Mazda CX-5 cumulative sales reach 5 million, the next generation will use hybrid power

[PCauto] According to an official release from Mazda, the global cumulative sales of the Mazda CX-5 have surpassed five million units. Launched in 2011, the first-generation CX-5 was not only the pioneering model to fully embody Mazda's Skyactiv technology and Kodo design language but has also evolved into the brand's most stable global revenue stream.
As of the end of 2025, the CX-5 became the third model in Mazda’s history to reach the 5-million-unit sales milestone, following the Mazda 323 (Familia) and the Mazda 3 (Axela). Unlike its predecessors, however, the CX-5’s success stems not from a boom in a single market but from consistent, long-term performance across more than 100 countries and regions.
Since 2018, it has remained Mazda’s best-selling single model globally for several consecutive years, accounting for approximately one-third of the brand’s annual sales—a rare feat in today’s highly fragmented automotive market.

This very stability is why the CX-5 is often described as an uncontroversial car. It does not attract attention with flashy design, nor does it chase top specs. Most of the time, it serves as a reliable long-term companion.
This is precisely why it became the fastest model within the Skyactiv lineup to reach five million sales. Its achievement stems not from radical features, but from the absence of obvious flaws.

However, this also points to its weakness. The second-generation CX-5’s shortcomings in its later lifecycle are not related to its powertrain or chassis, but rather to its interior space and intelligent features, which have gradually fallen behind the times.
Mazda is clearly aware of this. The third-generation CX-5, unveiled in July 2025, directly addresses these long-discussed issues.

From revised exterior proportions to a longer wheelbase, the updates to the third-generation model, while not radical, clearly steer it toward a more refined direction. Its visual style draws cues from the CX-60, signaling a move away from pandering to the youth market and instead reinforcing its family-oriented, mid-to-high-end positioning.
The integration of the Google ecosystem into the cabin marks a rare proactive step by Mazda in terms of smart features. However, this minimalist approach, which eliminates the physical volume knob, may require some adaptation for long-time users.

Upon the five-million-unit sales milestone, Mazda confirmed that the new-generation CX-5 will feature an in-house developed hybrid system, rather than adopting Toyota’s THS directly.
This choice involves significant risk, but the strategic intent is clear: Mazda does not wish to completely cede technical sovereignty amid the electrification wave.
The new-generation CX-5 is expected to combine a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor. This setup aims not at breaking fuel efficiency records, but at striking a balance between meeting emission regulations and preserving driving enjoyment.

Meanwhile, the Skyactiv-Z engine, projected to launch around 2027, suggests that the CX-5 will continue to be an important platform for Mazda’s technological experimentation in the coming years. This is not a model that will bow out after completing its mission, but rather a long-term project in which Mazda is heavily invested.
Based on the current timeline, production of the existing CX-5 is expected to cease in March 2026, with the production line then transitioning fully to the third-generation model.
For Mazda, the 5-million-unit mark is both a milestone and a point of pressure. The CX-5 has proven that the brand is not solely for a niche audience. Whether the third-generation model can sustain this success, however, remains a question for the market to answer.
What is certain is that the CX-5 is no longer just Mazda’s best-selling SUV, but a crucial cornerstone shaping the brand’s future direction.
