What are the issues with the Toyota Veloz? Understand them clearly before purchasing

[PCauto] Since Toyota Veloz replaced Avanza as Toyota's mainstay in the small MPV market, this model based on the DNGA platform has been drawing considerable attention.

Although it wears a Toyota badge, it has Daihatsu genes at its core. This has helped it achieve strong sales volumes, yet also exposed it to increasingly critical scrutiny from owners.

When mentioning Veloz, it's impossible to avoid its DNGA platform

Although platform sharing is an industrial norm, the recall incident in early 2024 did cast a shadow over many potential buyers.

The most critical issue focused on the Front Shock Absorber Nut. Due to insufficient tightening torque at the factory end, many owners reported unsettling noises from the front suspension when driving on uneven roads shortly after taking delivery of their vehicles.

If the manufacturer had not promptly issued a recall notice and performed secondary reinforcements, long-term driving could have directly impacted driving stability.

Additionally, even though it was an extremely rare production defect, discussions about improper welding of the Side Impact Beam (front door anti-collision beam) were repeatedly amplified on social media. Topics involving passive safety tend to affect consumers' nerves far more than any missing configurations.

Although Toyota is generally seen as a synonym for reliability, the structural assembly issues revealed in Veloz's early days have somewhat eroded trust in the model.

The noise inside the Veloz is too loud

When used for urban commuting, this powertrain performs smoothly and efficiently, but once it enters high-speed cruising (especially above 110 km/h) or requires rapid acceleration for overtaking, the noticeable transmission noise penetrates the cabin through the firewall.

Although there are currently no large-scale reports of transmission failures and even sporadic feedback about anomalies after traveling over 10,000 kilometers is mostly regarded as isolated cases, this noise does indeed reduce the sense of refinement while driving.

This is compounded by its poor sound insulation.

Road noise from the chassis and wind noise around the A-pillar become overly prominent in the Veloz once speed exceeds 90 km/h. Many owners have complained on social media that cost-saving and lightweight measures on the DNGA platform have led to stingy interior materials.

The extensive use of hard plastic parts not only results in an ordinary tactile feel but also creates an annoying issue. On bumpy roads, the squeak and rattle sounds coming from the dashboard and door panels give owners a headache.

Too few technological features

Apart from the major mechanical attributes, car owners are also dissatisfied with some of the smart configurations of the Veloz.

The most criticized feature is the Wireless Charger. Many owners report that its charging efficiency is extremely low; the phone heats up faster than it charges. Under intensive power usage like navigation, this feature feels more like a gimmick than practical.

In addition, the 360 panoramic imaging system has also been labeled as "outdated."

While it performs reasonably well in well-lit daytime conditions, in underground parking lots or on rainy nights, the noise and blurriness on the screen make reversing an eye-test challenge.

Another aspect worth paying attention to is the braking system.

There have been recalls involving the Brake Caliper Slide Pin Boot, a small rubber component. Although seemingly insignificant, its failure can lead to water ingress and corrosion, resulting in brake noise or even abnormal wear.

Can the 2026 Veloz HEV bring improvements?

Despite the aforementioned issues, Veloz remains a popular model in the market. This is largely attributed to Toyota's robust after-sales network and the vehicle's excellent resale value.

However, with the increasingly competitive wave of Southeast Asian new energy vehicles, all eyes are on the rumored 2026 Veloz HEV (hybrid version).

Currently, spy shots and specifications of the hybrid Veloz are the subject of heated discussions.

For those focusing on the Veloz, the critical points lie not only in the more fuel-efficient hybrid system but also in the hope that Toyota can address the common issues of the older model in this mid-cycle refresh or generational update.

For instance, will the added battery weight enhance the suspension structure? Will the inclusion of an electric motor eliminate transmission noise? Will there be higher-quality 360-degree camera imaging?
