Proton will implement major technological reforms and launch the AMA platform to improve vehicle safety

【PCauto】At the 2025 Proton Tech Showcase, the brand unveiled a groundbreaking technological innovation: the all-new Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA). This platform not only targets a five-star safety rating under the ASEAN NCAP 2026-2030 protocol but also includes Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Additionally, it complies with Euro NCAP standards, laying a solid technical foundation for the brand’s global expansion.

Enhanced Safety Performance and a Break from Legacy Platform Limitations

Previously, the Proton New Saga model received only a four-star safety rating under the ASEAN NCAP 2021-2025 protocol, which sparked market debate.

The root cause, however, was not Proton's lack of safety research and development capability, but rather limitations imposed by the vehicle’s fundamental architecture.

This economy sedan adopted the structural framework of the 2005 Savvy model. Even after reinforcing the structure with high-pressure forming (HPF) steel components, surpassing the safety limitations of the old architecture remained a challenge.

Furthermore, the tested model was a base standard version, lacking the side airbags and curtain airbags available in higher configurations, which directly impacted its side collision score.

In sharp contrast is the safety potential of the AMA platform

Built on a flexible modular concept, the platform increases body torsional rigidity by 25%. It not only optimizes vehicle handling and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance but is also specifically designed to comply with the ASEAN NCAP 2026-2030 safety protocol.

Future SUV, MPV, and other models built on the AMA platform will completely overcome the constraints of legacy architectures, targeting a five-star safety rating and achieving a generational leap in safety performance.

In addition, the AMA platform is structurally designed according to Euro NCAP standards, targeting four to five-star safety ratings globally and paving the way for entering stricter overseas markets.

Supporting Level 2 ADAS and Aligning with New Safety Evaluation Trends

In the field of intelligent driving assistance, the AMA platform has also achieved significant upgrades. Compared to the basic driving assistance configurations of the Saga models, the AMA platform adds a front radar sensor, establishing a "1 camera + 3 radars" perception system that supports 14 core ADAS functions, fully covering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

Its functional matrix includes not only basic advanced assistance functions such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance, but also practical safety features such as blind-spot collision prevention, rear cross-traffic braking, and forward departure alerts.

This upgrade is well-timed, as ASEAN NCAP will begin incorporating lane-keeping assistance capabilities into its safety rating system starting in 2026. The technological readiness of the AMA platform equips Proton's future models to confidently meet the new evaluation standards, while also matching the level of driver assistance configurations in the Geely technology-sharing models under the brand, enhancing the product's market competitiveness.

Empowered by Modular Architecture, Global Blueprint Emerging

The core advantage of the AMA platform lies in its flexible modular design. This architecture supports a maximum wheelbase adjustment range of 290mm, a maximum track adaptability space of 43mm, while achieving 70%-80% parts commonality. It can accommodate traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) as well as series-parallel hybrid (HEV) systems, enabling the rapid derivation of multiple vehicle types such as SUVs and MPVs, significantly shortening product development cycles and iteration timelines.

At the global strategy level, the AMA platform is defined as an "export-ready" architecture, with synchronized development of both right-hand drive and left-hand drive versions, aiming to cover more than 50 markets worldwide.

Proton will prioritize deep cultivation in ASEAN, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America markets. Meanwhile, compliance with Euro 6 emission standards and adaptation to Euro NCAP safety standards offer another potential export pathway: Geely Group may rebrand certain AMA platform models to penetrate the A-segment car markets in Europe, Australia, and others.

This move is strategic: Geely has ceased selling low-cost fuel models such as the Vision X3, and compact SUVs based on the AMA platform are poised to fill the resulting gap in its entry-level fuel car market, achieving economies of scale at the group level.

From technological transformation to a shift in global mindset, the AMA platform is not only Proton's core weapon for enhancing product competitiveness but also a key to achieving its goal of doubling sales by 2030.

Through the successive launch of models based on the AMA platform, Proton is decisively transitioning from a local player into a globally competitive automotive brand.
