What is the difference between the Mercedes-Benz E300 and E350?

[PCauto] Although the brand-new W214 generation has become the latest Benz E-Class, for many who pursue elegance and comfort, the W213 generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class is still the top choice in the used car market.
Among the numerous options, buyers often find themselves torn between the E300 and E350. Although they look quite similar, there are significant differences in engine and chassis structure.
Differences in power systems between E300 and E350
During the product cycle of W213, Mercedes-Benz underwent a significant technology upgrade.
Early E300 models were equipped with the M274 2.0 L four-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 245 hp and 370 Nm of torque.
Later, the E300 was upgraded to the M264 engine, with a slight increase in output to 258 hp.
In contrast, the E350 took a leap into the era of EQ Boost, combining the M264 engine with a 48V mild hybrid system to produce a maximum output of 299 hp and a peak torque of 400 Nm. The electric motor further provides an additional 14 hp as assistance.
In terms of driving experience, the E350 offers smoother starts and stop-start processes, a quality improvement that's particularly noticeable on the congested streets of Kuala Lumpur.
However, in the 2026 used car market, this technological advancement has become a concern for some buyers. Once the EQ Boost system's battery and motor are out of warranty, repair costs often become a headache for second-hand owners.
Therefore, many buyers who prioritize long-term ownership costs tend to prefer the purely petrol-powered E300.
The gap between E300 and E350 is more than just horsepower
As one of the luxury models in the local assembly (CKD) lineup at the time, the E350 was almost fully equipped.
The E350 usually comes standard with Air Body Control air suspension, providing a magic carpet-like vibration damping effect, while the E300 is mostly only equipped with Agility Control mechanical suspension.
In addition, the E350 is equipped as standard with the complete Driving Assistance Package, including an adaptive cruise control system (ACC) that reduces fatigue during long-distance driving.
In the used car market, the E350 of the same year is usually RM 15,000 to RM 30,000 more expensive than the E300.
Interestingly, despite the higher new car price and better configuration, the E350's depreciation rate is often faster than that of the E300.
The reason is simple: used car buyers’ real concerns over potential air suspension leaks and 48V system failures heavily influence its resale value.
Why is the E300 more sought after?
In used car showrooms, a reasonably low-mileage E300 often sells within a few days.
Buyers' needs are clear: the E300 already delivers more than enough power for daily driving, while avoiding the high long-term maintenance headaches. It still retains most of Mercedes’ signature luxury features, such as the dual 12.3-inch displays and 64-color ambient lighting.
In contrast, the E350 seems more like a choice for hardcore users pursuing ultimate experiences, with a budget that includes a reserved fund for maintenance.
It is worth noting that there are still some E350e plug-in hybrid versions on the market, with used prices even lower than the E300. However, due to the high replacement cost of aging batteries, we recommend that non-enthusiasts of hybrid systems consider this option carefully.
E300 or E350?
If you are looking for a hassle-free driving experience over the next three to five years, then finding a well-conditioned E300 remains the most rational option. It strikes a perfect balance between performance and maintenance costs.
However, if you cannot resist the premium feel brought by air suspension and have a strong need for driving assistance, the flagship-level enjoyment provided by the E350 is indeed something the E300 cannot offer, provided that you are mentally prepared for the complexities of the 48V system.
