[PCauto] While Tesla grapples with declining sales in the European market, it has achieved impressive growth in Japan. According to relevant data, Tesla's sales in Japan for the first quarter of 2025 increased by 56% compared to the previous year, reaching 2,120 units.

This surge stands out prominently among major global markets, especially within the context of challenged sales in Europe and North America. Tesla's sales in the European market have declined by approximately 30%, while its own sales in the U.S. are down by 10% year-over-year.

In February 2025, while Tesla did not disclose specific sales figures for Japan, the Japan Automobile Importers Association reported that sales for “other brands” (of which Tesla represents the majority) totaled 549 units. Meanwhile, BYD sold 221 units in Japan.
By March, sales of “other brands” skyrocketed by 89% to 1,249 units, setting a new monthly record. However, there was no notable jump in BYD's monthly sales figures, indicating that Tesla's monthly sales in Japan have surpassed those of BYD.

BYD has introduced four electric vehicle models in Japan: the Seal, Dolphin, Atto 3, and Sealion 07. In 2024, BYD sold a total of 2,223 electric vehicles in Japan, marking a 54% year-on-year increase. Of these, the Dolphin achieved cumulative sales of 1,237 units, surpassing Hyundai from January to October; the Atto 3 sold relatively well in some stores; and the Seal, launched in June 2024, garnered over 300 orders within roughly one month of its release.

In comparison, local Japanese automakers have only introduced eight electric vehicle models. Nissan's Leaf saw a significant decrease of 32% in sales during the first quarter, selling just 1,133 units, while Toyota's bZ4X sold only 85 units, reflecting a staggering year-on-year decline of 76%. The limited domestic competition has allowed Tesla to more easily capture market share in Japan.
The best-selling electric vehicle brand in Japan is Nissan, with its Sakura model selling 1,760 units and capturing approximately 40% of the market share.

Tesla's success in Japan can be attributed to multiple factors. From a brand influence perspective, Tesla has established a strong image focusing on technology and sustainability through years of continuous innovation in electric vehicle technology worldwide.
In terms of technical advantages, Tesla's efficient lithium battery technology and advanced autonomous driving capabilities have created strong appeal in the Japanese market. Despite the presence of numerous competitive local automakers, Tesla's specific technological edge in electric vehicles is quite evident. Furthermore, its Supercharger network, which provides a solid charging experience, has enhanced brand loyalty among users.

With the increasing acceptance of electric vehicles in Japan and improvements in charging infrastructure, Tesla is poised for even greater expansion in the Japanese market in the future.
