The Next-Generation Mazda MX-5 will Focus on Reducing Weight, Aiming to Come in under 1,000 kg

[PCauto] Shortly after the launch of the New Mazda MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition, Masashi Nakayama, General Manager of Mazda’s Design Department, discussed the design direction for the next-generation MX-5. One of the core objectives is to further lighten the vehicle’s body, with Mazda’s ideal weight goal set at keeping the curb weight below 1,000 kilograms.

A lightweight chassis has always been the essence of the MX-5, directly correlating to the vehicle's unparalleled driving experience. To achieve this aim, Mazda intends to utilize lighter and smaller components, ensuring that every detail is addressed so as to prevent excessive vehicle dimensions. The design plan is to maintain the overall length at under 4 meters, allowing the MX-5 to continue offering its compact and agile character on the road.

In selecting the powertrain, Mazda’s Chief Technology Officer Ryuichi Umeshita announced a significant decision: the next-generation MX-5 will feature an all-new naturally aspirated engine—Skyactiv-Z.
This 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is touted by Mazda as the “ideal internal combustion engine,” striking a perfect balance between power output and fuel efficiency, providing drivers with robust performance without making fuel consumption a burden.

At the same time, the manual transmission will be retained. For enthusiasts who crave pure driving pleasure, this is undoubtedly great news. The manual gearbox allows drivers to establish a more direct and intimate connection with the vehicle, fully enjoying the exhilarating sensations of acceleration and downshifting, making driving an immersive experience.
However, in light of the electric tide sweeping through the automotive industry, Mazda has also considered the potential for electrifying the MX-5. On the other hand, Mazda understands that electrification could significantly increase vehicle weight, contradicting the lightweight philosophy that the MX-5 embodies, and potentially undermining the agility provided by its lightweight design.

Given this, a mild hybrid system has emerged as an appealing compromise. It enhances energy efficiency while introducing only a moderate increase in weight, with the potential to embrace electrification trends while retaining the core essence of the MX-5.
As for the launch time for the next-generation MX-5, Mazda has indicated that fans will need to wait a while longer. The current ND3 generation is set to debut in 2024 and is expected to continue being sold for several years, with no immediate plans for the next-generation MX-5 to be released.
