【PCauto】Recently, during a live speech and press conference on the new U.S. fuel economy policy, Donald J. Trump candidly shared his strong impression of several Asian countries.
He noted that in countries like Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, there exists a type of "very small, really cute" car, reminiscent of the classic Volkswagen Beetle.
Trump also explicitly stated that such models are currently not permitted for production in the United States, but he has directed the U.S. Department of Transportation to immediately expedite the approval process to facilitate domestic production of similar "tiny cars," with gasoline, hybrid, and electric versions under consideration.
In Trump's view, these Asian small cars possess the core advantages of affordability and practicality, offering consumers a new car-buying option that complements traditional large SUVs and pickup trucks in the U.S. They are particularly suitable for urban commutes while aligning with principles of fuel efficiency and economy.
Although Trump's speech did not directly mention any specific model or refer to Malaysia's car brand Perodua, discussions in Malaysian public opinion and social forums have consistently centered on the Myvi, making it the "biggest winner" in this international automotive discussion.

The Myvi has long held the leading position in Malaysia's car sales and is the most common compact car on the streets. Its 1.3L and 1.5L engine options balance power and fuel efficiency. The new models come standard with automatic transmissions, with some variants equipped with the Perodua SmartDrive Assist safety system, achieving a balance of practicality and safety. Its 22.2km/L fuel efficiency further aligns with energy-saving needs.

Moreover, for most Malaysians, the Myvi has long transcended its role as mere transportation, becoming an integral part of daily family life and public livelihood. It symbolizes a car culture that is "small, economical, and city-friendly."
However, amidst the excitement, the small car craze sparked by Trump's statement also brings to light several practical challenges.

The first challenge is regulatory adaptation. In terms of size, safety standards, and crash testing, Asian mini cars differ from those under stringent U.S. safety testing systems such as IIHS and NHTSA. To achieve local production, regulatory adjustments and certification processes would require significant time.
The second challenge is market acceptance. American consumers have long been accustomed to large SUVs and pickup trucks, and small cars still need to overcome consumers' ingrained habits regarding crash safety perceptions and long-distance driving adaptability.
