Tesla recalls globally due to the trunk lid issue, 1.68 million vehicles in China affected

On August 7, we learned from the official website of the State Administration for Market Regulation of China that Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. have filed a recall plan with the State Administration for Market Regulation of China in accordance with the requirements of the "Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products" and the "Implementation Measures for the Recall of Defective Automobile Products" regulations.  Effective immediately, they are recalling certain imported Model S, Model X and domestically produced Model 3, Model Y electric vehicles manufactured between October 15, 2020 and July 17, 2024, totaling 1,683,627 units. This is Tesla's biggest recall in the Chinese market so far.

The reason for this recall is that some vehicles may not be able to detect that the front trunk cover is unlocked after it is unlocked. The vehicle cannot give the "front trunk is not closed" warning. And under extreme circumstances, it can lead to the front trunk cover being flipped open while the vehicle is driving, affecting the driver's view, increasing the risk of collision and posing a safety hazard.

This reason is the same as Tesla's recall of more than 1.8 million vehicles in the United States last month, which is also because the software cannot give the "front trunk is not closed" warning and may cause the front trunk to suddenly open while driving, obstructing the driver's view and increasing the risk of collision.

The recall will be conducted through Vehicle Remote Upgrade (OTA) technology, which will provide free software updates for vehicles covered by the recall. The upgraded vehicle can recognize the failure status of the front spare box latch and issue a "front spare box is not locked" text and buzzer notification. At the same time, vehicles detected with a fault in the front trunk latch will be repaired for free to eliminate safety hazards. For vehicles that cannot be upgraded through OTA technology, the Tesla service center will contact the relevant users to implement the recall.
