Volvo's first pure electric vehicle using 800V technology, the fastest and furthest electric vehicle in Volvo's history

[PCauto] ES90 is Volvo’s inaugural model to embrace 800V technology, and compared with conventional 400V systems, the advantages are striking. By delivering more power at the same current, it dramatically accelerates charging speeds. At a 350kW fast-charging station, the ES90 can add 300 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes. Additionally, the system generates less heat, ensuring the battery remains secure and stable during rapid charging without risking an electrical overload from overheating.

To complement the 800V setup, Volvo has thoroughly advanced both its battery management software and hardware. The brand-new battery management system now incorporates advanced adaptive charging technology, a breakthrough stemming from Volvo’s investment in Breathe Battery Technologies. Thanks to this innovation, charging ES90 from 10% to 80% has been slashed by 30%, taking just 20 minutes. Such swift charging performance positions it ahead of its rivals, making recharging as convenient and efficient as refueling.

In terms of range, under the WLTP standard, ES90 can achieve up to 700 kilometers. Under the CLTC cycle, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive version equipped with a 106kWh battery can attain an impressive range of 740 kilometers.

Beyond its formidable charging and range capabilities, ES90 remains true to Volvo’s brand ethos by extensively incorporating recycled and natural materials in its interior. Specifically, 29% of the aluminum, 18% of the steel, and an additional 16% of recycled polymers and bio-based materials are used. The inclusion of FSC-certified lumber for the interior trim not only underscores its eco-friendly credentials, but also creates a warm, natural ambiance within the cabin.

In addition, ES90 boasts a Battery Passport powered by blockchain technology, enabling consumers to clearly trace the origins of essential raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite, as well as monitor the overall CO₂ emissions footprint of the battery pack, which highlights Volvo’s steadfast commitment to sustainability and instills greater confidence in environmentally conscious customers.

In terms of performance, the benefits of the 800V system extend far beyond mere charging and range. By incorporating lighter motors and other components, the overall weight of ES90 has been reduced, elevates the vehicle’s energy efficiency and significantly enhances its acceleration. In everyday driving conditions, consumers will experience smooth yet potent power delivery. Whether accelerating from a standstill in urban traffic or overtaking on the highway, ES90 is engineered to handle it with ease.

With the launch of ES90, Volvo’s competitive edge in the Southeast Asian electric vehicle market is poised to grow further. It provides consumers with a high-performance, long-range electric vehicle and exemplifies Volvo’s commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge technological innovation.
