The next-generation Mazda CX-5 details emerge: Brand new Skyactiv-Z engine, Independently developed hybrid system

[PCauto] As the absolute sales anchor of Mazda on a global scale, every update of the CX-5 tugs at the hearts of countless consumers.
While Mazda's recent spotlight has been on its larger rear-wheel drive platform models like the CX-60 and CX-90, the true cornerstone supporting this Hiroshima-based manufacturer remains this mid-size SUV.
Details about the next-generation CX-5 have been surfacing thick and fast lately, and aside from the long-rumored new Skyactiv-Z engine, the much-anticipated hybrid system has finally come into view.
Skyactiv-Z: The Last Stand of the Internal Combustion Engine
Mazda has officially confirmed that it is developing a new four-cylinder engine called Skyactiv-Z, which is scheduled to debut around 2027, replacing the existing Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X.
Unlike previous attempts at ultra-lean burn, the core goal of Skyactiv-Z is to achieve Lambda 1 (theoretical air-fuel ratio) combustion across the full RPM range.
By precisely controlling the air-fuel ratio to the ideal state of 14.7:1, combined with extremely high thermal efficiency, this engine aims to achieve a better balance of emissions.
This is not only to meet Euro 7 and US EPA emission standards but also Mazda's way of preserving the last dignity of internal combustion engines amidst the wave of electrification.

The Hybrid System No Longer Relies on Toyota's Technology
Previously, the market speculated that since the North American CX-50 had adopted Toyota's THS hybrid system, the next-generation CX-5 would likely just borrow the RAV4's powertrain outright.
However, the latest news reveals that Mazda plans to equip the next-generation CX-5 with its self-developed hybrid system. While Toyota's hybrid technology is highly advanced, its tuning focuses more on practicality and smoothness.
Choosing self-development means that Mazda is attempting to achieve energy efficiency while preserving precise throttle response and its unique mechanical feel.
More importantly, this also dispels the rumors that the "new CX-5 will become a rebadged Toyota"—whether in terms of core powertrain or the iconic Kodo interior craftsmanship, Mazda will maintain its independence and its path towards luxury sophistication.
How much will the new CX-5 cost?
Considering the investment in Skyactiv-Z development and the cost of the self-developed hybrid system, the pricing of the new vehicle is highly likely to increase.
If it arrives in Southeast Asia around 2027, the expected prices will be as follows:
Starting price: 150,000 MYR
Hybrid version price: 210,000 MYR

As a "technology fanatic", Mazda is a brand you both love and hate. In the highly homogenized SUV market, this kind of unconventional character makes the CX-5 not just a commuting tool but also a partner that brings joy to the driver.
We look forward to the Skyactiv-Z launching on schedule in 2027, proving that in the era of electrification, the art of pure internal combustion engines still has its place.
