More and more Malaysian consumers are leaning towards buying SUVs, the sedan market share is declining

【PCauto】In Malaysian domestic automotive market, consumer preferences are undergoing a notable transformation as SUVs continue to capture the public’s favor. Data from last year’s auto sales show that while the best-selling Porton Saga and Perodua Bezza have held their top positions, their sales figures have experienced significant fluctuations.

Conversely, SUVs have emerged as the pivotal models driving growth for automakers. In 2024, Honda CR-V became the best-seller in the domestic C-segment, achieving sales of 11,300 units and capturing a 36% market share in that category.

In October 2024, China’s Jaecoo J7 secured the title of best-selling non-local SUV with 1,579 registrations that month, closely trailed by Honda HR-V at 1,550 units and Toyota Corolla Cross at 1,140 units.

After debuting in July 2024, Jaecoo J7 quickly made its mark in the market. Its success not only underscores the model's inherent strengths but also signals the growing acceptance of SUVs among domestic consumers.

In the electric vehicle arena, Proton chose to launch its first EV in the form of an SUV. This strategic move has resonated with the market, as e.MAS 7—a C-segment pure electric SUV—has already secured over 4,000 orders.

Overall, the surge in consumer preference for SUVs can be attributed to several factors. With rising living standards, consumers now demand more space and practicality in their vehicles. SUVs typically offer a more spacious interior than sedans, adeptly accommodating the needs of daily commutes, shopping trips, family outings, and even long-distance travels by offering ample room for both passengers and cargo. Moreover, their imposing design not only exudes strength and style but also meets the growing desire for individuality and uniqueness.

On the technological front, modern SUVs have made significant strides in handling and fuel efficiency. Advanced suspension systems and four-wheel-drive technologies ensure exceptional performance across varied terrains—be it urban streets or challenging rural and mountainous routes. Additionally, the incorporation of hybrid and new energy technologies enables these SUVs to deliver robust performance while reducing fuel consumption and emissions, in line with current environmental and energy-saving priorities.

For automakers, the rising popularity of SUVs in the domestic market provides clear strategic direction. Investment in the SUV segment—from entry-level subcompact models to luxurious mid-to-large options—is on the rise. As market competition intensifies, it is expected that even more high-quality and cost-effective SUV models will emerge in the domestic market.
