A brand new Honda Prelude is expected to arrive in Malaysia by 2026, featuring the same hybrid system as the Civic.

A 25th anniversary celebration video released by Honda Malaysia on its social media concludes with a glimpse of a two-door sports car bearing a striking resemblance to the all-new Prelude.

Considering that this car was previously showcased at the 2024 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS 2024), many netizens speculate that this iconic two-door sports car might officially enter the Malaysian market as early as 2026.

The Prelude Returns, Featuring the Civic's Hybrid System

This generation of the Prelude holds significant meaning for both the brand and its users: it's been approximately 24 years since the last Prelude exited the market. The new model is positioned as a two-door coupe, reviving the "Prelude" nameplate.

However, it charts a different course from traditional high-performance, fuel-powered sports cars. Its powertrain utilizes the e:HEV hybrid system shared with the current non-performance Honda Civic. This system combines a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine (141 hp / 182 Nm) with a front-mounted electric motor (184 hp / 315 Nm), channeling power to the front wheels through an e-CVT transmission.

The official 0–100 km/h acceleration time of the Prelude has not been announced yet. However, using the Civic e:HEV's 7.9-second time as a reference, and considering the Prelude's slightly higher weight (approximately 1,460 kg), its real-world performance is anticipated to be in a similar range, accounting for its mass.

Type R Heritage and the S+ Shift Simulator

Despite its hybrid powertrain, the all-new Prelude has received meticulous chassis tuning to bolster its coupe-like handling dynamics.

Its chassis incorporates performance elements derived from the Civic Type R, featuring dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers, a dedicated sport-tuned steering system, and high-performance Brembo brakes, providing drivers with more precise road feedback and stronger braking performance.

To elevate the driving engagement, the Prelude features an S+ Shift system. Engagement via a dedicated console button simulates the shift feel of a traditional 8-speed transmission. This is enhanced by artificially synthesized engine sounds (Active Sound Control, ASC) to strengthen the connection between driver and car.

Interior Configuration and Pricing Reference

The interior follows the Civic family's design language but cultivates a more upscale ambiance. It adopts a dual-tone style, equipped with a 10.25-inch full digital instrument panel and a 9.0-inch central control touch screen, complemented by dual front bucket seats and a button-style gear shift design, creating the texture and sporty atmosphere that a Coupe should have.

In the Japanese market, the official price of this Prelude is approximately JPY 6.179 million. Given that its price in Japan already surpasses that of the local Civic Type R, a Malaysian price tag exceeding RM 400,000 is a distinct possibility, should the model be launched locally.

Practical Coupe or Nostalgic Revival?

For aficionados of two-door sports cars and classic nameplates, the return of the Prelude is undoubtedly compelling, offering elegant coupe design and anticipated driving pleasure. However, its premium pricing, hybrid powertrain, and non-extreme performance orientation may give pause to traditional sports car purists.
