It is reported that Toyota is developing the eighth-generation Celica sports car. Toyota's Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakadzima confirmed this news last weekend during the 2024 Japan Rally, although no further details were provided. Earlier reports indicated that the eighth-generation Celica may debut as a concept car at the 2025 Tokyo Motor Show, though it will not be the final production version.

Interestingly, Toyota also filed a trademark for the "Celica" name in November of this year, paving the way for the revival of this iconic model.
Reviving the Toyota Celica isn’t a major challenge for Toyota, as the design of the car's exterior and interior isn’t difficult for such an automotive giant. However, developing a performance engine under the strict global environmental regulations is where the difficulty lies. Reports suggest that Toyota is working on a brand-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing up to 300 kW (approximately 400 horsepower). This engine, codenamed X20, has garnered significant attention and is expected to be used in the new Toyota Celica.

First introduced in 1970, the Toyota Celica's name comes from the Spanish word "Celica," which means "heavenly, sky, divine." The Celica won the hearts of car enthusiasts worldwide with its outstanding performance and unique design, achieving great success in the WRC (World Rally Championship) during the 1990s. The Celica's design was inspired by racing cars, featuring a low body, a steeply sloped windshield, an upward-turned rear end, and distinctive body creases.

As times progressed, the Toyota Celica was discontinued in 2005. Now, with the confirmation of the Celica's revival, Toyota is set to make a comeback in the sports car market. The new-generation Celica will become a part of the GR (Gazoo Racing) family and is expected to be unveiled alongside the new GR 86.
