Volvo EX60: Electric Successor to the XC60 Completes Mid-Size EV Lineup

Key competitive strengths include the SPA3 platform, ultra-fast charging, and an off-road variant

[PCauto] Volvo has unveiled the EX60, an all-electric SUV that directly succeeds the combustion-powered XC60. Built on the dedicated SPA3 electric architecture, the EX60 is a cornerstone of Volvo's electrification strategy, with production slated to begin in spring 2026.

This launch comes as Volvo seeks to reinvigorate its EV sales, which saw a 13% decline in 2025. The EX60 addresses this by targeting a gap in the mid-size premium EV segment with key technologies such as mega-casting and native ultra-fast charging. These features aim to boost competitiveness in the EV sector, while its design highlights further strengthen its appeal.

The EX60 adopts Volvo's latest design language, sharing a strong familial resemblance with the larger EX90. A minimalist ethos guides both form and function.

  • The front fascia features a closed grille paired with split "Thor's Hammer" headlights;
  • The side of the car eliminates traditional door handles, using flush-mounted door handles integrated into the waistline, with electric release, combined with a low-lying front end, fastback roofline, and narrowed side panels, achieving a low drag coefficient of 0.26.

Additionally, to appeal to a broader audience, the car is simultaneously launching a Cross Country off-road version, a key point of differentiation emphasized by the official announcement.

  • The Cross Country variant features a 20mm-higher ground clearance than the standard model, extendable by a further 20mm with optional air suspension;
  • It includes stainless steel underbody guards, wider wheel arches, and exclusive 21-inch wheels;
  • It also offers exclusive exterior colour options;
  • The rear design departs from the existing family design language, abandoning the C-shaped taillights of the EX30 and EX90 for vertically segmented taillights;
  • Paired with black trim kits, giving it a sportier look.

This minimalism continues inside, where a button-free layout integrates most controls into a large central touchscreen, complemented by a fully digital instrument cluster for an intuitive user interface.

The EX60 is also Volvo’s first model featuring the Google Gemini AI voice assistant, enabling natural language interaction to meet needs without fixed commands and providing personalized suggestions based on user habits.

Moreover, the comfort features and space utilization have been optimized. The vehicle is equipped with a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, including four speakers embedded in the front headrests for an immersive listening experience.

Additionally, leveraging the advantages of the SPA3 platform's all-electric structure, the vehicle achieves a flat floor and a front trunk design. The cup holders are hidden beneath the central armrest, making storage layout more practical.

The company has specified that all models feature a five-seater layout, with no third-row option available. Curb weight ranges from approximately 2,116 kg to 2,330 kg (4,663–5,137 lbs), with the Cross Country variant starting from around 2,296 kg (5,060 lbs).

As for the aspects users care most about—power and energy replenishment—the official release has divided the power matrix into two demand lines: family use and performance, offering three versions: P6, P10, and P12.

  • The entry-level P6 version is equipped with a single rear-drive motor, delivering a maximum power of 369 horsepower, peak torque of 354 lb-ft, 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds, an 80kWh battery pack, EPA range of approximately 499 kilometers with 20-inch wheels, and a maximum charging power of 350 kW.
  • The mid-range P10 version features dual-motor all-wheel drive, with a combined power of 503 horsepower, peak torque of 524 lb-ft, 0-100 km/h acceleration reduced to 4.4 seconds, a 91kWh battery, and an estimated EPA range of approximately 515 kilometers with the smallest wheel configuration.
  • The top-end P12 version also offers dual-motor all-wheel drive, with a combined power soaring to 670 horsepower, 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.8 seconds, a 112kWh battery, and an EPA range of about 644 kilometers with 20-inch wheels.

Charging capability is a central pillar of the EX60's competitiveness. According to official data, the high-end model supports 400 kW DC fast charging, taking only 19 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. A 10-minute charge can add about 278 kilometers of range, which approaches the convenience of refuelling a petrol car.

In summary, as the electric successor to the globally successful XC60 (over 2.6 million units sold), the EX60 is pivotal in extending Volvo's EV portfolio—from the EX90 and EX30—into the mainstream mid-size SUV segment, completing a crucial gap in the lineup.

The simultaneous launch of the Cross Country off-road version continues Volvo's outdoor characteristics, broadening the usage scenarios for electric vehicles. Meanwhile, its intelligent features, developed in collaboration with Google and NVIDIA, create a unique advantage exclusive to the EX60.

Perodua Traz VS Ativa, which one is more worth buying?

Traz, as a newly launched mid-sized SUV, offers more spacious room and mainstream power compared to small SUVs, but its pricing appears slightly higher than that of Ativa. Ativa, on the other hand, is Perodua's long-time best-selling small SUV with more affordable pricing and a balanced combination of power and tech features.

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?

Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.

Will the Toyota Yaris Cross come to Malaysia? If it comes, how much will it sell for?

The launch of Perodua Traz indicates that the market size of small SUVs in Malaysia has been expanding in recent years. However, the question naturally shifts back to Toyota. As a brand with the most comprehensive product line and a strong foundation in both the SUV and hybrid sectors, will Toyota choose the Yaris Cross to participate in this small SUV competition?

Why is the Toyota Sienna so popular with so many people?

In Malaysia, most family MPVs choose Toyota Alphard, Vellfire, or Kia Carnival. These models each have their advantages in luxury, space, or brand influence, but models that truly balance large space, multifunctional practicality, fuel efficiency, and reliability are rarely seen.
