Tesla Rolls Out Extended Model Y L with Six Seats in China

【PCauto】On July 16, Tesla introduced the new Model Y L in China. Based on the latest filing from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), this long-wheelbase version will come with six seats and is expected to hit the Chinese market in fall 2025. The pre-sale price is set at 400,000 RMB, or about 237,000 MYR.

The Model Y L sits between the current Model Y and the larger Model X. For Tesla, this new variant is a key move to stay competitive in China’s fast-changing EV market.

Model Y L Gets a Longer Body and Wheelbase

The Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, which is 179 mm longer than the standard version. Its wheelbase stretches to 3,040 mm, even longer than the 2,965 mm of the Model X. Tesla has also raised the height by 44 mm to improve headroom in the third row.

It uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that delivers a combined output of 340 kW (142 kW at the front and 198 kW at the rear). Tesla hasn’t shared the exact battery capacity yet, but says the model will feature its optimized long-range technology. Based on the current Model Y Long Range version, which offers up to 750 km under the CLTC cycle, we can expect a similar range here.

Tesla prioritizes the Chinese market

Tesla’s choice to launch the Model Y L first in China isn’t a coincidence. It’s a strategic move backed by several factors. In Q2 2025, China made up 34% of Tesla’s global sales. However, the brand’s market share in the country has slipped to 7.6%.

Local players like the Xiaomi YU7, AITO M8, and Li Auto i8 are growing fast. The Model Y L aims to fill a clear gap in the market: a six-seat luxury SUV that sits between Tesla’s existing lineup and appeals to family buyers looking for space and tech.

Tesla’s New Model Y L Is Built for Chinese Families

Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that in 2024, sales of vehicles with six or more seats in China rose by 14.53% year over year. This growth comes mainly from larger families and rising demand for business travel.

The Model Y L uses a 2+2+2 layout, with extra attention given to comfort in the second-row captain’s chairs. It also keeps Tesla’s signature front trunk, which adds 117 liters of extra storage.

Tesla also holds three key advantages in the local market. Its Supercharger network supports peak charging power of 250 kW. The HW4.0 hardware comes with 12 cameras and an enhanced radar system. On top of that, Tesla’s strong brand appeal still carries weight with Chinese buyers.

The Model Y L has a longer wheelbase than the Model X but comes at a lower price. This reflects a shift in Tesla’s product strategy. As mass production nears, competition in the six-seat electric SUV market will intensify in 2025.

Tesla has not yet released detailed information on range or interior features. However, upgrades at the Shanghai factory show production is in its final stages. The Model Y L is expected to launch in China this fall. When it does, the full technical specs will be revealed. It is likely to impress.
