【PCauto】The Toyota X-VNA GEAR concept car, which debuted at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, is now moving closer to mass production. According to multiple sources, this crossover model—built on the same platform as the compact minivans Noah and Voxy—could officially enter the market as early as 2025.
Sharing Toyota’s TNGA-C platform with the popular Noah and Voxy models in Japan
The X-VNA GEAR reinforces its family lineage through its dimensions:
Length: 4,695 mm
Width: 1,820 mm
Height: 1,855 mm
Wheelbase: 2,850 mm
These dimensions position the X-VNA GEAR in a newly created segment between the Corolla Cross and the RAV4. Japanese media speculate that the production model may be called “Highroad,” though it might also carry over the concept name X-VNA GEAR.

Patent images indicate that the production model stays true to the concept car’s design language. The boxy body shape, paired with sliding doors at both the front and rear, preserves the practicality of an MPV, while slim LED daytime running lights and modular headlamp units add a distinct crossover flair. One of the most notable features is the pillarless design, which allows a door opening width of up to 1.4 meters—significantly enhancing passenger accessibility.

The interior offers a highly versatile space layout.
With a three-row configuration supporting 6- to 8-seat arrangements and a completely flat floor, the cabin is designed for maximum flexibility. When the second and third rows are folded down, it creates a cargo area with a depth of over 2 meters.
Toyota engineers have placed special emphasis on multifunctionality. The seats support up to 12 different configurations, including full flat folding and reverse installation. A 230V power outlet is also available to accommodate scenarios such as camping and mobile workspaces.
The cockpit follows a horizontal layout concept and comes standard with a 10.5-inch floating central display and a fully digital instrument cluster. Physical dials are retained for air conditioning controls, while the gear selector uses an electronic button-type design. There are up to 27 storage compartments throughout the cabin, including a front center channel capable of holding a 70-liter cooler box.

Two powertrain options
The variant powered by the 2.0L Dynamic Force engine (M20A-FKS) is expected to start at around ¥3 million (approximately RM93,000).
The variant with the 1.8L hybrid system (2ZR-FXE) is anticipated to exceed ¥4 million (around RM124,000) for the top-spec trim.
Higher-spec variants will feature the E-Four electronic all-wheel-drive system, with a 40 kW motor on the rear axle to enhance performance on challenging road conditions.

Positioned as a family vehicle, with potential to attract former Innova buyers
In the Japanese market, the model will continue the family-oriented positioning of the Noah and Voxy. In Southeast Asia, however, it may partially take over the customer base of the Innova. Its main competitor is expected to be the Mitsubishi Delica D:5, with both models sharing similarities in space efficiency and rugged styling.
While Toyota has yet to announce an official launch timeline, upcoming events such as the Tokyo Motor Show and Toyota’s global press conferences are likely to serve as key release windows. As the launch approaches, this new crossover—combining MPV practicality, SUV styling, and electric vehicle technology—is set to inject fresh energy into the family car segment.
