2026 Toyota Harrier launched, price increased to RM289,000, no longer offering pure petrol models

[PCauto] Toyota Harrier has always been positioned in the subtle range between mass-market SUVs and luxury brands (e.g., Lexus).
People who buy it usually don't mind its connection to the RAV4's shared platform but appreciate its understated yet refined sense of sophistication.
Just a few days ago, UMW Toyota officially announced the launch of the 2026 Toyota Harrier 2.5 HEV in the local market.
The most notable change is not the exterior, but the removal of the 2.0L Luxury variant, which was previously an entry-level choice. This means that from now on, if you want to buy a new Harrier locally, your only option is this hybrid version.
Price increased to RM289,000
Let's talk about the money, which is everyone's main concern. The official price of this new car is set at RM289,000 (excluding insurance), which raises the entry-level price by RM15,000 compared to the previous 2.0L Luxury model priced at RM274,000.
So, what exactly do we get with the new Harrier?
2.5L HEV
The previous 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with CVT transmission offered a smooth ride, but during full-load uphill climbs or high-speed overtakes, its "gracefulness" occasionally felt a bit lacking.
This time, the fourth-generation THS (4th Gen Toyota Hybrid System), combined with a 2.5L Dynamic Force engine and electric motor, delivers a total output of 217 PS.

This is not just numerical growth; more importantly, the instantaneous torque response brought by the motor makes the starting and mid-range acceleration of this mid-to-large SUV more effortless.
Regarding this hybrid system (battery, inverter, and control unit), UMW Toyota offers a warranty of up to 8 years, along with a 5-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty.

12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel
In terms of design, this generation of the XU80 Harrier still maintains its restrained design language, officially dubbed "Dignified Elegance."

Apart from the HEV badge at the rear of the vehicle, it’s challenging to distinguish at first glance. However, opening the car door reveals obvious changes.
The 2026 model finally upgrades to a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel, replacing the outdated pointer instrument of previous models. At the same time, it comes standard with a 10.5-inch color HUD head-up display system.

As for the 12-way electrically adjustable driver seat with ventilation and heating functions, the nanoe™ X air purification system, and the iconic dimming panoramic sunroof, they remain core selling points and are all retained.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
In terms of safety, Toyota did not skimp, equipping the model with the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
Compared to the older version, its precision in identifying active safety systems has been significantly improved, and it also adds Road Sign Assist and Parking Support Brake.
These added features further cement the Harrier's position as a premium family SUV.

Why Harrier is now only available in hybrid versions
Here, we must delve into Toyota’s “subtraction” logic for this decision.
Converting Harrier entirely into hybrid models actually aligns with Toyota’s “multi-path” electrification strategy promoted heavily.
In 2026, hybrids are no longer an expensive gimmick but a practical evolution. According to official data, the average fuel consumption of the hybrid version of Harrier is only 4.7L/100km.
For an SUV of this size, that's genuinely impressive.
For those who deal with city traffic daily or need to frequently travel long distances, the hybrid system not only makes the cabin quieter (especially in low-speed EV mode) but also saves a significant amount of fuel money over time.

But the price tag of RM289,000 is a bit steep
Looking at Harrier's competitors, this price range is actually a bit awkward.
With a car budget of 289,000 MYR, you can afford a BMW X1 (starting at 250,800 MYR) or Mercedes-Benz GLA (starting at 258,888 MYR), which are not only cheaper but also come with a clearly stronger brand appeal.
And then there's the Corolla Cross HEV (140,800 MYR), which is much cheaper and doesn't fall too far behind in terms of functionality. So where does that leave the Harrier 2.5 HEV?
The answer, I think, still lies in that same word: "grace." The TNGA-K platform provides excellent chassis tuning, combined with a rear double wishbone suspension, giving the Harrier a more solid shock absorption performance compared to ordinary family cars.
It's not the kind of car that lets you seek thrills in corners; it's the kind of car that quietly and comfortably takes you home after a long day's work—a haven of peace.
