MG S5 EV continues to utilize the rear-wheel-drive platform of the previous-generation MG4 EV, offering two power variants with 170hp and 245hp, while the Proton e.Mas 7 currently only provides a single 218hp version. In addition, the MG S5 EV is equipped with an advanced suspension configuration with front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension.

For battery range, MG S5 EV is equipped with 49.1kWh or 62.2kWh lithium battery packs, delivering pure electric ranges between 425km to 525km, while the Proton e.Mas 7 delivers the maximum range of 470km. Media tests have confirmed its DC fast-charging capability reaches up to 140kW, ranking among the top in the vehicles with same price.

In terms of interior space design, the standard volume of the trunk of the MG S5 EV is 462 liters, and the expanded volume can reach 1423 liters, which is on par with the Proton e.Mas 7. However, the MG S5 EV has a multi-layer partition function, which greatly improves the practicality of space, whether it is daily shopping trips or long-distance travel luggage, it can cope with ease.

Proton e.Mas 7 and BYD Atto 3 are showing quite strong performances in the market. Although MG S5 EV has some advantages, it is obviously behind in terms of brand. However, what is interesting is that the MG S5 EV uses rear wheel drive, which can make the front and rear weight distribution of the MG S5 EV closer to 50:50, resulting in better control stability and balance.

As for the evaluation of the MG S5 EV, it can be said that it is a niche model with driving fun. If you value the driving experience, then the MG S5 EV is a good choice.
