【PCauto】BYD will launch the Atto 2 in Europe, introducing a plug-in hybrid version named the Atto 2 DM-i.
This model is positioned as a compact plug-in hybrid SUV for the European market and is expected to thereby fill the gap between the smaller BYD Dolphin and the larger Atto 3 in its European product lineup.
The plug-in hybrid version features a redesigned front fascia, characterized by a larger grille to enhance engine cooling and a newly designed vehicle emblem.
Performance of BYD Atto 2 DM-i
The Atto 2 DM-i is equipped with a brand-new plug-in hybrid system, offering a pure electric range of about 90 kilometers and two versions with different battery capacities and power outputs.
Although the specific technical details of the engine have not been released, BYD has a limited range of engine models. Therefore, it is highly probable that a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine will be adopted.
The plug-in hybrid model is anticipated to deliver performance on par with the all-electric Atto 2. The electric Atto 2 is available in two power outputs—174 hp and 201 hp—with both variants capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

Atto 2 DM-i will become the smallest PHEV in the UK market
The dimensions of the Atto 2 DM-i are 4310×1830×1675 mm, with a wheelbase of 2620 mm. Evolving from the Yuan Up's interior design, the model's configuration will be optimized for its new market. Standard features are anticipated to comprise a 12.8-inch rotating central display, an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel, and a panoramic glass roof.
Upon its launch, the Atto 2 DM-i is set to become the smallest PHEV available in the UK market.
BYD plans to begin localized production of the Atto 2 DM-i at its Hungary plant starting in 2026. This will share production lines with models such as the Atto 3 and Seagull, a move aimed at bolstering supply chain efficiency and strengthening cost management.
In terms of market potential, the Atto 2 DM-i is expected to complement BYD's lineup of compact pure electric SUVs in Europe. The model is anticipated to leverage its cost-effectiveness and localized production to expand its market share.
Atto 2 DM-i aims to address the rapidly growing PHEV demand in Europe
Market dynamics in Europe show that plug-in hybrid vehicles are experiencing rapid growth, primarily driven by insufficient charging infrastructure.
Citing industry data, the number of public charging stations in Europe is approximately 1.05 million, only a quarter of that in China and unevenly distributed. The Netherlands, Germany, and France account for 80% of the total, while regions in Southern and Eastern Europe, such as Romania, have extremely low coverage.
Meanwhile, the insufficient proportion of fast-charging stations further compounds users' charging difficulties. The flexibility of plug-in hybrids—offering electric economy for short trips and fuel backup for long journeys—makes them a practical solution for current consumer needs. This is confirmed by a 56.3% year-on-year increase in European PHEV registrations for August 2025, far surpassing the growth in the petrol and diesel vehicle segment.
BYD's plug-in hybrid models have achieved initial success in Europe. For example, the Seal U PHEV became a best-selling PHEV model in Europe in August 2025, with sales reaching 3,892 units, surpassing key rivals in the plug-in hybrid segment.

Established European automakers face challenges in pivoting to PHEV technology. Brands like Volkswagen and Stellantis see plug-in hybrid sales accounting for less than 5% of their total volume. In contrast, BYD has established a differentiated advantage with its dedicated PHEV platform and competitive pricing. For example, the Seal DM-i is 700 euros cheaper than the Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV.
BYD Views PHEVs as a Transitional Phase to BEVs in the Market
BYD sees plug-in hybrids as the dominant force in the European market over the coming two years. In response, an expansion of its lineup with 3-4 new PHEV models is planned to target key mainstream segments.
At the same time, BYD also aims to leverage its PHEV rollout to accumulate user data and build brand recognition, thereby laying the groundwork for the future localized production of all-electric models at its Hungary factory. It also plans to launch a high-end brand named "YANGWANG" in 2027 to enter the European luxury market.
