2020 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8G Review

In Malaysia’s C-Segment sedan market, family users and consumers who prioritize balance have always been the main group – they want reliable and durable quality, while hoping to get more features and a comfortable experience within a limited budget. The 2020 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8G, as a popular choice in this segment, hits these demands perfectly: Toyota's consistent reliability, class-leading safety features, and practical family space. The main goal of this test drive is to verify whether its actual performance in daily commuting and family travel scenarios matches its positioning and whether it has enough competitiveness compared to its segment rivals.
From the exterior, the 2020 Corolla Altis 1.8G adopts a younger design language, with overall smooth lines and a touch of sportiness. At the front, the large trapezoidal lower grille is paired with sharp LED headlamps, which are highly recognizable; two muscular lines extend from the A-pillar to the front of the hood, enhancing the sense of power. On the side, the double waistline design keeps the side profile from looking monotonous, while the 17-inch multi-spoke alloy rims (with 225/45 R17 tires) are appropriately sized and well-proportioned to the body. At the rear, C-shaped LED taillights echo the headlamps, and the small spoiler on the trunk lid along with the dual-exhaust layout on either side (though decorative) further enhances the sporty vibe. The lighting system is a highlight, with fully LED headlamps that are not only sufficiently bright but also include automatic headlights and daytime running lights, improving practicality.
Sitting inside, the interior style leans towards simplicity and practicality, with a symmetrical center console layout that's clear and easy to handle. In terms of materials, the top of the center console is covered with soft-touch plastic, which feels decent, and the inner door panels are wrapped in leather, meeting the standards for this price segment. For core features, the 9-inch touch infotainment screen serves as the visual centerpiece, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and the Sound Plus function, with smooth operations. To the left is the air conditioning control area, which retains physical buttons for more convenient blind operation. The instrument panel features a 7-inch TFT-LCD multifunction display that can show information like fuel consumption, speed, and the status of safety systems. Its clarity and information richness are satisfactory. Convenience-wise, the car is equipped with keyless entry/start, 8-way power-adjustable front seats (with lumbar support), dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air-conditioning vents, and more. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, and the center armrest and cup holders are also present, making everyday use very convenient.
In terms of space performance, the vehicle dimensions are 4630mm × 1780mm × 1435mm with a wheelbase of 2700mm, which is at the mainstream level in the C-Segment. The front-row seating space is ample, providing a passenger with a height of 175cm about a fist and two fingers of headroom and sufficient legroom after adjusting the seat. The rear-seat space stands out—passengers of the same height sitting in the back have about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The floor in the middle has a low hump, which means that even with three people in the back, the middle passenger’s comfort won’t be too compromised. Regarding storage capacity, there are storage slots in the front and rear door panels that can hold two water bottles each, and the central armrest box and glove compartment have sufficient volume. While the official trunk capacity hasn’t been disclosed, practical experience shows it can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases. Folding the rear seats allows for loading larger items.
Powertrain: The 2020 Corolla Altis 1.8G is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 139PS/6400rpm and a peak torque of 172N·m/4000rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. During actual driving, the initial acceleration feels relatively smooth, lacking the burst of power from a turbo engine, but once you press the accelerator, the power output is linear, which is perfectly adequate for daily commuting. During mid-to-high-speed acceleration, pressing the accelerator deeply allows the transmission to simulate gear shifts (manual control is also possible via paddle shifters). Although it does not provide a strong push-back sensation, as long as you accelerate in advance, there is sufficient power reserve for overtaking. The driving modes include ECO, Normal, and Sport. In ECO mode, the power output is softer, suitable for congested urban conditions. In Sport mode, the throttle response is slightly more sensitive, making it more suitable for highway driving.
Handling and chassis performance are traditional strengths of the Corolla Altis. The combination of front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone independent suspension is relatively rare in this class. The steering wheel has moderate weight, minimal play, and clear precision, making everyday driving easy. The chassis tuning leans towards comfort without losing resilience. It effectively absorbs most minor vibrations on speed bumps or bumpy urban roads, ensuring comfort for rear passengers. During cornering, the suspension provides good support, keeping body roll within a reasonable range and preventing noticeable swaying. As for braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes offer linear brake force output, and the brake pedal feel is moderate, making it easy to control during daily driving.
During the test drive, we also tested fuel consumption. In congested urban conditions, fuel consumption was around 8.5L/100km, and on highways, it could drop to about 6.5L/100km, with a combined fuel consumption of around 7.5L/100km, which is essentially consistent with the official figure of 7.7L/100km. The fuel economy performance is good. In terms of driving comfort, sound insulation is commendable. Tire and wind noise are not very noticeable in urban driving, and although wind noise slightly increases at high speeds, it does not interfere with conversations inside the car. The seats provide good support and cushioning, ensuring comfort even during long drives. Safety features are a major highlight, with 7 airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring all included, placing it at the top level within its class and giving the driver plenty of confidence.
In conclusion, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Altis 1.8G has very clear core strengths: balanced space performance, comprehensive safety features, a reliable powertrain, and a comfortable chassis setup. Compared to competitors like the Honda Civic 1.8L or Mazda 3 1.5L, it offers more comprehensive safety configurations and a more spacious rear cabin, making it ideal for families. Although its performance is not as aggressive as turbocharged models, it stands out with its smooth and durable power output, as well as good fuel economy.
This car is clearly suited for specific groups: family users who prioritize reliability and safety, or office workers who need a well-rounded commuter vehicle. It has no significant shortcomings and performs relatively well in all aspects, capable of handling daily commutes and family trips. If you're looking for a worry-free, practical, and well-equipped C-segment sedan, the 2020 Corolla Altis 1.8G is a good choice.
